Great video! I find unlicensed games and their company history fun to learn about. One thing I wondered about unlicensed games but never really asked was what happened if someone called the Nintendo Tips Powerline asking for help on an unlicensed game. What was their response protocol, if any. Was it a simple "sorry that game is not in our system" or did they ream you out for buying an unlicensed game, or somewhere it between? It was common back in this era and even toward the late 90s for a game company to have their own 1-900 tips line, and maybe that was the publishers workaround, but that doesn't really answer what Nintendo did.
They simply said that game was not in their system and suggest that you contact the company that made the game. I asked Nintendo themselves in 2012. They were extremely helpful with many questions I had. I wasn't able to get a schematic for the NES, but I was able to get a tremendous amount of information about their partnership with Atari. There's next to no information about it online and what information out there is scant or completely wrong. I wrote an article about it many years ago but was lost to time.

Wisdom Tree's use of Christian imagery is a 10000 IQ move on Dan Lawton's part, especially considering how he didn't actually did it out of piety but rather to give the Big N a holy middle finger as Dan is, at least at that time, an atheist and so were some of his colleagues; there was another story about WT's inception in that a certain Color Dreams employee moonlighted as a Sunday School teacher and thus gave them the idea of selling faith-based games as an untapped market. Considering how Nintendo would have faced immense opposition from conservative Christian parents especially from the Bible Belt, Dan's tactic worked if only out of equally cynical pragmatism. Another interesting story was that of Super 3D Noah's Ark: an urban legend states that id Software gave them the sources to Wolf3D to spite at Nintendo for forcing them to censor the game on SNES; id denied that such an incident took place and maintained that they were simply a Wolf3D engine licensee. And it seems like as though Color Dreams didn't simply rebrand as Wisdom Tree either; Dan Lawton moved on from game development and turned his attention towards CCTV systems, later doing business as Stardot Technologies.
Ironically, the anti-religious policies that Nintendo of America had were more Atheist/Humanist in form than what Dan Lawton and his team at Color Dreams/Wisdom Tree did back in those days. Also, Atheism, Humanism, Hedonism, and all of their related ilk are all ironically religions in and of themselves, and they also exist ironically because of egotistical a s s h u r t over being unable to live a Burger King kind of life, namely, they cannot have it their ways in their lives. Finally, the worship of people, states, ideas, and concepts were, as well as still are, also de facto cults, and/or cults of personality, not unlike what Jim Jones, or that guy that made Heaven's Gate did, and, furthermore, without religions to rail against, then Atheism, Humanism, Hedonism, and all of their related ilk, literally, as well as ironically, philosophically, logically, rationally, and reasonably, all have no reason, purpose, need, or use to even exist in the first place, thus, like a zombie horde that had run out of fresh b o d i e s to eat, the zombie horde will naturally begin to c a n n i b a l i z e on its fittest members until their numbers are d e p l e t e d .

Nintendo having a lockdown like they did, at least how it was explained to me, was due to the video game crash in 1983. Just awful games being churned out. I can get why Nintendo did that as to not have yet another crash. But I can't condone it. The reason being is that there have been unlicensed games, mainly Tengen, have been higher quality than some official games bearing the "Nintendo Seal of Quality". *Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde enter the chat*
The claim that Nintendo made the lockout system to deter bad games is a complete lie. Nintendo was driven by profit, nothing else. There were lots of terrible licensed games, look at games by Hi-Tech Expressions, some by LJN and the Rocky and Bullwinkle game.
Very true. On Atari, anyone could make a game and sell it, no matter how good or bad it was. With Nintendo, there was some quality control, even if some games weren't great.
@@KoopaMedia64 I think maintaining quality was important in the wake of the US video game crash. You can't argue anything was worse than Action 52 in terms of quality but it also helped prevent lewd games being produced like in the previous generation.
Complete lie. It was not due to licensing, just preventing piracy. Atari had a deal with Nintendo in 1983, and was willing to still work with them in 1984, even after Atari took a dump on the deal of a lifetime. Why doesn't anyone ask about why Atari filled up that landfill? Why did they throw away perfectly good inventory that coukd be recycled, like Atari was known to do? It was all because the deal they had with Nintendo. Nintendo would manufacture the Atari version of the NES and Atari would have the boxes made. Atari would have made millions from that stupid easy deal. They needed a facility to do all that in. They cleared out a facility and was gearing up to start production. The brand new president of Atari told Nintendo to take a hike. Nintendo was so mad that they decided they would just release the damn thing anyway. The lockout chip had nothing to do with bad games, just piracy. The UK had the lockout chip but was made worse with going ahead with Mattel as the localization console manufacturer. The Mattel NES story is a huge mess and made Nintendo not care about Europe as a whole because of it. The game crash should be called what it really was, The North American Game Bubble Burst. Nowhere else had the same issues that north America did. The UK was more into home computing, Europe as a whole was as well. Japan didn't even notice. The overwhelming majority of the world at the time was concerned with computing. The Warsaw pact countries didn't even have western gaming.
