my father and i were both homeless at one point. my dad and his current wife unfortunately passed away on the streets. i was on the streets because of my mental health issues...aka suicidal thoughts, self harm, blaming others instead on looking at my own fault and i eventually got myself together and worked my butt off to get where i am now. my father and his wife were out there because of their alcohol and drug addiction and they had no want to change. the issue we all have to understand is that they have to help themselves and have the strive to get out of their situation. my father was given assistance by many agencies and would almost immediately go back to using. we also have to identify the core issues to why they are using or having these issues. me personally i grew up being mentally and physically abused by my dad, being told i cant ever succeed because i am autistic... all those negative thoughts carried on through high school and into my adult life. it took me till i was 22 to really grasp how much i am worth to not only me, but the rest of the world. we all have some sort of story to share to help someone else but until we work on ourselves we cant help other. same thing goes for the homeless, they have to get themselves out. we cant just give handouts to them and expect them to grow.

I have given multiple homeless people a job. Homeless people that say they just need some work. They will show up till payday and you will never see them again. Or, they have no documentation and no way to obtain one. Imagine how hard it would be to get any form of I.d. if you lost your drivers license, SS card, and birth certificate . No imagine if you lost all that and had no home.

Homelessness has nothing to do with a home.

Durham has a TAX PAID program welcoming refugees. Give shelter to your own first!!

I know that people who are homeless, have full time jobs. The problem is that the employers don't want to pay. Having to wait 3 weeks in a shelter, why not put them hotels and NOT FORGET that they are there. Have them look for "affordable housing" when ads state must make 2-3xs their income. People are living in their cars. Why? Some of them can't work and either SSI is not paying because they were denied. Waiting for their appeals. Why 3 weeks for shelter. Have tiny homes come in and build actual homes for these people. Have builders that are building multi million dollar homes, build a home for the homeless.

You gonna have to create homes for them somewhere far away from the city and give them access to help them get back on their feet and clean. I tried helping the homeless when I had my business and they’re good for a day or two but then all the problems start. Stealing, vandalism, scheming. Etc not worth it. The government has to step in and help them. No one on earth has the resources to handle that.

The homeless need tough love ...period. Its time to protect the law abiding productive people. Build facilities away from families and kids and try to get these people back on their feet....but don't make society as a whole suffer.

You want to drink, do drugs not work. (if you wanted to work you wouldn't drink or do drugs)Then you want help to fix a problem YOU made for yourself.

Everyone who doesn’t want to work should go to Portland. If you want to be supported entirely by other people who do work, you should go to Portland. If you want to live in a place where your drug use will be accepted, even supported, you should go to Portland. If you want to work hard to support your family, and live in a clean and safe environment, where your kids can walk to school safely, don’t move to Portland.
