On these Cliff Burton bass only videos I always see people complaining about the people who say he's sloppy but I can never find any comments calling him sloppy
I love how many people don’t understand what a Bass sounds like when you’re playing fast and with your fingers, this is what it sounds like and this sounds fucking AWESOME.

When they played these faster bpm songs Cliff was "sloppier" mostly because he was limited to two finger playing (couldn't use that ring finger). That's my opinion anyway 🤷♂️

I think his choice of playing gallops instof following the guitars 1:1 was very smart as it accentuates the downbeat which is bit hard to discern on the original mix with the kick drum so quiet.
They’re both great bassists. I respect both of them for different reasons. However, I must say that if Cliff had not died that night and was still alive, most people, if not all, would be calling Cliff the superior player.
Both are great IMO. Cliff was one of the best fingers players of all time, while Ellefson (and Jason) prove that you don't 100% have to use fingers to be great. I wonder what Metallica would've been if Cliff was here. Who knows? Maybe we could've still had AJFA, albeit without Blackened...

Some parts are unnecessarily low but this isolated bass track really shows how much Girth Burton's bass gives to the song especially when his bass kicks in as you said and at around 3:45 on the album/3:49 on this video.
If you think this is sloppy, think about how skilled he is and the fact that he had the ability to do multiple takes if he so pleased. He was obviously comfortable with it sounding like this, or he would've done it differently.
I'd rather think about how "dead" the bass sounds in most modern rock recordings where they take a few decent enough takes from the sessions and polish, cut and paste until every note is perfectly timed and compressed to the very same level as the previous and following note. Cliffs bass tracks weren't perfect in any way but they definitely did the job!
There's always gonna be some "imperfections" in a hard edged metal track-- nothing wrong with that -- it's how it sits in the mix with guitars that matters. Cliff is slamming - period. Too many critics in the room-- betcha none of them has recorded with a loud band in a studio situation before.
Exactly I play bass with two fingers and I have the same clanky sound as Cliff Burton and Fieldy. Which I keep practicing to keep up with the likes of Cliff Burton, Mike Flores, John Entwistle and Steve Digorgio.
How old was he at this time? Like 22? What were y'all doing at 22? He was playing and writing music in the biggest metal band of all time. For 22, this is insane.
He had a very unique approach and thus some awkward sounding riff transitions. But make no mistake he was incredibly precise. its actually very apparent if you listen more than once.

Listen to some random track. I picked Master of Puppets, and his timing is not very good. Same with Creeping Death. And I have a very hard time believing he is more precise live than on an album. Don't get me wrong. I like it, but timing is far from perfect.
I love the bass guitar. This is one of my favorite Metallica songs. Cliff was so freeking bad ass on the bass! I don't play but if I was going to learn, bass would be the instrument. Cliff would be the inspiration. RIP Mr. Burton
HECKproductions I am one of cliff's biggest fans and I use wah and distortion when I play and I play in a metallica tribute act, and I think this is sloppy. It's OK to say it. It is. You don't have to say everything he did was perfect. He is brilliant and this sounds bad by itself and sloppy. I much preferred his tone live than on record (except his solo tone, he had that down). He will never be forgotten for his awesome song writing and his great playing, but this is sloppy. ;p

The reason why you see so many complaints about "sloppy playing" and next to 0 actual comments calling it sloppy is because the few that didn't get deleted were downthumbed out of sight. Plus, there was one in particular from a user who kept arguing about it named RexlsYourGod (lower case L instead of upper case I), and I can't even find his YT account anymore. Summary - The comments 4 or 5+ years old rebutting the "sloppy" complaints are in response to comments that were here at some point. Anything newer than that, I agree. I don't know what the hell they're on about.

NumberNEINLarge personally I think it's slightly more difficult to play it this way. Slightly more stamina is required to play straight 16ths but the gallops are tough to time and the chorus fills are close to impossible to play the way Cliff did.
If you think it sounds sloppy its only cuz hes playing tight to Lars' slop, thats why with all the instruments it sounds so tight. He held it together for James to do his thing.

It's not sloppy. Cliff was, I think, the greatest loss the metal world ever had. Nobody else could have done for Metallica what Burton did, and Metallica is only half a band without him.
Ppl forget that Cliff is covering for Lars and melding the drums with Hetfield's too-precise guitar tracks. Cli'ff bass was nearly a literal adhesive for the band.
I have the official Metallica bass tab book for ride the lightning and after listening to this I can tell you the bass tab for FFWF in that book is definitely not the same as this. Nice to hear how it actually goes!!
You'd be surprised at how "sloppy" a lot of the great bassists actually are once you listen to all the Isolated Tracks....even Geddy Lee sounds a bit messy, but once the rest of the music is mixed in, it sounds precise. I've been playing bass guitar for about thirty years, and I can tell you that it's a messy beast to manage....more of an ensemble piece, as opposed to a solo instrument in most cases....
So true. If you really paid it mind, what Cliff is doing is actually quite genius. He's filing space between the guitars and drums, contributing to the wall of sound. The loud, rough fartiness of his tone is part of that.

From a technical point of view, this might be his most impressive performance on a Metallica record ever, even though I prefer his bass lines on Seek and Destroy, Fade to Black, Orion etc.

2 fingers? I'm clearly hearing gallops on the main riff, and as far as I know bass (I'm a apprentice player) there's no way to make gallops that fast with only 2 fingers

He played it hard and aggressive for a reason. These are metal songs. It added flavor to the final mix. This track is not meant to be listened to by itself. Listen to the final song....phenomenal...thats all that matters.

People complaining about him being sloppy, there are things you need to consider. He is playing with fingers, the song is really fast, the timing of the rhythm is awkward, the bass is recorded after the drums, and we all know Lars timing isn't the best, so blame him for it being off at times.
These bass only tracks are not meant to be listened by themselves. So, it may indeed be that is will not sound right because that is not has it is intended be listened to. These bass tracks are good for learning the bass parts of these songs because the bass sound is usually somewhat hidden. You have to pay attention and/or have a good ear to hear the bass parts distinctly with guitars and drums kind of covering up the bass sound. However, without a bass sound in a piece of rock or metal music it will be somewhat shallow and weak. So, you do not realize when it is there. However, you will notice something does not sound right if it is not. It is important to rock and metal. However, one can play the bass by itself and have it sound right. I myself have produced tracks on youtube. Horrid Hop, Serpent Sacrament, Juggernaught Groove, and serveral others that I have created. Click on my face to listen to them. But I love this! I didn't realize Cliff was doing the chordal thing in the intro, Thats's a prime example of him introducing melodies to Metallica's sound. 2 fingers? I'm clearly hearing gallops on the main riff, and as far as I know bass (I'm a apprentice player) there's no way to make gallops that fast with only 2 fingers

He played it hard and aggressive for a reason. These are metal songs. It added flavor to the final mix. This track is not meant to be listened to by itself. Listen to the final song....phenomenal...thats all that matters.

People complaining about him being sloppy, there are things you need to consider. He is playing with fingers, the song is really fast, the timing of the rhythm is awkward, the bass is recorded after the drums, and we all know Lars timing isn't the best, so blame him for it being off at times.
I don't see any comments calling it sloppy but fuck trying to keep up with a young James Hetfield haha
These bass only tracks are not meant to be listened by themselves. So, it may indeed be that is will not sound right because that is not has it is intended be listened to. These bass tracks are good for learning the bass parts of these songs because the bass sound is usually somewhat hidden. You have to pay attention and/or have a good ear to hear the bass parts distinctly with guitars and drums kind of covering up the bass sound. However, without a bass sound in a piece of rock or metal music it will be somewhat shallow and weak. So, you do not realize when it is there. However, you will notice something does not sound right if it is not. It is important to rock and metal. However, one can play the bass by itself and have it sound right. I myself have produced tracks on youtube. Horrid Hop, Serpent Sacrament, Juggernaught Groove, and serveral others that I have created. Click on my face to listen to them. But I love this! I didn't realize Cliff was doing the chordal thing in the intro, Thats's a prime example of him introducing melodies to Metallica's sound. And u gotta love that aggressive playing and tone.

The bass does play it's own thing. It doesn't follow the guitars the entire time which is why some bass parts played differently
