    PAD......I would like to relay to you and your followers my story. This will be long, so please bear with me. It is worth hearing. In the early 1980's I was a letter carrier for Canada Post. There was a tobacco shop by the bus stop were I would depart out to my route, and I would go into his store to buy a pack of cigarettes. The employee at the counter would serve me and offer a cup of coffee. After a few days I inquired about the pipes and the wonderful smell of the pipe tobacco I was smelling. He sold me my first pipe ( a Butz Choquin for $ 19.95 ). I was immediately hooked and became a good friend of that employee, and he steered me to which pipes I should buy. I now have a fantastic pipe collection that numbers over 50 pipes. This is way more pipes than I need , but finding a friend and a knowable source of information has made my pipe smoking life a pleasure.

    Very well done sir. You’re old school. Happy with what makes you happy. The instabooks and boob tubes of the world have made this and many other hobbies into a” look what I have and you don’t” kind of place. You’re approach is very much appreciated and refreshing. Cheers

    Nice video done at a beautiful place. Cane Rod Piper did one along a similar line recently. Seems like most of us long time pipe enthusiasts are on the same page. I've got more pipes and tobacco than I'll ever need. still, every once in a while I run into a pipe I can't live without. It's madness but fun...cheers.

    I have a touch of both afflictions I'm afraid. But mostly the pad right now. I laughed when you talked about Monday pipe, Tuesday pipe, etc. I keep switching things around and some mornings before work I stare at the pipe racks trying to figure out what I want to put in the pipe bag for the day. If I don't figure out a system soon I think I'm going to go mad!

    Interesting subject and take on it. I came to pipes a few years ago from about five years with cigars. I like how they are two separare, yet related worlds. With cigars, there's CAD. Pipes, we have two avenues to chase. For me, my dad left me a large collection of pipes from the mid sixties to the early seventies. I refurbed a hsndful and they are a nice reminder of pops. As for TAD, can confirm that I have to restrain myself for a bit as I am needing more room now for my growing collection. I do not want to get so deep that I have more baccy than time. 🙄

  • @TayloraMadeY

    I totally agree. In the beginning I had both bad. But now days I mainly suffer from tad (mainly nasal snuff) and pipes just kinda fall into my lap. I mainly smoke c&d old Joe krantz and star of the east. But I always love trying something new. I still collect both seeing as I'm 30 and have a long road ahead of me.

    I’m just now getting into pipe smoking after quitting cigs. Luckily I inherited my Fathers large collection of very nice pipes. I really don’t know anything about them but most look to be high end. Some of them are really beautiful pieces, most seem to be Italian. Crazy thing is that all the tobacco he had stashed away seems to be perfectly fine to smoke even though it’s been 10 years since he passed. I haven’t even begun to See what I have. But it sure is fun yet bittersweet going through all of Dads prized possessions and catching that aroma that I took for granted when he was still around.
    Anyway, I really have enjoyed your videos the past couple weeks. I have been watching a lot lately but keep gravitating back to your page. Thanks for sharing your expertise and stories. Please keep doing what your doing

    You see, I've had this issue now, for the past two and a half years. On average, I usually order somewhere between 10-20 tins or a partial mixture of tins and bulk pipe tobacco a month, be it a mix of English, Virginia, Burley and Aromatics. I also average a new pipe per month. So one or the other, or both, I've got it! I just hope I don't go to the same extremes I went to with cds, vinyl records, cassettes and dvds, let alone die cast cars and model trains! I just don't have the space I once had. By the way. Have you had a chance to check out "Elwood Maker's" video on his pipes and tobaccos for 2018? He has amassed quite the huge collection of pipe tobacco! Great subject and video, and would like to see more to come!

    Great topic. This is my third foray in to pipe smoking. Has to get rid of my first pipe collection . My first wife was very anti-smoking of any kind.
    I tried in tge middle but 8t did not last long. Still have four
    pipes from then. Added a 673
    Savinelli and a Rhodesian but am being cautious about pipe buying. Trying to do tge same with tobaccos. Trying to get a sm rotation. Love OJK and HB.

    I do enjoy trying new things now and again but now I mostly smoke, as you say, what satisfies.
    which is:
    gawith hoggarth ennerdale flake
    gawith hoggarth coniston cut plug
    gawith hoggarth spirit of scotland

    Very Interesting topic, I'm pretty much settled on what I prefer as tobacco, Burleys and vapers + British Otc's and hardly any latakia blends these days, moreover, lately I been into those estates refurbished Britwoods , all this is a bad sign again, but I must confess after having bought few of those British manufacturer pipes from 60-70 I can say no of my newer medium to medium-high price range pipes (regardless of the brand be it Savinelli or Peterson or Stanwell)smoke so well and effortlessly as those older ones do,nontheless as a rule the large majority of these older production pipes are lighter in weight ye thin-walled so they do not seem to like hard puffing. Best Greets, Looking forward to another one, Greets, Paul

      Hi John, you mesmerize me... Your videos are so relaxing, informative and by golly... You sure know how to get the best out of your Savinelli's. I am a Canadian(Toronto Ontario) living in England. My personal preference in tobacco is Peterson and Solani aromatics. I smoke Falcons and Peterson mainly. But your favorite "Haunted Bookshop" is not easily a available in the UK, I can't wait to give it a go as soon as I can. Keep up the good work John, I love your Pipes and Ponderance theme. I can see why those new to pipe smoking find enjoyment in trying the many new blends and pipes.
    For me, my interest lies more in comparing the very few I typically smoke to something new but similar... a new twist. I suppose after all the experimenting I’ve done with blends and pipe styles, I found what I like. But the curiosity never stops...

    • @Matches860
      @Matches860  5 років тому

      Oh yes, there are so many ways to explore tobaccos! I believe my favorite two adventures were looking into complex blends, and then cigar leaf.

    • @pipesetc.5608
      @pipesetc.5608 5 років тому

      Matches860 The journey through various blend types is what keeps many engaged in this pastime. Each can go their own direction at their own pace. Sharing these experiences makes it all the more enjoyable.
      As far as cigar leaf blends, I am not as familiar but do enjoy LJ Peretti’s “Cuban Mixture” and “Dundee” as well as GL Pease’s “Key Largo”. I have also been wanting to try C&D’s “Seersucker”...

    • @Matches860
      @Matches860  5 років тому

      Matches860 I certainly agree about the L.J. Peretti blends! Their “No 8 Slice” is to me what “Haunted Bookshop” is to you. I also regularly enjoy their “Tashkent”, “Royal”, “British Blend” “London Flake” and “Blend No 52”... to name a few. 👍

      Never, ever, take serious pipe advice from anyone else. There are so many variables among pipes that you really need to experience those things yourself. What is good or bad to me is the opposite for someone else. Anyway, I do like a Peterson (non-system) pipe and have several.

      Hey Beans! Thanks for coming by! Now I am wondering if you pipe makers/repairers tend to go more with tobaccos since you're fiddling with pipes 24/7?

      I suspect it was a problem with our modem, but don't know that for sure. I am entertaining the idea of trying again, especially with the colder weather coming. Not sure I'll be able to stick to any kind of schedule, but we'll see what happens in a few weeks.

    Enough tobaccooo?what??? that is blasphemy as it is .Say 3 year ago somebody would say this;ahh.. i have enough MacLellend tobaccos ,they gonna be readily available .Imagine that dudes face when he learns that his favourite brand is just gone .Scratch of the had and cursing .In atention to all of my beloved pipe sisters and brothers .NO MATTER HOW POPULAR OR READILY AVAILABLE A BRANCH IS ,THEY CAN BE GONE IN A HEARTBEAT!!!!!So GRAB IT !!!STASH IT!!!THERE IS NO SUCH THING ;TOO MUCH TOBACCO.In only this case ignore what John says,but we love him regardless(or he is afraid that his wife watch hes video and to bring ease to her he say this just to camouflage his ginormous aquisitions)
