    I"m 68 and my knowledge of gardening equals the square root of JS ☺️. I just moved into a retirement flat. Outside of which lives a lovely rose bush. Still blooming but too much growth for a good perfect ten. I was encouraged to garden from about 9 or 10 and can proudly admit to successfully killing everything I grew - it never sparked an interest. But. Having stumbled upon this ( as you do ) I reckon I should attempt at pruning and cutting back. as the months progress.
    I'm so thankful you made it all so simple 🍻. Subscribed with thanks.

      Thanks Stephen. That’s brilliant to hear. Gardening is a split of 50% knowledge and 50% hands on experience. So sounds like you’re already increasing your chances of success by getting stuck in. If you prune your roses next winter you’ll be amazed by the floriferous results!! Glad to have you as a Ninja subscriber. Happy Gardening. Lee

    Wow! So glad I found you. I really don't have a green thumb, but I do have roses. My sister passed away about two years ago. Prior to that, I planted yellow roses {Her favorite}, they did okay. Since she has passed away they have flourished {is it her?, I think so}. Well, they are starting to get a bit out of shape and I needed to know what to do. Thanks to you I now know what I need to know.

    Useful video! I think one of the biggest lessons for beginners is don't be afraid to prune. As a beginner I'm always worried that cutting right back and removing ALL the leaves from a rose in winter will kill it. But they can take it and, so long as they're not diseased, will grow back better!

      Hi Katia. I wouldn’t seal a rose pruning cut. The chance of it getting damp is too high in my experience. If you prune in winter on a dry day the cuts deal themselves quickly and callous. I only seat grafts never pruning cuts. Hope that helps! 🥷🌿🤘

    Excellent! Answered almost every question I had without me even asking! My 7 yr old climber 'Madame Alfred Carrière' was cut to a six inch stump by next door fence installer! It is producing new shoots though. I hope it survives, it was quite vigorous and gorgeous scent. I am wondering if you ever respond to questions about specific plants? to hear I’ve been helpful. what a shame that it’s been sliced to a stump. They do recover really well. A few years and it will be back to normal. @@Gardenninja Omg! not sure you should be reading my mind! Briefly: Pieris Japonica, (Lily of the Valley bush) 15+ yrs old, never pruned, last year smothered in flowers (which still remain in their dried-up state), this year hardly any new blooms except for a few sprigs on which looks like new foliage. All leaves remain green. Is it dead/dying or did it over do it last year? Thanks in advance. (Well, you did offer!)

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  5 років тому

      Hey. Sounds like it’s having a bit of fatigue. Especially if it’s 15 years old and flowered profusely before. Peris are ericaceous which means they like acidic soil. It’s through this acidity that they can take up certain key nutrients. So my first step would be to mulch it with ericaceous compost to help it uptake the nutrients it needs. Then see how it goes. They are super slow growing so only need light pruning. Hard pruning doesn’t really do much for his species. Hope that helps and let me know how you get on! Lee

      +Garden Ninja Ltd Do the same rules apply for roses grown in pots?

    • @Gardenninja
      @Gardenninja  5 років тому +1

      Hi @@sarahmaurice3930 Yes they do. The only difference is you will need to feed pot grown roses more as they have no other way to get their nutrients compared to ground grown roses. You may also want to be a bit gentler on the pruning side as sometimes pot grown roses are not as vigorous. However, if you prune to an outward facing bud, even if you take a bit too much off, it is not the end of the world. Roses are really tough and resilient. Hope that helps!
