I once had a St. Bernard/Great Pyrenees cross. She was easily 6' standing on her hind legs and could basically be ridden into battle. She was an awesome dog and displayed all characteristics shown for both breeds in this video. I never took her for a single walk...she always took me for a drag.

my best friend when we were growing up, her father bred and trained German Shepherds for the RCMP. The family had multiple awards for their quality shepherds. Anyhoo, they were offered one of their dogs when it came up for retirement from the RCMP so they took "Duke" back to live with them.
We lived far out in the country and Duke didn't like sleeping inside so Duke used to sleep on the front stoop, never tied (late 80's in the bush) but could be trusted to never leave the property. One morning, my friend's parents were leaving the house to go to work in the city and they noticed Duke wasn't on the front stoop so they started calling out to him. They could hear grumbles and growls coming from him in the front yard and when they found him, he was standing over a man who was laying on the ground and Duke had him by the throat.
Apparently, the guy had come from the city, looking for a place to break into and decided on their house. He was sneaking around the property when Duke discovered him. Duke tackled him and held him by the throat for HOURS until the parents discovered them out on the front. He told them that every time he tried to move, Duke would tighten his grip on his throat until he stopped, then Duke would relax his grip.
    Duke was a hero.
For years I wanted to name a dog Duke, in honor of their dog. I have had several GSDs over the years and never once named one Duke. Finally in 2015 I rescued (what was supposed to be a purebred GSD) a pup and named him Duke. He had been abused so he was fearful but I could work with that and train him to get past that. As he grew, it became obvious that he wasn't a purebred GSD. He was a pitty-GSD cross breed. He has the blocky, square, muscular face and body of a pitty but has the colour of a saddle-back GSD. The sweetest dog I have ever owned. However, he is about as smart as a bag of hammers. I love him to bits but he doesn't quite live up to the name of "Duke" in the way I had intended. He is still my hero though, in a sweet way. :)

We had a huge, intimidating dog on our farm...a real Heinz 57 mix of the biggest breeds(we joked he was part t rex, too)...my dad got him because he wanted him for deer hunting. Dad was harsh in his training and rarely home(worked with a steel firm building tunnels, bridges, safety rails, theme park infrastructure, etc. )...bonus: dog was gun shy. Dad punished...and punished the poor dog...and the minute dad went out of town for work, mom brought the dog inside. Months of doctoring, loving and warm meals with gravy ensued. Dad came home to find that we had "ruined" a "valuable hunting dog" but, faced with my baby sister crawling all over the dog, he just grumbled and let it go...though he was free with his opinion about what a waste of effort the dog was. Then one summer night, when dad was away again and we were alone, we heard growling...it was the dog, King, who had been sleeping on the porch. Then there was a voice hissing "Git, dog! Git!" The person knew we were there. Robbery clearly wasn't the motive. We were 9 and a half miles from the nearest neighbor...police usually took 45 minutes or an hour or longer to reach us(we had a lot of land that was heavily forested and poachers and fence cutting were what we usually called about)...this was BAD. A sharp bark. A struggle. A yelp...King had been kicked. The growling intensified...a clatter of dropped objects...a scream...some curses...another, longer, louder scream...growls, barking, a struggle, a final scream...then the sound of feet running away. Cops arrived around 9 a.m....hours after it was all over... looked at everything...the evidence on the door...the copious amounts of blood...listened to mom's story. Took a couple of photos. Shrugged. Left. Never caught the guy...not sure they were looking.
Dad never spoke badly of the dog again. King never learned to like guns...or men...or men with guns...but he tolerated men in the family. What he liked...LOVED...was my mom and baby sister. He was good with kids in general, though. A born nanny. A born guard. A born protector. Yes, he was needy and clingy, just like the rescue mutts in Mr. Devaney's videos...and his poops were dinosaur sized...but he was infinitely patient, not easily rattled by anything a kid could do and 100% committed to our safety.
    Thank you, King.

I grew up with a Great Pyrenees named Monster. He was a show puppy reject because he had a big gray patch on his back and cute little silver ears. Sweetest dog in the world, was convinced he was a lapdog, loved having kids crawling all over him.
Heard that dog growl exactly one time in his 14 years. We were out with neighborhood kids and a strange man had started walking up to my sister. Monster literally ripped his leash out of my dad's hand a few houses away and bolted to get between that stranger and my sister growling like crazy. Guy obviously ran because that's a BIG dog, and Monster never growled again after that. Spent that afternoon happily letting kids bombard him with pets and ear wiggles lol.
He'd annoy maintenance men trying to get pets and hugs, and had a weight problem for a while because we didn't know the elderly neighbors loved him and would bring home food for him when they went out lol.

One of the absolute sweetest dogs I've ever known was a German Shepard/American Staffordshire mix my dad had. At the time the next-door neighbor had a son who was pre-school age and had gotten scared by a dog before. This dog loved kids, and when we got the neighbor kid to meet him, he stood perfectly still until the kid started petting him, then he remained frozen except for his tail wagging like crazy. They got to be great friends, and they would snuggle with the kid using the dog as a pillow.

Back in high school, I went over to a friend’s place to work on a group project. I got to met her Great Dane (Tyson), that her dad got as a guard dog because it was the biggest so clearly the best to guard their house. She was maybe 4’10 on a good day, so she showed me this little trick she would do with him. She sat down, patted her lap and shouted “oh Ty Ty” and I kid you not this dog stood over her lap with his chest and stomach on her lap and looked at her for some pets. He wanted nothing more than to be a lap dog and it was adorable. He sat with us in her living room like “oooh can I help please, I’m real smart I can help”. If one of us didn’t scratch him he’d start whine. I love them so much, they’re the gentle giant of dog breeds.

Today, one of them was completely terrified of a cup. Other things they are scared of include: paper, boxes, plastic bags, cats, shadows, and basically anything they deem is suspicious in anyway possible which is a lot. We put a tent up in the backyard and the kids were in it. Let the weim out and he slowly went up to the tent (because it was suspicious). As soon as one of the kids made a noise, he tucked butt and ran to hide behind me until we showed him it was one of his kids in there.

My friends had a papillon that would be best described as a bundle of nerves in a fur coat. He had a collection of weird quirks that made his daily care an adventure (his requirements for his food and water were apparently very exacting). He would fart himself awake and then bark furiously at his own ass before trying to run and hide from it. His IQ was on par with a tin of shoe polish, he thought baby carrots were the best treats ever, and he once carefully opened a one-pound box of chocolate fudge so neatly you'd think a person did it, then proceeded to eat the fudge with zero negative health effects whatsoever. We all miss that baffling little idiot.

As someone who has been around Staffs for 30 years, I've never trusted them completely around other dogs and always kept them controlled when out. Me after seeing the "Rescues" bit: For people with rescues that have anxiety when you leave, teach them hand signs for when you're leaving. One hand sign for "walkies"/"You're coming with me" and one for "You're staying here and I'm leaving." Make sure to make it fairly structured so they notice the hand sign and maybe also make the animal sit as you leave, making it as ceremonious as you can. They will eventually learn that it actually means "You're staying here and I'm leaving - but I'll be back, OK?" and their anxiety will often completely go away after it takes. Just a tip from a former owner of multiple rescues.

I've had nearly every single one of these breeds as a patient, and I gotta say, besides the pitbulls cuz they're my fave, Odin the Irish Wolfhound was my boyyyy! He loved his daddy, he would get separation anxiety when his dad left, but while his dad and little brother were there, you couldn't get near them. He was stupid protective of them. Play with and pet Odin all you want, just don't go near his dad and brother.
He came in once because he got in a fight with his canine brother and his brother tore up his foot pretty bad. His dad came drop him off so we could clean and repair it... he cried while his dad left. I took him to the xray room, where we had a big couch, and he laid on my lap and howled the songs of our Irish ancestors together. He was such a good boy! If he came in and my doctor/nurse team wasn't on his schedule, I'd make another nurse switch appointments with me so I could be with Odin. I loved that big baby. I'm not a vet nurse anymore and I really miss all the patients I got close to. Never a dull day at a 13 doctor full service vet hospital!

A friend's Border Collie mix got so incredibly bored, that she made herself a ball playing machine:
She carried the tennis ball up a tilted garden wall, put it at the top point and let it roll down, while she ran to the lowest point to catch it. She did this over and over again for hours. After a while my friend got her a bunch of large rabbits (bred for meat), so she had something to herd. None of them ever escaped the garden. And she snacked on their dropping so much, that my friend started calling them "her chocolate raisins".
Her other half is a Harzer Fuchs (literally "Harz mountain fox"), i.e. an ancient German herding breed. Don't worry if you've never heard of them, they're almost extinct. They have about the same intelligence level as ordinary German shepherds, so a Border Collie/Harzer Fuchs mix is scary smart. She could probably do my taxes.

My border collie does the same you are telling but also does it with pinecones while hiking big mountains. The fun ends when she encounters goats next to cliffs and chase them to the bottom or top of the mountain. Then comes back and keeps playing with the pinecones.

Both chocolate and raisins are poisonous for dogs, good that it was just 💩😅

I can see a German Shepherd working for either the IRS, or H n R Block. Because they'll either audit you, or protect you fiercely from an audit...and thus be well worth the usual H n R Block fees....in dog biscuits, that is...and come to work well-dressed. 😅

@@a.katherinesuetterlin3028 That's a great new video idea for this channel: Typical jobs for each breed.
The beagle would obviously be the food inspector. The chihuahua is involved in meth cooking. The dachshund a bouncer. The malinois a martial arts specialist. The hovawart Homeland Security. The corgi a go-go dancer... Endless possibilities!

The smaller the dog, the less room they have to dissipate the rage, so it all becomes concentrated.

I had a Irish wolf hound as a babysitter when I was little. We'd play in the backyard and the dog would keep us kids in the yard. Also, if we were outside, adults had to approach from the house. The dog was very protective of her pups ( us kids)
