Stay curious my friends. Or should I say bored? ;)

"Leisure is not the same as laziness." What a powerful thought. Active rest has become an integral part of my life as I've learned to transition from flow state to doing nothing and I try to only stay in one or the other for as long as I can. I find we often pick up a "restful" activity like Netflix but never actually fully engage in it, or fully disengage from our work, leaving us in a detrimental state of "half life." I actually just put up my own rendition of this video (how I use rest for creativity) about two weeks ago on my own channel - would love to hear your thoughts on it!
I appreciate how you tested the boredom's effectiveness with your storyboarding after. That's a really cool idea. And with the beans, it also goes to show how we can take a slow, repetitive task and make a game out of it! We are human after all - wired to seek out patterns and joy, even in something like counting beans. You've got great energy which I love, man! So happy I found this channel!
I really respect your style and outlook on life. Would appreciate if you checked my content out, not for a sub but to share in your knowledge. I think we'd connect well!

I am really surprised your channel hasn’t blown up yet.
You’re a great, articulate speaker, not mention editor. The production quality is excellent. Great job!
Loved the video. I’m now reading that book and am thinking of doing similar experiments.
It also made me ponder how detrimental multitasking can be. Thank you for making this.

when the quarantine started i immediately thought i need to spend 24/7 working on my creative stuff. But as soon as i did that i overworked myself to the point i couldn't come up with anything, as soon as I started taking breaks and let my mind wander i was able to get quality work done.

    • @CuriosityCulture

Exactly, I had a ton of pressure to make more stuff knowing I was going to be stuck at home for a little while. That way of thinking ultimately hurts you. It's all about stepping back time to time

We are all different with different kind of perspectives to life...First thing, what is boredom? Is it same for everyone?
Boredom is not 'absence' of activity at all...sometimes you could really feel bored even while doing an activity. Sitting idle while doing nothing, sometimes, could really be a leisure activity for me. So we need to define Boredom first...For me, Boredom is a state of mind where one is unable to concentrate, perhaps. I don't know...

I totally agree. The angle I took in this video is focused on letting your mind wander and reflect. I see your points :)

I specifically searched for this topic on UA-cam and found your video to be what I was looking for lol. I also had an idea of trying this. I thought, what benefit could I have using boredom? Because often when I get bored, like during quarantine, I switch what I’m doing. I don’t think I let myself get bored for more than 5 mins. But if I start taking out blocks of time to participate actively in boredom, it could help me with something. You’re right, it could boost creativity. I notice when I do boring tasks like sorting stuff, it feels meditative and stimulates creativity. Very interesting stuff.

Glad you enjoyed this! Honestly I think doing these practices is a good start! But I just finished reading Digital Minimalism, and I think a more productive way might be to pick up a 'high quality leisure' activity, like drawing, or building legos.

You eventually said exactly what I was thinking. "Allowing ourselves 30 minutes a day to do absolutely nothing", I think works better for me than trying to find boring things to do. I admire your commitment and patience in making yourself do those boring things. Would be a challenge for me. Particularly the picking the beans thing. 😫 I would go absolutely crazy.

Hi! I don't understand the difference between the 2nd and 3rd experiments. The second experiment = "doing nothing" and the third one = "doing nothing" + "thinking about your work"? 🤔

As a person who lacks social skill i experienced that 2nd type of boredom all the time because I don't have any friends at school and at work.
    I really hate it.
The best type of boredom for me is watching something's moving.
Sitting at the beach watching the waves, watching cars on the road from somewhere comfy, watching cats playing and doing their shenanigans etc. Ok the last one is not boring at all but you get it.
The best boring activity is when i can observe things.
