Thanks for making this. One very viable option if building a new force is to try Baccus 6mm. They have a series of packages aimed at O Group. I have painted a huge number of FoW models and just recently some Baccus 6mm tanks. The detail on the Baccus is simply STUNNING!!
Great vid Alex. I’m sold on O-Group and have been reorganising all my 10mm for NW and E Europe. It didn’t work so well in 15mm for us as we like our armoured toys so staying with Daves excellent Panzergrenadier for them in Europe and Rapid Fire in the desert. I’d like to see some options to expand O-group to Brigade level for bigger games as well.
Cheers Nick, glad you enjoyed it. It's a great game and I'm completely sold on it. I'm sure there will be bigger game options in forthcoming supplements.
Thank Alex! That’s cleared up what figures to use and how to base them. I was going to use 6mm or 10 mm figures but after seeing your American Battalion I’ll have to go for 15mm as I’ll have to paint a German Battalion to match them. I like the additional forces/support troops that are more often than not left out of Wargames. I get the feeling that with a bit of thought using a map a Brigade level game could be played using a brigade frontage map plan the attack/defence but only 1 battalion is used which in defence the necessary supports are left in an unused part of the battlefield . I’ve planned it out for a Napoleonic scenario but the club ended up blaming 1814 east of Paris. The campaign listed for over a year then petered out because one of the generals had got into a corner😕. My first chance of capturing two Corps. Unlikely because I couldn’t risk a pitched battle with only the imperial guard.
I really like the O Group battalion combat level and how the rules work, but I'm not much into the abstraction of units. Could the game be played using 1:1 or would it generate issues? I mean, in this video you are using a small FoW base with 3 models as a section, would it be possible to actually represent the entire section on diferent bases without changing the game mechanic? Like 2/3 bases of 10mm models for a section.
You might be able to do 1:1 in 6mm, the problem is, the bigger you get with the number of models the bigger your table will need to be. 10mm would work well.
You'd better go for 6mm for a 1:1 scale, but you could do it in 15mm as well. However, you'd probably want to increase your playing table. It could be done though.
I play in 6mm and have 6 figures on a section base sized 30x20mm. Had I gone for slightly bigger bases, say 30x30, I could certainly have been able to do 1:1. Problem is that the ground scale is the equivalent of ~2mm figures so the larger bases you do historical frontages may be skewed. I do 1:1 for AFVs and that’s an easy change in 6mm.
Really informative and interesting view of the "O" Group investment for the ruleset, Alex. I've enjoyed the game videos and like the mechanics I see. I have oodles of 10mm WWII sitting in the lead pile given to me from a buddy. I'm gonna bite the "O" Group bullet, dig them out and get busy.
Cheers Alex - that was really useful. I started a British Battalion last year but got lost in the composition and they sit in a box with about 60 painted. This means I won't need to expend too much effort to expand to a full battalion with supports. Might have to revisit this.
An excellent video. I'm catching up on O Group content. Just ordered the bundle pack form the Lardies. I'm going with Victrix range. Looking at building a German late war army along with a British late war, Normandy era. I'm really liking the scale and the miniatures coming out of Victrix with battalion size games in mind.
Perfect timing for me, as I've just bought the rules, and ordered the Early German army pack from Pendraken to get me started. Still deciding on base sizes, figure numbers, and what supports to add, so this is really helpful. Thanks Alex.
You are welcome, thanks. I would go with 6mm if I was starting from scratch, but I have so many 15mm already. A 1:1 scale 6mm O group project would be ace!
Interesting but not sure I would want to get into another rule set. I have Command Decision Test of Battle that I am using for my ww2 gaming. Though that game has one base is a platoon scale so its roughly the same scale as O Group.
This video is fantastic. Really helps get an idea of what's needed as someone who is new to this scale of wargaming. I would also be keen to see a similar video for other games like I ain't been shot mum. Keep up the good work
Thank you, glad it was useful. I do have a number of IABSM videos, on the channel, check out the playlist section. But I could do more videos on IABSM as it's such a good game.
Very nice video, Alex - this will definitely help newcomers to O-Group. You did leave out one important point - - how many points does Tiny cost?😸😼😸. I have a bunch of old 12mm Minifigs that painted up for FoW. They port right over to OG with no trouble at all!! I am about to start on a couple of desert battalions. I saw a couple of posts where people are asking you about doing more videos for making up battalions for other nations. What about doing one that deals with the strengths, weaknesses, tactics, etc of each army? As you indicated, the basics of building battalions are the same across the board. However, each nation’s army has a different way of playing it. Even different battalions from the same nAtion use different tactics! Just a thought.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed the video. Tiny is priceless... Yeah, that is a good idea bout the strengths and weaknesses. I already have a video about tactics and using phase lines, etc, so I could look at individual forces for another video. Good idea.
A very good video for someone (like me) who starts o group. Putting together the battalion with calculating the points has a little oldschool flair to it like list writing for WH fantasy back in the days🤟🏼🤩🫡
In the Cristot scenario both sides have a FOO with transport. It's not likely that a FOO would be wandering around on foot, so they get them for free. Don't overthink it.
Helpful video makes it a bit clearer how a battalion and support is made up, what thickness was your base as that size looks good with n3 men to base. thanks mark
@StormofSteelWargaming thanks for the quick reply , busy working out what I am goingʻ to need for my battalions I am doing one russian and one German Russians I'm using 15mm summer uniform plastic soldier company ( yes even though they dont sponsor your videos) and a box of late war Germans from them as well. Vehicles so far are plastic soldier and zvezda . Been a fan of 28mm ladies games for a while but first time I've looked at a different scale. Your videos for o group are great and the ones about combat patrols etc handy bite size guides.
Thanks Alex. Great video. Been tempted to get into O Group using 6mm figs for operation market garden. Would also like to do Battle for Guadalcanal but good 6mm imperial Japanese and USMC minis have been hard to find. Do you know if they are planning a Pacific theatre rules expansion in the future?
@@ShakosAndSprues 😂 Nope, but I’ll have large enough armies that I’ll happily play a game of O Group for a change etc, as I’d used them to play Battlegroup as well, but I’m definitely settled on FOW now 😆

Am loving the stuff you put out Please, please continue ..... oh, and a Xmas Wish List ..... a nice multi player mega bash about 2 hours long would be just something else (hint hint) mate.
Cheers buddy, glad you enjoyed the video. I have no intention of stopping anytime soon. I'll have to see about a bigger Xmas game, keep your eyes peeled...
If the platoon is the smallest battlefield unit, why split the infantry platoons into their three sections? Wouldn’t it be easier to use just one larger stand for each infantry platoon and smaller stands for the attached company/division specialty sections? I would think it save both the space needed to deploy each platoon and the number of miniatures needed.
This is a really great video Alex. It helped me understand the topic much better. As a plus the minis look fantastic. Excellent work all the way around. It will come in handy when I finally decide what scale I want to use to play.
For the artillery missions are you using 105mm howitzers ? I’m currently not sure if I’ll use a 76.2mm field gun or 120mm howitzer for my Russian army.
@@StormofSteelWargaming Plastic Soldier Company is a great, cost effective way to get into the game. My only tweak would be to base infantry squads (sections for you Brits) on Flames of War medium bases - there are a lot of FOW armies looking for new homes these days!

Thanks, no, I only made this as an example, the other battalions are covered in the rules.
Just looking into the rules for 6mm and with the FO dose he need a separate transport or can it be on the same base?
It doesn't *need* to be separate, as the FO will travel in the transport, but as long as you can differentiate if the transport is destroyed.
