  • The threat of West Germany’s entry into NATO in 1955 caused the USSR to retaliate by forming the Warsaw Pact or ‘Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.’

      James Barbour You're almost 100% right. Why almost? Because Poland and Hungary were always friends!
      Polak, Węgier, dwa bratanki, i do szabli, i do szklanki!
      Lengyel, Magyar - két jó barát, együtt harcol, s issza borát!
      Pole and Hungarian - two brothers, good for saber and for glass!

      The main purpose of the Warsaw Pact is to separate Western Europe from Central and Eastern Europe.
      After World War II, Western Europe was in great need of manpower (especially West Germany). But because of the Iron curtain, Western Europe was unable to make up for its losses with "white people" from Central and Eastern Europe. It was necessary to compensate losses by Arabs and Africans (non-European people). For 50 years, this has caused irreparable damage to the entire Western civilization.
      Due to the weakening of Europe, the Russians were able to destroy the Western colonial world order. For which the whole world is grateful.
      P.S. The Russians did not want the destruction of Western civilization. Just to punish.

    Couple notes, the Warsaw Pact was originally Czechoslovakia's Idea where they first approached only East Germany and Poland, and it then escalated to the entire eastern bloc. Second, East Germany, unlike Romania and Albania, did not refuse to invade Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring, but were told to stand down by the Soviets before the plan commenced. This was done to prevent any extra unrest related to the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in the Second World War.
    Edit: Also, Mongolia had observer status in the Warsaw Pact. A sort of "half-member" if you will.

    My grandparents remember this alliance when it first formed . They grew up in Poland . The Soviet Union was one of the most hypocritical countries . They constantly talked about how evil imperialism was yet they were the biggest imperialists. They ran the countries like colonies . There were food riots in Poland because the Soviets stole all the food and sent it to Moscow during the Olympics . They also had numerous military bases in these countries . Anytime someone rebelled they brutally invaded it suppressing uprisings in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary . Yugoslavia who was another communist country saw this and refused to be part of the pact . The Soviets were so brutal that even the communist government in Hungary said they went to far when they brutally put down the uprising in Budapest . Ironically the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact to make their satellite states closer to them but it only drove them further apart and actually strengthened the relationship between Poland , Hungary and Czechoslovakia for their United hate of the USSR.

      @strictlyunreal 5 років тому +45

      TheProfessional That is a lie! The Soviet Union didn't run the countries like colonies. If anything, it helped those countries by effectively subsidizing their economies through Comecon. That is actually one of the reasons the Soviet economy collapsed.
      About military bases: did the US have any bases in the territory of their NATO allies? Do they still have? Doesn't Poland have one or are asking for one right now? Double standards much?

    I was born in Czechia after the democratic revolution of 1989, and even after the USSR fell, but just like most of other Czechs, I still feel paranoia and hatred when it comes to Russia. That's just how enraging stories told by my family, friends, and basically this whole era's history are. Forunatly, my country has recovered from the Russian occupation and now has the highest living standarts in all of former Eastern Block excluding half of Germany.
