Yeah as a Sonic fan I can say that Yes, some Sonic games are fucking awful. But I think people like to try Sonic once, not understand it, then call it shit and not learn it's fundamentals so then even if it is a good or bad game it's just all lumped together as bad. Disappointing really.

After that, they see all of the new games and think they're too "gimmicky" so they don't try them. I don't think it's that they "don't understand them" as they aren't complex games with a ton of mechanics that you need to master to beat it. The last sonic game that everyone loved was generations, as it brought back the classic formula, but also showed the improvements of the 3d games. Then they followed it up with forces, which people thought the character creation levels were a gimmick.

You can say the chao garden was fun, but even then, that got overly repetitive. If I were to rate it id be 1.6/5 Only 1/3 of the game is actually fun.

If you gotta go slow in old Sonic games... You aint playing it right. The idea is to learn the obstacles, to memorize the layout to maximize your effieciency and eventually to make it muscle memory... I can see how that wouldnt appeal to all gamers, though. I was never a huge fan of the franchise, but I can see how some are Edit: Karl is so wholesome!
To be fair the first game legit does have this problem, where after Green Hill the levels are designed in a way where speed just isn't possible at all, but thankfully Sonic 2 gets over the issue and is way way better for it
@@DiscoInfernum Sonic 2? Meh, it has better physics than sonic 1 but it does instakill you a lot for going fast so you have to slow down on first playthrough. Sonic CD on the other hand now that's the one game you can keep running without ever slowing down on your first try.
@@thechugg4372 Yeah that doesn't contradict my point, the levels are tricky at first but as you play the game and slowly master it speed becomes a lot easier to achieve. It's a learning process but you CAN speed through the levels in Sonic 2. In Sonic 1 you legit cannot go fast in a lot of levels, they're structured in a way where you have to slow down to do puzzles or ride moving objects to proceed rather than allowing you to avoid that through skilful play like the great 2D Sonic games (2,3,Mania) do
I do not think it was terrible, but it was a game that basically fought against Mario and got a lot of sales, a lot of people played it and more games came, eventually developed a fandom and basically just made a pretty mediocre game into something that a lot of people hold close to their hearts

The game grumps did just as much if not more damage to Sonic's reputation as Sonic Team themselves. They're the ones who really promoted the idea that Sonic was always terrible when they cherry picked the worst of the worst Sonic games and made it seem like the whole franchise was like that.
Well it also doesnt help that Arin is completely inept at videogames to the point where his opinion is almost impossible to take seriously, and I'm talking Dean Takahashi cuphead tutorial levels of ineptitude here. I have no issue with someone disliking sonic adventure 2 or Sonic Colours even though I love them both (hell I think Sonic 1 and Sonic CD are pretty bad games so its not like I can talk) but I'd expect them to dislike them after actually playing them rather than just taking the word of IGN and Egoraptor. When you’re young and playing a video, you might not remember the name of the exact console years later. I certainly didn’t until recently when I looked into it again. I grew up playing sonic and the originals too, didn’t remember the console name because it was when I was pretty young and didn’t care what I was playing on.

Ok. I don't think I've left a criticizing comment on a video before, mostly because I've never wanted to disrespect creators who put good work into making content, but also because I don't feel strongly enough to care about stuff to comment. However, Watching this podcast kind of leaves me feeling like I want more from it, not because its too short or something but because I think it leaves a lot to be desired with the commentary and lack of some structure. I'm not totally sure what amount effort is put into these, like if they just sit down and talk about whatever, I can understand that. I can also understand how trying to keep up for 241 episodes of a podcast can make it difficult to remain consistent. But honestly it kind of feels like there could have been more time spent on the questions and topics for Karl and not having him sit there mostly silent for most of the podcast. Now maybe I'm just the one not understanding what the vibe of these podcasts are supposed to be, as I've only seen 5 or 6 of them up to this point and unlike longtime watchers I may not be just used to these. And its a valid argument to just say this podcast isn't for me, however much like the Fredrik Knusden video there's just so much people talking over each other and not really sticking to the topics with the guest. The latter isn't necessarily a bad thing, as these are podcasts not scripted videos and literally the appeal of a podcast is it being more casual, but compounded with former it just makes it a kind of difficult listening experience. You're not often hearing the hosts bounce off of the guest in a very meaningful way(this is all subjective of course) I just didn't feel like they let Karl Elaborate or explore topics as much as they could have before getting side tracked really quickly. Which, again in my opinion, having a content creator who's known for being very in depth in his videos not be able to explore these topics fully feels like a bit of a let down for me, but maybe I'm a minority in that.

Andrew's MAIN COMPLAINT about sonic can basically be boiled down to "I suck at sonic games so I don't find them fun" Like all of his complaints were 'the game is about going fast but then there are obstacles/spikes/holes in the way so you can't go fast' -you're supposed to dodge the obstacles, you just suck at the game

Like the other commenter said, it would be great if the game was designed where you can go fast and react to things like obstacles without hitting them every two seconds. Now I’ll get a comment that says “well you just have to get good at the game” and sure, that’s true to an extent, but when I do get good at a sonic game, it’s no longer fun because to be good you have essentially memorize obstacles and button inputs where it’s just muscle memory at that point
@@danielhodson6411 I think it's quite good and I believe people unfairly judged it when it was first released. Mostly because it released right after Sonic 06 and the series rep was at a low point at the time. Nowadays it's seen in a much more positive light by the fandom, but gaming fans in general still think Sonic died mid 2000's.

I have no issue with someone disliking sonic adventure 2 or Sonic Colours even though I love them both (hell I think Sonic 1 and Sonic CD are pretty bad games so its not like I can talk) but I'd expect them to dislike them after actually playing them rather than just taking the word of IGN and Egoraptor. Oh and play the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure instead of playing DX like everyone else does, DX completely fucks up the game lol
@@DiscoInfernum I wouldn't say DX completely fucks up the game. It did mess up the lighting and changed some textures unnecessarily, but it still plays the same and they improved the framerate and made cutscenes skipable.

When you’re young and playing a video, you might not remember the name of the exact console years later. I certainly didn’t until recently when I looked into it again. I grew up playing sonic and the originals too, didn’t remember the console name because it was when I was pretty young and didn’t care what I was playing on.

Ok. I don't think I've left a criticizing comment on a video before, mostly because I've never wanted to disrespect creators who put good work into making content, but also because I don't feel strongly enough to care about stuff to comment.
However,
Watching this podcast kind of leaves me feeling like I want more from it, not because its too short or something but because I think it leaves a lot to be desired with the commentary and lack of some structure. I'm not totally sure what amount effort is put into these, like if they just sit down and talk about whatever, I can understand that. I can also understand how trying to keep up for 241 episodes of a podcast can make it difficult to remain consistent. But honestly it kind of feels like there could have been more time spent on the questions and topics for Karl and not having him sit there mostly silent for most of the podcast.
Now maybe I'm just the one not understanding what the vibe of these podcasts are supposed to be, as I've only seen 5 or 6 of them up to this point and unlike longtime watchers I may not be just used to these. And its a valid argument to just say this podcast isn't for me, however much like the Fredrik Knusden video there's just so much people talking over each other and not really sticking to the topics with the guest. The latter isn't necessarily a bad thing, as these are podcasts not scripted videos and literally the appeal of a podcast is it being more casual, but compounded with former it just makes it a kind of difficult listening experience.
You're not often hearing the hosts bounce off of the guest in a very meaningful way(this is all subjective of course) I just didn't feel like they let Karl Elaborate or explore topics as much as they could have before getting side tracked really quickly. Which, again in my opinion, having a content creator who's known for being very in depth in his videos not be able to explore these topics fully feels like a bit of a let down for me, but maybe I'm a minority in that.

Like the other commenter said, it would be great if the game was designed where you can go fast and react to things like obstacles without hitting them every two seconds. Now I’ll get a comment that says “well you just have to get good at the game” and sure, that’s true to an extent, but when I do get good at a sonic game, it’s no longer fun because to be good you have essentially memorize obstacles and button inputs where it’s just muscle memory at that point

@@danielhodson6411 I think it's quite good and I believe people unfairly judged it when it was first released. Mostly because it released right after Sonic 06 and the series rep was at a low point at the time. Nowadays it's seen in a much more positive light by the fandom, but gaming fans in general still think Sonic died mid 2000's.
