Omaha Beach on D-Day - what happened? The story in 10 minutes

  • What happened on Omaha Beach on D-Day, june 6, 1944? I have visited the place several times and made a lot of photo's: check them out at www.omaha-beach... .
I also shot some video here and there with my phone camera as I was walking around looking for the key points to photograph, and now have used these images to tell the story of Omaha as I see it - in 10 minutes. Contains footage of some of the key points like Fox Red, Dog Green, Easy red, Widerstandsnest 60, 62 and 72. Phone camera quality so expect no miracles but the story is worth telling. Lest We Forget!
Music is by Charles Ives, a great American composer of the early 20th century. For further reading I'd suggest the excellent books by Cornelias Ryan - "The Longest Day" and Joseph Balkoski - "Omaha Beach".
Omaha Beach is well worth a visit. It "breaths" history and at times has a near magical atmoshere surrounding it. Also make sure to visit the US Cemetery on top of the bluffs and pay respect to the thousands that lay there so we may live in freedom.
More footage I shot earlier (also at Pointe Du Hoc and British sectors) is in an older youtube movie from 2009: • A trip to the Normandy...

This has got to be one of the most detailed and educational videos in 10mins about D-Day. You provided a point of view no one else has covered like that before. Like you literally linked all the sectors where you could understand how the Omaha beach head as a whole was attacked by the Allies. I didn't even realise there were 10 sectors. And how both flanks were most vulnerable to enemy fire, but yet had some of the better forms of natural cover. This is really good.

Just in case anyone is wondering at all about this 'most detailed and educational video' there were other Allies engaged in the D-Day Landings. It is fairly insulting to suggest only the USA were present at Omaha Beach and Normandy in general.

@@alstokesveteranfilmmaker913 you have a point there. I just find this guy's video to be more detailed regarding the strategy as a whole; of how they approached the Omaha beach head.

@@alstokesveteranfilmmaker913 I'm not too aware or sure of who else at Omaha were present besides the Americans, if there were other non-American units I'm keen to know.

@@TheMainMayn : Quite right and the use of the British designed & built Mulberry Harbour, whose landing craft were they using to get to the beach - my moan in general being the Americans as usual asserting they did it all by themselves when the whole of D-Day was a combined operation of Canada, Britain and the USA plus assistance of the French Resistance and the combined air forces bombing the crap out German defences - although who was it launched their Shermans too early and which air force failed to bomb the beaches to make fox hole defences.
Oh well, there's always the Imperial War Museum in London for the over all view.

@@alstokesveteranfilmmaker913 I'm not American but Dutch and in no way I want to diminish the Commonwealth contribution to Overlord. Though Omaha was mostly an American sector some heroic actions were performed by British sailors like the coxswains on many of the landing craft and some of the destroyers (three out of 33 destroyers here were British). I did visit the Canadian and British sectors Gold, Juno and Sword also and may be I willmake a video on one of those at some time.

Visited Omaha, Utah, Sainte-Mere Eglise and the Omaha Cemetery in June, Read many books, saw many movies studied numerous reports on D-Day prior to the visit. We had a knowledgeable guide but this video provided a unique insight that was helpful in understanding one of the keys to conquering Omaha's defenses. Thank you!

US Navy Destroyers at Omaha beach disobeying orders went into shallow water where they could have been grounded and took out German positions at the direction of land forces which allowed the land forces to move inland also saving the day !After Generals were going to call off further landing at Omaha!! Must have missed that point!

If possible take a visit not during the main holiday season. Otherwise on a sunny day you met thousands of people and the main cemetry - well known from Saving private Ryan - is overcrowded with people, thousands. Nevertheless very impressive, despite without shelling.

What's MG fire? What's WN 60 and WN 72? Could have done without the ominous trumpet, flute filler music. White lettering was hard to read. Was interesting to learn about Lt. Spalding. I also liked when you showed Fox Red section of beach and labeled it as such. It's nice to know what you're actually looking at when viewing a video. I want to go to Omaha Beach someday and pay my respects to the men who fought and died there. My birthday is June 6th. But not 1944.

On the road from Colleville to st Honorine des pertes juist outside Colleville turn left at a small road - it has a red fire extinguisher - then keep right until you reach a place where you can park near trees., it’s a 150 meters walk towards the coast.

My dad was there the morning of june 6th. He was with the 147th combat engineers, 6th engineers special brigade. I was looking through his WW2 photo album. There's a pic of a pillbox and he wrote a caption "we landed 100 ft from here". I was trying to find that pillbox in this video. My dad passed 4-1-13. Damn do i miss that generation.

    • @siras2

I've been twice. H Hour was scheduled for low tide at 06.30 at which time the exposed beach is approx 300m - when looking at it today it's astonishing to think that anyone could hope to cross that vast expanse unscathed - this was to give Combat Engineers the max amount of time to clear safe lanes through the beach obstacles for the next waves of landing craft to come in. In the ensueing carnage and chaos very few clearance parties were able function properly and the storm tide came in much faster than usual causing losses with the subsequent waves of craft as they struck uncleared obstacles which by now had become submerged.
