I was able to use some amazing piano covers in this video, links are posted in the description! What are your favorite dreamlike romances? Let me know below!
Like Stories of Old The romance in the curious case of benjamin button had this effect on me only it is stretched to encompass the entirety of the two character’s lives. I get teary eyed just thinking about it.
Thanks for this video. It cuts deep and hurts so good.
The Great Gatsby
Thanks Tom another great video ...my three memorable dreamlike romances are "The Bridges of Madison County" ... "Somewhere in Time" .. and the new one "The Shape of Water"
Like Stories of Old Love Jones is my favorite! It also shows that the Dream World can be in your own city, just explored from a different point of view!
In The Mood For Love, Lost In Translation...Before trilogy and Call Me By Your Name is SO amazing!
These films reinforce the trust in love or the possibility of finding it, at least once. But then the reality you face every day, of hatred, cynicism, sadism, lack of empathy - drives you to disbelieve in any magic at all. And then again, once in a while, a book or a film help rebuild that hope. And you again pick yourself up, piece by piece, to look for that light at the end of the tunnel.
Call me by your name literally changed my opinion about romantic films, it’s just so beautiful. I haven’t watched Before Sunrise but I surely will after this video.
you absolutely have to. Both of the movies are my all time favourites ❤️
You must watch all three films!
My two all time favorite romantic films - CMBYN and the second film in the 'Before' trilogy - 'Before Sunset' set in Paris. The last 5 - 10 minutes of Before Sunset is no doubt one of the best movie endings of all time! Please do yourself a favour and watch this trilogy. Of course, CMBYN is equally as stunning (the book even better!) and I can't wait for the sequel film to come out in a few year's time! The soundtrack to both CMBYN and Before Sunset are also among my favorites 👍😀
The before trilogy is amazing!! you have to watch all 3 and I don't think there's ever going to be a movie that delivers such beautiful conversations between people falling in love and all 3 movies does it differently with time.
Watching The Bees yes!! Please do. I saw Before Sunrise before CMBYN. They both stands solidly on their own.
The Before trilogy and CMBYN mean the world to me, I just can't believe this video is real. What a wonderful and precise analysis. And ending it with the "They had found the stars" quote is just... genius. It's excellent, I am so glad I discovered your channel.
This is exactly what I felt when I found this channel long back.. I am glad someone shares that emotion. I am glad you found this channel.
I feel the same way about both films, and now I know why!
We had stars you and I - Voyager now most famous quote which is told to Charles Boyer by Bette Davis. It's found in CMBYN book .
they have literally found the Stars: Ethan Hawke and Timothée Chalamet ;-)
I watched Before Sunrise at 16, a year before meeting the love of my life; and saw CMBYN at 35, a year after I said goodbye to him. New found perspective with this video. Thank you.
❤️
Noooo I'm so sorry ❤️❤️
I'm sorry.
To have experienced my own sort of "dreamlike" romance with which to relate to these films makes this video all the more sweet 💓
Alexis Ford youre a lucky girl lol
so basically u fucked your way trough summer in some foreign country?
Wait I lowkey highkey really want to know the story
Marcel D Me too
Lucky:)
Someone, somewhere wrote down almost hastily in my unattended notebook left opened, the brief time I went to the till to chat and tip for my coffee and croissant because of not only the service but of the smile I was given when I was having closure in a relationship. I guess they could read my face on that particular day, those lines read as follows ... ''You have loved, they haven't , it hurts when they are gone but your inner satisfaction knowing that you have given your best will stop the bleeding and a silent stream of joy will sing along in your heart from those fleeting memories
The ship is a dreamworld in Titanic, in a way. It's for a limited time and it erases the class barrier between them. (or weakens it, as they still have an antagonist to contend with)
After watching this films I don't know if I want to fall in love or just find closure. At the end I can't find either soooo...yay my life. Great video.
Same
Fall in love, even if it hurts once in a while. The experience of feeling is more important than only wondering what could have been, not having the chance to feel anything at all.
Google made me do it nope. Thats just dreamy tlk. It hurts like hell. It is better to have a sorted head any day.
For me it's the truth, I prefer to feel and be a little bit sad every once in a while than feel nothing every day. Life without feelings is like food that doesn't smell.
Google made me do it, I agree wholeheartedly. And that’s a great analogy. Being a food lover I can totally relate to that. ;)
Why am i crying
I literally just said that omg I'm not the only one
Because people are sentient and that makes us human?
Luinil because you are human and still can feel your heart. :)
This is why I’m crying in the club rn
When I first finished watching CMBYN, one of the first things I thought was that the last time I felt that way watching a movie was when I watched the Before movies. I was literally waiting for this video. Thank you!
I knew someone was going to draw a comparison between these two films. Luca Guadagnino clearly has his influences in check. If he makes a series of Call Me by Your Name films similar to Richard Linklater's Before films, I'd be all in for it.
Call Me By Your Name 2 is reportedly in the works - and it will indeed be similar to the Before Trilogy :)
You might be interested to know that CMBYN is apparently the third part of what Guadagnino calls his Desire Trilogy - the films don't share the same characters and story progression like the Before trilogy, but might be worth checking out!
the author of CMBYN has already signed on to more movies so have the actors and the whole team...
They should make the CMBYN sequel similar to the 'Before' trilogy - where we get a chance to see the characters meet for a brief time at a later stage in life.
MsAnnTaylor The author of the first book André Aciman already wrote and released the sequel called “Find Me”. I think the movie sequel will be based on that book. Luca Guadagnino said that he is developing the script and wants everyone from the first movie back, but because of the coronavirus pandemic they had to put everything to a halt.
i feel like Lost In Translation sort of captured the dreamlike romance in a different way, and there was certainly that "I need to be with you" kinda urgency.
I need to try that movie again
Its one of my favourite
When he said the first love haven't been corrupted by cynicism, that makes me teared up a bit. I haven't had my first love, but when I look around my friends who already passed their first, second, third,... many of them looked back those love with bitterness and regrets, with an uncaring, a wrong person. That fills me so much sadness.
Thank you for using my song in your video. It is very interesting and I'm really glad to be a part of your work. Please let me know if we can do some more collaborations again in the future.
Beautiful song and tenderly played!
Ha!!! I just watched CMBYN today!! I loved it. Felt very sensual and physical and tangible, which I think is very difficult for film to do. Sometimes (mediocre) films can just feel like disjointed images, thereby undermining the atmosphere- or the dreamworlds as you said.
I'm a classics student as well, so the subtle parallel between their homosexual romance and the presence of Greco-Roman statues, implying by extension the presence of homosexuality in the ancient world....you know, the ancient Greeks and Romans didn't even think of sexuality as a preference. It was all about desire. No matter if the desired was masc. or fem.
And I felt like that when I watched it. That it didn't matter they were both male, I was watching two people desire each other like Alexander the Great and Hephaistion (mentioned in "Mystery of Love" on the soundtrack).
So true and I'm glad to see our cultures are trying to let go of these "preferences" once again. All we need is love.
Hahahah omg, you're so full of it believing buzzfeed articles about how ancient Rome and Greece were just these LGBT-paradises. Educate yourself before spewing such nonsense and embarrassing yourself.
The thing you said about "the feeling that the before trilogy gave you but you couldn't find it in other movies until you saw call me by your name" made me realize that i felt in the same way. I can't explain why those emotions are so intense too. I cried again while watching this video for example, it just brings back the feelings.
Thank you for this video. I love it, perfect analysis.
That discussion Elio has with his father close to the end of the movie was one of the most deeply touching and educational moments I have ever had the pleasure of watching in a film. I learned that it's ok to endure that kind of love loss and to use it as a springboard to make yourself more available for love in the future. What a novel idea.
It's wierd how this gives me a better understanding of a romance that just ended. I hope that closure follows after the bittersweet pain. I didn't expect to learn for my own life to this extent from an interpretation of romance movies.
Aaahhh, this was pure sublime. A film becomes an instant classic, when it spawns countless interpretations, analysis, and dissection of its own....by that standpoint, both CMBYN and the Before Sunrise series could be labelled as classics. And your fantastic study of both the films, keeping with their various elements is a masterclass in itself. I wanted to shed some drops of tears by the time your video was over. Thank you so much for such lovely insights to these timeless movie magic:)
Language is way too limited for me to express how much I love and respect these movies. Truly the top. And so is this analysis. As well is impossible for me to watch Call me by your name without crying at the father's monologue, I couldn't hold it with this video. There's something profoundly, deeply true about this quote with the stars. However I never experienced love like the ones we see in the films, I'm afraid it's already too late for that. Sadly in the world, cynisism wins. I'm not sure if it's possible to recover from it. I certainly hope so.
Thank you for your work! It means more than you could probably realise.
I have a hardened heart, yet I tear up when I watch these things.
Perhaps the tears are for my kinder and more hopeful self. I don’t miss the person, as much as who I used to be- a brighter earnest tender and giving being.
I will switch my naïveté for detached discernment. Romance and connection can be everyday without an “other” to share with.
Great vid as always...
Blessed be the mystery of love...
watching any romantic content like this that discusses the beauty in a fictional universe of love personified and in buildings all around us always makes me cry. both such incredible films. they make you long for something and really feel that void.
That makes me not want to watch them. I don't want to feel a void and go around in longing.
7:15
When that piano kicks in (Visions of Gideon)😭😭💔❤ Absolutely amazing. The editing and your writing, well done.
oh my gooddddddd, I can't remeber the last time a UA-cam video made me question my existence and made me cry all at the same time. Good job sir.
Thank you UA-cam for this awesome recommendation. You explain it so beautifully how these two films are special. Keep it up man!
This is one of the most well put together video. How you drew parallel between these two beautiful movies, which the future generations will call "classic romantics", is phenomenal. Thank you for this video!
You have created an impressive video essay of two of my favorite love stories, and put it beautifully into words
these are my two favourite movies of all time, and i know their style isnt for everyone, but i will continue rewatching these films forever because they mean so much to me. until watching this video i didnt realize how much they really have in common. i cant put into words how much i love these two movies. i think mastering characters and emotions and the connection between two characters is such a hard task and its so much easier to write an epic movie plot, but to really get into the minds and hearts of life-like movie characters and have the actors portray it in such a way that seems so real, is just so rare and beautiful.
i watch most youtube videos at 2X speed (just because lol) but this video i watched at normal speed, i wanted to soak in every word, and just like these two movies, i never wanted it to end
When I first saw before sunrise I knew I’d never seen anything like it and I’ve been searching for films similar to the series ever since. Seeing CMBYN this year was almost like a relief because I had finally found a film similar in its style and aims. These films are my favourites and just something else, if anyone knows any films that are also like these PLEASE let me know!
yess we need more of those
9:05 my most favorite pieces of writing.
I can't explain how beautiful this video is... it's all about feelings.
I love both of these movies because they show realistic love in a candid way and how it really ends, unlike the romantic comedy/drama movies with happy endings that most people are used to.
This video is beautiful.
This channel is so so good, love the voice of narrator, the way you explain,,,ohh man, i became mad.....Thank you.
I’m so thankful that you made this video,it’s lovely.
Amazing! Thank you for putting it together. I love before series and call me by your name, and I share the emotions and feelings that those movies bring.
Having now watched all of these videos in chronological order, I just want to say thank you for the channel and for your hard work researching, writing, editing and narrating. I watch a lot of video essays on UA-cam and while many of them are of high quality, few if any have resonated with me, brought me as much joy, or given me as much to ponder as these have in the last week watching them.
this shit broke my heart on how he explained the experiences of perspectives.
Your voice is so calming and beautiful I could listen it for hours! Thank you for your video! This is so beautiful I cry 😢❤
I don't know why I always cry watching your analysis.. You manage to put into words exactly what I was feeling and thinking and I can't thank you enough for that. Please don't stop making them, you are born to do this.
'Before sunrise' is my favorite movie of all time and I recently watched 'Call me by your name' and after finishing both of movie, the real emotion hits in when you're left to process out what you've just watched and you'll realize art is more than a paint on paper.
I absolutely loved call me by your name and the book it is based on is equally beautiful. The movie separates the film from Elio(the main character) more than the book. In the book it is narrated in first person as a man looking back fondly andwith melancholy on a summer while in the movie we are living the summer with him. Which is part of the reason why the film pleases me a bit more. But anyway, I just wanted to share that the quote in the book is”we found the stars you and I. And this is given only once” made me ball my eyes out after I read it.
You put it all in words, man! Both of these movies left me speechless due to their pure representation of love. Brilliant essay!
This is given once only 💕
I loved your video. And everything you say. Intelligent, sensitive, and so very wise. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
you put everything so beautifully in this video, I was sobbing by the end. thank you.
I've watched the Before Trilogy, specifically Before Sunrise, more times than I care to count, but I've never really took the time to consider what makes them so entrancing aside from the wonderful dialogue, views, and characters. Thank you for adding another layer to enjoy to some of my favorite movies and for another great video. You've really got something special going here.
This is an absolutely beautiful video essay - brought tears to my eyes towards the end! A fantastic work of poetry, fully reflective of the two fantastic films you discussed.
this was so thought provoking and beautifully put together. thank you
Your narrative and analysis are outstanding...luv'd it.
Just found your channel and I'm loving it. I have heard a lot about Before Sunrise but I haven't watched it, but now I feel like I really have to. Great job. I have subscribed.
Incredible insight and very well put together. Thank you for creating this.
Your videos are always so well made and you never fail to impress us!
I`m always looking for new videos on your channel, always amazing!
thank you!
Amazing videos like always! Your introspection and talent are fantastic! Keep up the great work!!
Absolutely beautiful analysis, thank you for this
As always a fantastic essay, you always put words to things I can't explain.
this is suuuch a great video. i love how you analyzed all the points!
call me by your name has haunted my perception of love ever since I watched it, the emotions captured in the film speak so loudly to me and I find it so naturalistically pure
I remember that summer dreamlike summer of 1994, the water in the lake so pristine, green trees, biking smell of blueberry brioche sold from vw passat station wagon, saturday disco in the village. His burgundy polo shirt. Omg it was such a long time. But that summer is in my heart etched forever. What was Your summer.
Amazing video, I remember writing down what Eliot father told him on my phone after watching the movie, and to see that you have put a spotlight to it really made feel like part of something
I needed this video so bad. Thank you!
watching this video remains me how I felt the first time I watched this films, and thinking, even if I haven't had a girlfriend in my life(I'm 24 now) thats really not a big deal, this romance, this feeling is something must of the couples cannot have. I know this feeling, this films teach me that, being in love, purity, sexuallity, I know what it feels, do you know what I mean?
Кевином Martell i hope youll find people to connect with like that one day :) doesnt need to be a relationship, but in general those deep connections are so awesome
@@Mienarrr i found it, but he doesnt like me. so sad :D
I cant believe my two favourite romance movies connect in such a powerful way. Thank you for this!
Every time i cry whenever i watch this video, and mostly the last part of this video is so immortal which deserves to live inside my heart forever.
Amazing reflexión (i don't know how to write that word in English) jaja. Call me by your name is one of my favorite movies ever. It made me feel in a way that I didn't know it was possible while experiencing a movie. I just couldn't think about anything else when I was watching it, because i was totally immersed on it.
Hi Yoscelyn, nice comment:). The word you're looking for is "reflection".
Two of my favourite films. Unsure how I have never encountered this video or channel before but I'm subscribing. Great analysis.
THANK YOU for comparing and contrasting these two films, I can never think of one without the other and yet this is the first time I've seen them brought up the same sentence (or in this case, video). Thank you thank you thank you.
"Its already tomorrow in Hong Kong"... loved it
The warmth in this video . Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤
my two favorite movies. literally cried watching this video, so beautiful. thank you.
Such an amazing comparison! I love these two films. I was shocked when you added a clip of Before We Go (which is another favorite movie of mine) because at last now I know what's the feeling that I felt when I watched those films.
What a surprise, before sunrise and call my by your name are my top two films (of all time probably) thanks for making this comparison video.
beautiful video essay. thank you for ur work!!
So well put!
Thank you for this video, so touching
Superb work, I enjoyed this immensely. Emotionally powerful viewing for sure but I'd not hesitate in recommending your analysis be viewed. 👍👏👏👏💐😍
Absolutely stunning video essay. I'm tingling.
Ok. Ready to enter this dreamlike romance any time. This is such a great video, superbly explained.
10 years ago, i wouldn't never have believe one of my top 10 favorite movie would be a romance. The dreamlike aspect is probably the element I prefer. No one is disturbing the romance with drama. Just the end of summer. Man, I hate the end of summer so much :(
two of my favorite films in one video thank you so much
This is so beautiful. It had me in tears
Amazing info for writers...Thank you so much!
This was SO GOOD. Bravo, and thank you.
Call me by your name is my favorite book and movie. Just the most beautiful romantic story, and the actors in the movie is so good!Even started crying by looking at these clips from the movie.. it’s so good
Thank you SO MUCH for this beautiful ( and romantic ) video!
What a masterpiece, Ur video! Thanks for making it. 💐
I just found your channel thanks to this video, and i'm amazed by your skills. This is such a well thought out video.
I loved Call me by your name and now i'm very curious about Before Sunrise since i've never heard it before. I'm definitely going to check it out.
Thanks so much for the presentation of your thought, very profound especially when you put the two films together
Thank you thank you thank you. Such a beautiful and inspiring analysis.
Thanks for making this comparison. I also felt a resamblence between this two films, but I couldn't express it do to my lack the l of cinematographic knowledge. Wonderful analysis and editing. Thanks a lot!
I'm ugly crying right now because gosh I was waiting so much for a beautiful comparison as this one.
Both CMBYN and Before Sunrise transport you to somewhere like heaven that may only last for a while, but it's like time itself just stopped to make them live in there as much as it were possible. And you can feel that, you know? You truly feel part of the story. For me, both films are so intimate that you feel you are a character more of the story. As you were the main and to feel that watching a film is so incredible... CMBYN really marked a before and after in my life becase of it.
Really great video as always.
These are my two favorite movies. I’m so excited for this comparison video
fuck. the dream world thing is super true, that's why i love well done romance films-they are an escape. LOVED hearing that deleted narrator bit at the end, thanks for making this
I didn't know you featured CMBYN and here you are making me cry again. ♥️
Excellent analysis. And Vision of Gideon by Sufjan Stevens playing in the backgroundis so calming. I subscribed. Pls keep posting
