the Straw Boys, an old tradition which has survived in modern Irish life - at least in the western counties of Ireland where they almost certainly originated. They’re most often described as an exceptionally odd bunch of party crashers - young men who appear suddenly at a wedding, possibly uninvited, and dance with the bride and groom before departing as swiftly as they arrived. The only thing that’s consistent in all the stories about them is the way they conceal their identities behind stylized hats made of straw.

Those same masks made an appearance in the movie Midsommar.

    Hysterical .. Comedy gold..
Traditional Irish music is enjoying a revival..
Demonstrated by a band of people playing 'Scotland the Brave' on great highland pipes Then a group of people with baskets on their heads dancing for a man in drag pretending to smoke a pipe ..
My favourite line was about how the small amount of cultivatable land was '" 'centred' maily on the coast.. or in the many sheltered valley"

As someone from there, yes this is all traditional and very real. Just because it doesn’t fit traditional Irish stereotypes doesn’t make it fake, Achill has a unique culture

@@ellanicheallaigh908 thanks... but the first tune is an O’Carolan tune.. he was from County Meath..
followed by the great Highland pipes which with that costume and ‘that’ tune are as iconically Scottish as it’s possible to be.. The dances are both accompanied by the accordion.. invented in Germany and used in folk, classical, jazz and pop everywhere except Antartica.. the first tune I can’t remember the name of the second is known either as the Armagh Polka or Sean Ryans after a Tipperary born fiddler.. both are among the most generic polkas on the pan celtic scene. The basket hats are fun but I’ve seen similar things from English Morris to Papua New Guinea tribal rituals and that woman smoking the pipe is a bloke for a Monty Python sketch.. the whole things is awkwardly badly staged and as ‘traditional’ as leprechauns in green velvet hats.. and the rest is a holiday comercial.. Achill may well have a unique culture but it was very well hidden from these particular foreign film makers..

The straw men. Representatives of the legal fiction doing a spirit raising pagan dance. I rebuke all associated in Jesus name.
