    These films reinforce the trust in love or the possibility of finding it, at least once. But then the reality you face every day, of hatred, cynicism, sadism, lack of empathy - drives you to disbelieve in any magic at all. And then again, once in a while, a book or a film help rebuild that hope. And you again pick yourself up, piece by piece, to look for that light at the end of the tunnel.

      My two all time favorite romantic films - CMBYN and the second film in the 'Before' trilogy - 'Before Sunset' set in Paris. The last 5 - 10 minutes of Before Sunset is no doubt one of the best movie endings of all time! Please do yourself a favour and watch this trilogy. Of course, CMBYN is equally as stunning (the book even better!) and I can't wait for the sequel film to come out in a few year's time! The soundtrack to both CMBYN and Before Sunset are also among my favorites 👍😀

    Someone, somewhere wrote down almost hastily in my unattended notebook left opened, the brief time I went to the till to chat and tip for my coffee and croissant because of not only the service but of the smile I was given when I was having closure in a relationship. I guess they could read my face on that particular day, those lines read as follows ... ''You have loved, they haven't , it hurts when they are gone but your inner satisfaction knowing that you have given your best will stop the bleeding and a silent stream of joy will sing along in your heart from those fleeting memories

    I knew someone was going to draw a comparison between these two films. Luca Guadagnino clearly has his influences in check. If he makes a series of Call Me by Your Name films similar to Richard Linklater's Before films, I'd be all in for it.

    • @LikeStoriesofOld

      Call Me By Your Name 2 is reportedly in the works - and it will indeed be similar to the Before Trilogy :)

    • @yeehengyeh
      @yeehengyeh 5 років тому +4

      You might be interested to know that CMBYN is apparently the third part of what Guadagnino calls his Desire Trilogy - the films don't share the same characters and story progression like the Before trilogy, but might be worth checking out!

      MsAnnTaylor The author of the first book André Aciman already wrote and released the sequel called “Find Me”. I think the movie sequel will be based on that book. Luca Guadagnino said that he is developing the script and wants everyone from the first movie back, but because of the coronavirus pandemic they had to put everything to a halt.

    When he said the first love haven't been corrupted by cynicism, that makes me teared up a bit. I haven't had my first love, but when I look around my friends who already passed their first, second, third,... many of them looked back those love with bitterness and regrets, with an uncaring, a wrong person. That fills me so much sadness.

    Ha!!! I just watched CMBYN today!! I loved it. Felt very sensual and physical and tangible, which I think is very difficult for film to do. Sometimes (mediocre) films can just feel like disjointed images, thereby undermining the atmosphere- or the dreamworlds as you said.
    I'm a classics student as well, so the subtle parallel between their homosexual romance and the presence of Greco-Roman statues, implying by extension the presence of homosexuality in the ancient world....you know, the ancient Greeks and Romans didn't even think of sexuality as a preference. It was all about desire. No matter if the desired was masc. or fem.
    And I felt like that when I watched it. That it didn't matter they were both male, I was watching two people desire each other like Alexander the Great and Hephaistion (mentioned in "Mystery of Love" on the soundtrack).

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 6 років тому +8

      So true and I'm glad to see our cultures are trying to let go of these "preferences" once again. All we need is love.

    The thing you said about "the feeling that the before trilogy gave you but you couldn't find it in other movies until you saw call me by your name" made me realize that i felt in the same way. I can't explain why those emotions are so intense too. I cried again while watching this video for example, it just brings back the feelings.
    Thank you for this video. I love it, perfect analysis.

  • @KnowTrentTimoy

    That discussion Elio has with his father close to the end of the movie was one of the most deeply touching and educational moments I have ever had the pleasure of watching in a film. I learned that it's ok to endure that kind of love loss and to use it as a springboard to make yourself more available for love in the future. What a novel idea.

  • @elvchenschwarz6217
    @elvchenschwarz6217 6 років тому +49

    It's wierd how this gives me a better understanding of a romance that just ended. I hope that closure follows after the bittersweet pain. I didn't expect to learn for my own life to this extent from an interpretation of romance movies.

  • @debapriyoghosh5017
    @debapriyoghosh5017 6 років тому +41

    Aaahhh, this was pure sublime. A film becomes an instant classic, when it spawns countless interpretations, analysis, and dissection of its own....by that standpoint, both CMBYN and the Before Sunrise series could be labelled as classics. And your fantastic study of both the films, keeping with their various elements is a masterclass in itself. I wanted to shed some drops of tears by the time your video was over. Thank you so much for such lovely insights to these timeless movie magic:)

  • @danielborza4399
    @danielborza4399 5 років тому +5

    Language is way too limited for me to express how much I love and respect these movies. Truly the top. And so is this analysis. As well is impossible for me to watch Call me by your name without crying at the father's monologue, I couldn't hold it with this video. There's something profoundly, deeply true about this quote with the stars. However I never experienced love like the ones we see in the films, I'm afraid it's already too late for that. Sadly in the world, cynisism wins. I'm not sure if it's possible to recover from it. I certainly hope so.
    Thank you for your work! It means more than you could probably realise.

  • @CRFSUIGENERIS
    @CRFSUIGENERIS 5 років тому +15

    I have a hardened heart, yet I tear up when I watch these things.
    Perhaps the tears are for my kinder and more hopeful self. I don’t miss the person, as much as who I used to be- a brighter earnest tender and giving being.
    I will switch my naïveté for detached discernment. Romance and connection can be everyday without an “other” to share with.

    these are my two favourite movies of all time, and i know their style isnt for everyone, but i will continue rewatching these films forever because they mean so much to me. until watching this video i didnt realize how much they really have in common. i cant put into words how much i love these two movies. i think mastering characters and emotions and the connection between two characters is such a hard task and its so much easier to write an epic movie plot, but to really get into the minds and hearts of life-like movie characters and have the actors portray it in such a way that seems so real, is just so rare and beautiful.
    i watch most youtube videos at 2X speed (just because lol) but this video i watched at normal speed, i wanted to soak in every word, and just like these two movies, i never wanted it to end

    I absolutely loved call me by your name and the book it is based on is equally beautiful. The movie separates the film from Elio(the main character) more than the book. In the book it is narrated in first person as a man looking back fondly andwith melancholy on a summer while in the movie we are living the summer with him. Which is part of the reason why the film pleases me a bit more. But anyway, I just wanted to share that the quote in the book is”we found the stars you and I. And this is given only once” made me ball my eyes out after I read it.

    Amazing reflexión (i don't know how to write that word in English) jaja. Call me by your name is one of my favorite movies ever. It made me feel in a way that I didn't know it was possible while experiencing a movie. I just couldn't think about anything else when I was watching it, because i was totally immersed on it.

    Such an amazing comparison! I love these two films. I was shocked when you added a clip of Before We Go (which is another favorite movie of mine) because at last now I know what's the feeling that I felt when I watched those films.

    10 years ago, i wouldn't never have believe one of my top 10 favorite movie would be a romance. The dreamlike aspect is probably the element I prefer. No one is disturbing the romance with drama. Just the end of summer. Man, I hate the end of summer so much :(

    I'm ugly crying right now because gosh I was waiting so much for a beautiful comparison as this one.
    Both CMBYN and Before Sunrise transport you to somewhere like heaven that may only last for a while, but it's like time itself just stopped to make them live in there as much as it were possible. And you can feel that, you know? You truly feel part of the story. For me, both films are so intimate that you feel you are a character more of the story. As you were the main and to feel that watching a film is so incredible... CMBYN really marked a before and after in my life becase of it.
