What a lovely young man, NO, not you Richard. Way back in the nineties, we ran packet radio stations on CB channels. Unlike Jacob's system, there was no encryption, any other packet radio station in range could join in.
It is such a relief to know that there is a solid core of younger people out there doing great work to help keep us free. I am looking forward to following the progress of this. Fantastic interview, thank you

You're correct, projects such as meshtastic have been around for some time. The difference with the openCom XL is that it's the first device to incorporate two radio modems to my knowledge. The second modem is higher speed and I've tested it up to 70kbps.
That looks like a good idea for setting up ones own private local network. Having multiple of those units connected around a specific area should expand its reach. However, with any device, even without the Sim card, the device itself has its own Identifier ID.
Mobile phones do have an IMEI yes, but with the SIM card removed and the radios switched off on your phone will not be identifiable. Of course, that removes much of the utility of a phone, though!
Great video. Well done Jacob. What frequency does this operate on, and what bit rate does it use? Does the frequency need a licence? Oh, and what's it transmitter power? Thanks. BTW I think your mindset is spot on about less screen time is so much more life time. Good on you Jacob. Keep up the good work my friend. Seeing you on here and hearing what you have to say gives me real hope for our future.
So interesting. Sounds like Jacob and the project are seriously concerned re issues involving data protection and privacy... loved his values and commitment in this respect and can only think they will be successful in their endeavours to produce affordable alternatives with built-in safeguards. Needs marketing... Dragons Den?
I hope we can get this & other devices like this to cover 100s of miles & not just peer to peer to one contact when someone does it will sell like hot cakes
What we need is organised groups of people in counties in the UK to set up their networks using this technology, and recruit others to join. Reticulum can daisy-chain between many devices to allow for greater range. e.g. You use your openCom XL to connect to your mate, who has an ethernet cable running to his neighbor. This allows you to communicate with his neighbor as if you had a direct connection to him. I hope that makes sense :)

Sometimes the traditional methods are still the best. My friends and I use Semaphore, which I must admit has its drawbacks because we all live at sea level so it’s impossible to get a clear line of sight between sender and receiver unless we both climb up onto the roof of our respective houses.
It should work as long as the radios are switched off in the mobile too, perhaps I should have mentioned that. You can even wrap it in tin foil if you feel it's necessary!
You can have the communication app become an automated bot messenger where your messages are sent and received with an internal flag where the receiver bins the bot messages and allows legitimate messages though. This makes timestamp and message types messages hidden in the noise.
