  • Political parties, neither mentioned in the Constitution nor foreseen by the Founders, arose almost immediately and have, generally speaking, served the nation well. The two-party system as we know it today dates to the 1850s. This first CCA of the 2016-2017 academic year will consider the origin and development of the party system, as well as the history, principles, and current state of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Larry P. Arnn is the twelfth president of Hillsdale College, where he is also a professor of politics and history. He received his B.A. from Arkansas State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from the Claremont Graduate School. He also studied at Worcester College, Oxford University, where he served as director of research for Sir Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill.

I've been listening to random Larry Arnn speeches while canning strawberry jam today. I finished 36 pints and learned beautiful truths from a tremendously gifted, wise human.

Thank you, you just named the problem with the colleges of today with your declaration that "colleges are teaching places" which indeed they are. The prospect of places of learning, education, went out the window long ago and now colleges "teach", indoctrinate.

...Hillsdale College, whose president, Larry Arnn, the White House tagged last month to lead a 1776 Commission on “patriotic education,” had issued no statements about the events at the Capitol through public channels as of Thursday afternoon. Hillsdale didn’t return requests for comment. Its most recently posted news release was about the 1776 Commission, stating that in addition to Arnn’s involvement, Hillsdale’s vice president of Washington, D.C., operations was appointed executive director to lead the commission.

Thank you for yet another fascinating lecture. I went to Reed College back in the late 1970s and early 80s but wish that I'd gone to Hillsdale. My college advisor at Ethical Culture Fieldston in NYC never even suggested it.

The continuity framed in Mr. Vaughn’s question was correct in historical context, and extremely valid. Although having just sat through your lecture and hearing you quote referencing Lincoln and Churchill he should’ve known what type of an answer he was going to receive.

It seems both our dominate parties have no differences in conduct but diverge in rhetoric posturing. The citizens whom insist on personal identification as one party or the other seem to be claiming allegiance to rhetoric; I am unable to discern any platforms of substance or strategy and method for proper solution development or proclamation of issues being unfit for political activity (which would restrain actions contrary to Americanism). Each party seems to function as apologists for perceived issues deemed appropriate for political resolution attempts; the lack of political method is evidenced by the un-Constitutional delegations of authorities to administrators and the reactionary desperation displayed by dynamic solution cycles of unmitigated problems proclaimed as politically appropriate issues for the attention of elected officials. As far as individual politicians: personality and logistical entrenchment to office compose electability and certainty of character or virtue is non-existent and is necessarily absent in the climate of morphic populism we currently have. I am convinced citizens, knowingly (most prevalent for proclaimed Republicans) or unwittingly (most prevalent for proclaimed Democrats), seek the Rule of Law=equality of protection of property rights and equality of access to commercial engagement. Voting in the right people, so we can address the abuses of the unelected, unaccountable administrative bureaucracies is futile. The federal government will NEVER limit their own power. Only through an Article V, Convention of the States can 'We the People' limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and address that 4th branch.

any good will not be possible, or will evaporate immediately, if we do not return or stray from the gold standard.
When you have a money printer, you can get anything done, pay any bribe, meet anyones price… any person, corporation or even country. When you distort money, you distort relationships… you distort reality… and nothing is what it seems, or should be.

I would strongly disagree the parties have served the nation. Most success are despite the parties not because of them while so many of the shortcoming in our history can be directly tied to the misdeeds of the parties.

Without watching this video, I’m going to express my opinion right now. The Republican Party today is a joke of weak men not taking action towards the goal of keeping this country to a higher standard. We, as a nation, lost moral, ethnics. I rather say that my opinion or view does not reflect to every single republican; and I say I’m a Conservative.
I will watch this video later and then I will see how wrong I am, according to Mr. Arnn’s lecture !

For charity to be charitable it CANNOT be mandated by law; doing so is Theocracy not DEMOCRACY.
charity: 5. Indulgence or forbearance in judging others. 6. Often Charity. Theology. The virtue defined as love directed first toward God but also toward oneself and one’s neighbors as objects of God’s love. (p.322)

Winston Churchill must be turning in his grave. Churchill was not against socialism, but he preferred liberalism and he despised dictators. Moreover, the two-party system combined with low voter turn-out is the bane of US democracy, not socialism. Socialism is not a contrary view to free markets, but students at Hillsdale should understand that there is not and never will be a 'perfect' free market. All economies are MIXED and must be mixed unless we adapt a purely non-altruistic, objectivist society a la Ayn Rand--in which case the rich and the poor will be separated by a chasm like the one we experienced in Britain in the 1700s prior to creating this nation. Perhaps that is what Larry Arnn wants? Not I. The best countries in the world, including the United States and Scandinavia, the UK, France, Australia, New Zealand, all support social democracies where taxpayers share in the leveraged care of their communities. Good and ethical governance of both private and public companies is the key to a successful democratic and capitalistic economy. Socialism is but a euphemism for humanitarian governance. There is a KEEN difference between the dictatorial forms of socialism practiced by Franco, Mussolini, or Lenin. The US is not nor ever need be another Venezuela. Stop the moral panic and yes, read your constitution, and practice humane, conscious capitalism in one of the best social democracies in the world.
