Did I see some new tools in your workshop? At first, I was wondering why you would make your own clamps. About midway through, I'm def putting these on my winter project list. The look great!
+Ludwig Barnes Sorry, I wasn't sure if it made it in there or not. My next video will definitely have the X-Carve in the spotlight, and it's a good one. Possibly my favorite video so far.
Great video, but you can you tell me why the holes for the thread need to be elongated like that. As you can probably tell I've never used these so have no clue. Thanks
mcorrade the kits cost as much as just buying the clamps. Check out rockler it even harbor freight. This is a cool build that was fun to watch and he did a good job. But if you need clamps it's just as easy to buy them already made.
Dustin, If I don't want to use plywood for clamps what would be the best wood? I don't want it so soft that the project mars the clamps yet I also don't want the clamps marring the project. Also, you probably have answered this a million times, what it the paste you rub on your projects?
+Kenneth Johnson I've answered the finish question so many times I made a video about it and post a link to that video in the description anytime I use it in a project video. As far as wood goes, there is no perfect solution. If you're concerned about damaging your project, use soft would cauls or sacrificial pieces in between clamps. You'll want the clamps to be as strong as possible so I would recommend any straight grain hardwood.
Absolutely beautiful clamps Dustin, thanks for sharing. Did you have any issues with jointing the Baltic Birch plywood? Did it leave any marks on the blades?
+Alex Howard You're the second person to bring that up. It left no marks on the blades and they're just as sharp as ever. In my limited research, it looks like you don't have to worry about carbide blades and plywood. Thanks!
Just an idea, but as long as you are laminating, why not cut the slots for the threaded rod with your table saw before you glue up? Drilling angled holes and all that chiseling is really only necessary in solid stock. Slots will be square ended and will not taper in to the nut, but I don't see any disadvantage in that.
These threaded rods are half reverse threads. If you just used standard rod, you wouldnt be able to tighten them. There are ways to do it though.. Check out I Build It on youtube, John built some without using a kit.
does the glue in the plywood not chip your planer and jointer blades? Unless you have the spiral inserts most the time straight high speed steel bladeswill chip when plywood is passed on its edge. Oh yeah good looking clamps with that plywood like that they will never give.
Jeremy Miller I've heard rumors about that but let's be realistic. Show me a glue that is harder than carbide. I've thickness planed plywood before and never seen any indication of dulling, let alone chipping. I haven't rotated the cutters on my machine since this video and it's still making beautiful cuts. Thanks!
zlaten zlate you can do this with a hand saw and a drill with a guide block, and honestly with a knife instead of chisels. To be completely honest, you don’t even need a guide block, just a hand held drill, the holes don’t need exact precision.
If you're coming to this video just now, there is an excellent reason to purchase a kit over buying a ready-made clamp. See these videos: "First improvements ever to this 122 year old tool" by Taylor Toolworks And: "Must see way to Modify woodworking clamps!" by Stumpy Nubs You can use some of the techniques Dustin uses in this excellent video as well as those Mike Taylor uses in his.
killertoast no. Also don’t use the tools I used, use whatever tools you have. If you’re trying to making your own clamps I’m guessing you have a few tools already.

Nice project Dustin and a pair of handy, good looking clamps :)
Fantastic as usual! They look very useful.
Those are the prettiest clamps that I have ever seen!
Thats actually a lot more work than i expected. Great result!
Very nice! I intend to make a pair just like these, thanks for posting. Mike from UK
That was fun to watch. Very good presentation!
I've watched literally hours of your videos. this is the only one that I've seen a plan while you were working.
good job as usual.
Yeah I had to simplify the plans that came with the clamp hardware. Thanks for watching!
That was awesome. More complex than I expected
Awesome video, Dustin! These are on my to-do list now...
+SimpleCove They're on my to-do list too... albeit very far down the list. :-)
@David Shaper Here's a huge collection of woodworking plans: WoodSun. xyz
very nice edit!!
What angle did you tilt the drill press table to when drilling the secondary holes?
Good and very useful project with an excellent video format.
Did I see some new tools in your workshop?
At first, I was wondering why you would make your own clamps. About midway through, I'm def putting these on my winter project list.
The look great!
+Ludwig Barnes Maybe, what did you see? Thanks for watching!
+Dustin Penner A Jointer and Band saw.
Those are two items I hope to get for my work shop next year.
+Ludwig Barnes No i've had the jointer and bandsaw for a while. I thought maybe you spotted an X-Carve in the background.
+Dustin Penner Watched it a 3rd time and on my Mac. Still missed it. Looking forward to you making good use of it!
+Ludwig Barnes Sorry, I wasn't sure if it made it in there or not. My next video will definitely have the X-Carve in the spotlight, and it's a good one. Possibly my favorite video so far.
Simply outstanding👍👍👍👍👍
Lol damn straight Deez nuts. Oil Bofa Deez nuts! that was awesome Dustin! Clamps turned out great to.
Very good!!! Congratulations!!!
Left hand all thread rods and cross dowels are available in bulk. A motivated person could make a lot of those clamps.
Destitute step one: find motivated person.
Really nice clamps, Dustin.
Nice looking clamps!
They are beautiful, GOTO TO-DO-LIST. Cheers!
Thanks!
What did you finish them with?
This is cool friend!
The clamps look very nice :O)
Hello Dustin! It´s a very nice Work!
Excellent work ! 👍
Nice build, I love my Rockler clamp
Great work. Thanks for video!
If that's what it'll take, I'm good with paying $11 at Harbor Freight.
Cool, thinking about the clamp lately.
Turned out nice bro! 👍🏼
+Nick Henderson Thanks!
Save the glue ups and purchase square staircase oak balustrades or spindles whichever you know them buy.
Nice build!
Hi dustin, cool clamps! I wondered for a while how these type clamps are made.
Thank you!
Looks like the holes are reamed open at about 15 degrees on either side of the primary shaft opening. Is that about right?
Saw the teaser on IG. These look awesome!
+Michael Lawing I do my best to keep my Instagram follows in the loop! Thanks for watching.
สวยงามมากครับ สุดยอด😄
Sorry I am late to the party. Nice build and video, as always!
That was an awesome video!
Very nice project.
terrific, as usual
Very nice indeed. But for a person with just a couple of regular hand tools it's probably easier & cheaper to just buy the clamps...
🙂👍🇨🇦
What is that additional top you have on your drill press?
very nice job sir - an usefull pieces in many situations
Thanks!
Very very good!
Beautiful and useful
so clever dude! 😊
Rock Maple flooring strips make good clamp material
Sweet..classic design too
Thanks!
Awesome!
It must be lovely to have every tool in the world. In Europe we buck up & use what we have. You are a very spoilt man
@@richjones5432 what a cunty comment.
Get a life
Very nice!
brilliant vid. Reminds me of Vision On....
Great video, but you can you tell me why the holes for the thread need to be elongated like that. As you can probably tell I've never used these so have no clue. Thanks
Neil Mair thanks. The two pieces of the clamps are never parallel to each other. The elongated holes allow it to rack and twist without binding.
Very Impressive!
Those are great! Is that hardware in a kit? If so where did you get them?
Excellent... Great job...
Cheers...
Where is the link to the hardware kit
You had me at "Deez nuts." Subscribed!
pretty cool !
this is great! Unfortunately I can't find the kits anywhere. There currently unavailable on Amazon
mcorrade the kits cost as much as just buying the clamps. Check out rockler it even harbor freight. This is a cool build that was fun to watch and he did a good job. But if you need clamps it's just as easy to buy them already made.
Do you have anything on the rack you used to glue your lamination when you did all 4 pieces at once? why all the screws?
Alan H yes. An entire video.
how much did the clamp kit cost?
Really nice!

Best dyi clamp I've seen yet. Where did u get hardwhear
+Scott Jones Thanks! All details are in the video description.
What kind of wax/oil do you commonly use as a finish on the things you make?
ua-cam.com/video/5abtwsk3T6Q/v-deo.html
+Dustin Penner Sweet, thanks for the really fast reply :)
what type of drill press is in the video?
hm.. i was always afraid to use the planer with plywood, in this direction. it does not dull the blades?
Attila Szabo carbide vs adhesive. Mine seem fine.
Dustin Penner great work! just wondering how that planner performs and are you happy with it?
Absolutely beautiful clamps Dustin, thanks for sharing. Did you have any issues with jointing the Baltic Birch plywood? Did it leave any marks on the blades?

1:47 now to make this clamp glue these woods using these clamps.. I dont have clamps man Hahaha
Great project sadly the kits aren't available in Australia
+Bernie Stefan-Rasmus Ahh that's too bad. I'm sure if you do some digging you could track a kit down. Lots of them out there.

+bomaite1 Yeah that's a good idea. Thanks!
Love the Brain It On theme ;)
Nice clamps but how many hours did it take to make them?.....and would you say they would be better than just using any other clamp.
+arfonia I'd say they function 27% better than store bought.
dustin nice work .
Look at all the advanced tools I need to make a basic tool... Especially clamps to make clamps
Vaney Rio yea... using tools to make other tools... unheard of.
Dustin Penner Sorry if it came out as an offensive comment, did not mean to. I would definitely kill for a shop like that.
These can also be made just using hand tools just as they were a century ago.
Really cool videos Dustin, but it would be better if you explain what doing and tips, thanks.
Where did you buy the hardware for the clamps?
david g all details can be found in the description.
Sold out 😩
Amazing, thank you.
just perfect thank u
On what did you put beeswax and oil?
I believe it was deez nuts.
+Dustin Penner hilarious
Nice work. But some of us don't have all those tools handy.
A drill and a tablessaw?
Is there anything special about that kit from Jorganson? Could one just use all-thread and aluminum rod for the inserts?
These threaded rods are half reverse threads. If you just used standard rod, you wouldnt be able to tighten them. There are ways to do it though.. Check out I Build It on youtube, John built some without using a kit.

Lol make it :)
Brother i will need whole wood working factory tools for this project
And trained help........lol

Sweet! You can never have enough clamps.
Nice clamps.
Thanks!
Nice one!
Bel viedeo, bravo !!
good work
Thanks very much!
Love This Video
Excelente !!!!
You go so fast , you should make them to sell !😂😂😂
Number of tools used that no regular home owner owns: 9000
killertoast no. Also don’t use the tools I used, use whatever tools you have. If you’re trying to making your own clamps I’m guessing you have a few tools already.
Awesome but what if you dont have any wood working machines to build it in the first place?
C815richard they you probably don't need woodworking clamps. Or you could buy some.
bravo !!
Do you always wax your nuts? Lol. Thank you for sharing. Awesome vids. Subbed.
+Bobby93636 I never miss a chance!! Thanks for the support!
is that beeswax in the end or lacquer? of some sort
99% of the time the details are in the video description.
Nice
