Even though I have had my CDL for 2 months, I ordered your book. I still have a lot to learn. I drive a roof truss delivery flatbed trailer with rollers to slide them off where the customer wants them. Your "short trailer backing" sold me! Although my tandems don't slide, they are 15 feet in front of my rear bumper! That large amount of swing has already caused a minor accident for me. Thanks for your passing of knowledge, Bill
Thank you Sir. I just got hired on as a local delivery driver and sometimes I take the small trailer I think it's a 38 footer so the turns are quicker but I love driving a tractor trailer. I love backing and I hope to be good like all you tractor trailer drivers some day. This has given me a lot of good tips. Every time I drive I get better. I have always been a hands on guy. This is great. Thanks !
Hey Jimmy I just want to say thanks. I went to go do my road test for my truck license just last Friday and I got 99% on my test. Your videos and book were very informative. Thanks again brother. Keep up the good work. It's much appreciated.
Last day before testing, I have been struggling with my 90° alley dock. The top down perspective from playing with toy trucks has helped tremendously and this video helps as well. I am sinking them in today when just yesterday I thought I never would
This video was just what I needed. Transport and I spent a lot of time working on backing but now that I'm on my own without the help of trainers I still run into problems Thank You Jimmy I'm looking at this video up and down
Sir what you are doing is excellent for someone like me who wants to better myself and make a living driving rig. I really appreciate the knowledge and the time you took to help people like myself. A lot of drivers act like they never were newbies, and tend to not want to help people like me.
Hey Jimmy, As an instructor in the Industry I sometimes struggle to explain this to students who really need to understand the principles of backing.... I like your explanation it works well... As I was watching the video I ran my own procedures through my head and lo and behold it's the same............Thanks
This was the best way to learn how to back up a trailer. I liked the way you did the drawings and showed the angles. I've gone thru alot of videos and this by far was the most informative. Thanks Jimmy.
These videos seem to be the best on the subject of backing on UA-cam. I now see where I was making mistakes and hopefully they will help me when I do the road test next week. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for these easy to understand instructions. I just started learning how to shag drive at a distribution center that spreads to about 450 acres of land. I never have driven a tractor trailer in my life and only knew how to shift manually on a motorcycle. The shifting was easy to grasp but backing up a trailer was my biggest challenge and these videos have advanced my knowledge and skills in backing up in addition to the training I'm currently receiving. Great work!
When I went to trucking school years ago, my buddy and I bought a couple toy trucks just like this and practiced. Helped a lot. Also, when class was out, we walked down to the truck stop and just hung out watching guys back up and as we talked to each other about what the driver was doing or about to do we really were able to picture this better.
Jimmy, I really appreciate these videos. I am sitting here waiting to do my Phase 2 testing with Roehl and I am rough with my backing. When I was on the road with my trainer and I had to back I was rough then, however my trainer guided me but when I get out on my own and first off during this testing I have to do it myself. Where my problem comes in at is not over turning the steering wheel and knowing the orientation of how the tractor and trailer turns.
I have a CDL-B. Went to get my CDL-A couple of days ago. Passed the Pre Trip, Straight Line Backing and the Off Set Backing. Examiner threw me a curve on my final exercise, the Alley Dock Backing. (90 Degree) Never thought to practice this exercise. Well, you know what happened. I bombed................Watched several videos including yours. Very helpful indeed. Have been practicing and have found that you almost need to have the back of the trailer very near the space you are backing into just before turning the trailer to the 90 degrees. Thanks for the help. I go test end of July.
Thanks man this really helped! I'm currently in school trying to do this backing and we have such a big class that all the instructors do is yell. I always get the rear end in and then jackknifed and now I see where I was going wrong.. I wasn't turning back to the left! Thanks for your time!
continued: I can grasp it to a point but when I get behind the wheel it all goes south... These videos have explained it more in detail than my one day of backing in training to get my CDL. So thank you
I passed my CDL recently on my own (no truck driving school) and finally found a company that hire's the newest of the new beginners like me. I'm getting more and more comfortable all the time all that's left is backing, I dunno how I passed my cdl because I cannot back at all. Your video helps alot
can't back up. passed my PTI with no problem. Straight backing is giving me the blues. I will keep watching your video. I retest on Thursday. It is pretty helpful
I watched this video a few times before, and every time I come back to it, I find something new, this video is short, but rich and compressed with informations, good job man you are the Best. Thanks So so much.
im am in driving school now and i'm having the worst time w/ this maneuver. mostly w/ the angels. i go back to class tomorrow and ill look for the things you showed on here and see if i can work on it. ur explanation clears up a lot of confusion. thank u.
THANK YOU. Have been looking for help. Can't even back my lawn mower trailer. This is the first video I found that actually includes the steering wheel(steering tires) movements. So many videos showing me the semi from the outside as it backs up. I needed to see the steering and the explanation of where to point the wheels to make it go where I want it. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.. Sunday I am hooking my trailer up and practicing. A semi may be a bit..big difference from a 8 foot lawn mower trailer. But I am hoping simular enough. Maybe I can finally figure it out.
Thank you, Jimmy! I am currently in school to get my CDL - my instructor is a wonderful guy, but didn't explain things with much depth. I really appreciate the detail that you use - the explanations, the diagrams, and even the toy tractor trailer make everything so much more understandable. I ordered your book, and am very much looking forward to reading it.
+stratman70528 yeah my teacher is the same way he teach you a few times then you have to get it on your own, and then him and other will sit back and talk about you when u in the truck saying she not getting it.. and wont help.. and i take my test Wednesday and if i dont got past this 90s part i cant take real firday.. tennessee trucking school. isn't a good school like everyone say it is.. the teachers who teach you on the 3 week in the yard who shows you how to do the 90s will not help you after the third day.. he will tell you hes not helping.. i hate i went to this school.. if i dont pass im quitting because im not staying a whole another week to not getting any help.. giving away free money that i dont even made..
Great Video. Thanks. My trainer always told us to look at the back of your trailer, and if it goes to the left to much turn your steering wheel to the left, of course check in mirrors, and if it goes to the right to much, turn your steering wheel to the right. Turn your steering wheel in the direction the back of your trailer is going and the back of your trailer will start going in the other direction, go slow and be patient.
i'll be driving an 18 wheeler for the first time on thursday. my daily driver is a mazda protege so its going to be quite a difference for me :) cant wait!
Great video! I had checked out quite a few youtube videos before this, but none of those explained the concept of "following the trailer" as well as this one, if any! Thanks!!
And Why Wouldn't it...... When teaching principles that I need a student to understand I use my 35 years over the road to get them to understand what I am getting at...So using your book will help me greatly...And thank you.....
Jim, I liked your book. One suggestion I might make is to avoid the confusion associated with turning the wheel left or right (depending on where the driver is holding the wheel), just say turning the wheel clockwise will make the trailer drift left and turning it counterclockwise will make it drift right. Also, your book should include chapters on mountain driving and bad weather driving. How do you tell if the road is slick enough to be dangerous?
great video, great teacher, I like the formula methods, Im an experienced driver, but it always helps to see it like this and keeps your mind sharp and thinking.
Excellent video! Very well done. You have a way of making the complex more simple at first this can be overwhelming until you practice it over and over.
Some good tips for you guys are to use quarter steering wheel turns when backing up, also watch the tires will always tell you where you need to go if you have the luxury of lines on the ground, once you get your trailer parallel with the lines, turn the steering wheel hard to straighten out the tractor, also pull up if you need too, and watch for obstructions so go slow and good luck.
Thanks for making these videos. I am a lady HGV driver. Most of my experience is with 18tonne rigids although I occasionally do tractor/trailor work. I really struggle with the reversing. I have good and bad days. But been a female in a male environment I don't like to ask for help.
I just bought your book I hope it will help me I have been driving semi truck for 6 month I can back up but it takes me longer then normal people I hope this book will teach me new things thanks for the videos they are amazing we can use some more tho thanks again
Very informative and practical. Thanks. Nice video indeed! I'm beginning to get it. Having watched this, I did my first blind-side back-up with one pull up. This helped my brain.
This is a an awesome teaching and is extremely helpful. Can you put up more of the lessons like this and what is this book you are talking about and where can one get it. Thank you
thank you for your videos I was able to follow along well. I am about to take my skills test and unlike many right now I didn't go to an academy just learning from other's experiences.
I am not sure where i picked up this thought, " the drive tires are the trailers steer tires" I tossed it around in my head and was watching your videos thinking in those terms it may help others that may not understand how backing fully works.
colton b Sorry for late reply. Ive never thought of the tractors drive tires as the trailers steer tires but that's a different way to go about it that might help some people. It'd be like thinking of the trailer as a straight truck and using the drive tires to steer it.
+Truck Driver Lilly Great job! Be patient with your new job. It takes quite awhile to get experience in all the situations where you have to maneuver your truck.
well explained even though im a truck driver in Australia. Over here didn't do much reversing in my lessons, when I got the job it was like, you will be alright, you'll figure it out.
When I took my test in NY (many years ago) the only backup I had to do was parallel park. Maybe things have changed or maybe it's different in your state but I would think the school would know what was required there and should have prepared you for it.
I just want to Thank you for your wonderful information !!! I just got my Class A license and got a job as a solo driver, I was having such a hard time to back up the 53" trailer, I have to ask other drivers to back up my truck to the dock, until I find your videos, I watched more than 10 time, now I can back up in large spaces still I am straggling at the truck stop or small loading places, Its the hardest part of my job ...every day before I drive I google the location and see if its enough room for me to able to back up....the company I work for has almost 98% live load .....so I am keep trying over and over ....some truckers being very patient with me and some getting upset as to why its taking me so much time to back up ....some of them even get out of the truck assisting me to back up .....but today I could not even back up if it wasn't for your video ....THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND CURTSY PUTTING THESE VIDEO TOGETHER !!!!
Thats one of the tips that I mention in my book. Another one is, if you're used to thinking about which way you're turn the top of the steering wheel, turn it towards the obstacle that you want to avoid. I've never thought of it this way but its one way of looking at it. Either way, once you've done it for awhile you won't have to think about it as much. You'll find that you're automatically turning it the right way.
Great video! I'm a former student driver... I finally started on skills and on my second lesson I improved on my back up 45* I still sometimes mix the steering....but I wrote in on my hand as I'm backing up... 3 lesson I now most of my attempts get it nearly perfect but I stii
I avoid the whole 'which way to turn the wheel to move the trailer right or left' by mounting my left mirror on the right side and the right mirror on the left side. Now as I look to the right, I see the left and when I look to the left I see the right. Then I put my left hand on the right side of the wheel and my right hand on the left side so when I turn left it moves right. Then I keep my fingers crossed, eyes closed, and ears open listening for the crunch. DONE, parked. (nice video series!)
Thanks Jim, back video and how you explain is very good. However, I have a questions in regards to timing of of the 90 degree backing. First turning the wheel all the way to the right and then back to left and back to right when backing, is there certain tip on the timing when switching from right to left, etc? Or is all different which depends on your set. Thanks in advance.
not saying im an expert or anything, but youll eventually learn when to turn the wheel on the fly. dont be afraid to do a pull up or five and remember there is no wrong way to back a trailer as long as you dont hit anything. all that stuff comes with practice. the real challenge comes when you work for a company like i do that puts you in multiple sized trailers and tractors with multiple axles.
a little tip my instructor gave me was: if you are reversing and want to straighten out, you got to steer towards the mirror in which you can see your trailer.
Thanks a lot jimmy cox. Can you create a video for the Tipper Truck and Quad dog to reverse or Jack knife? If you can, It would be a lot appreciated. Thanks again.
I have problem in backing , maybe it is hard for me ,because I don't have more experience in driving I got my drive licenses 7 months ago, I know how to move steer , but when I drive Iam confusing. I don't know should I do 😞?
ok knew i was in the wrong spot.... Well Jimmy I got your book at smashwords though. Now the question is can I use your book as a training manual of sorts.... Some of my students are visual learners....and I think this would help them a lot....I am not talking about handing your book over to them. I would actually purchase the hard copy to do that... Thanks in advance Rory Burgess
I passed every steps on in order to upgrade my driver license and the only thing I failed to do is the Alley dock and my instructor said I can't do it coz I do not have a farm background and above all he uses this term :" insanity" and I don't know what to do . Is everyone has the same problem out there new truckers ?
@RandomConcepts Thanks for the nice comment. I try to show some of the reasons tractors and trailers react in different situations but I hope it doesn't make it seem harder than it is. After some experience you don't think as much about these maneuvers, it becomes second nature. I'm hoping that by understanding why a truck combination reacts the way it does, new drivers will get to that point sooner, where they automatically know where to turn the steering wheel.
Even though I have had my CDL for 2 months, I ordered your book. I still have a lot to learn. whats the formula

You're welcome, I hope the videos help him.
Well done....bought your book...just arrived today from amazon
Its 2019 and this is helping me. I am a student at prime. And I dread my test day on the pad coming up soon. Thanks .
i'll be driving an 18 wheeler for the first time on thursday. my daily driver is a mazda protege so its going to be quite a difference for me :) cant wait!
Well done, pretty good explanation of the complexities of backing a trailer.
Great video! I had checked out quite a few youtube videos before this, but none of those explained the concept of "following the trailer" as well as this one, if any! Thanks!!

The concept of imagining a circle and turning into it is great. Thats something I'll try and remember.
Man ..U the best.. u explain everything to my understanding.. thanx
Thanks for the videos , i am in CDL class A right now, and i like this videos.great job.
great video, great teacher, I like the formula methods, Im an experienced driver, but it always helps to see it like this and keeps your mind sharp and thinking.

Thanks for making these videos. I am a lady HGV driver. Most of my experience is with 18tonne rigids although I occasionally do tractor/trailor work. I really struggle with the reversing. I have good and bad days. But been a female in a male environment I don't like to ask for help.
20 driving increasingly bigger vehicles, six months in big rigs and I'm learning more each day. All tips welcomed. Thank you.
Thanks Angus. Just one pull up on a blind side is very good
This is a an awesome teaching and is extremely helpful. Can you put up more of the lessons like this and what is this book you are talking about and where can one get it.
Thank you
thank you for your videos I was able to follow along well. I am about to take my skills test and unlike many right now I didn't go to an academy just learning from other's experiences.

Thanks jimmy for the refreshing session fixen to start driving again
man i needed this
Great video!!!! Model and diagrams is exactly what i was looking for and glad i found it. Thank you very much for your much needed help.
Good video looking forward to others. I start testing next week.
+singand_behealthy thanks and good luck with the tests
+Truck Driver Lilly How did you do?
+SerenityGamesToo great I passed! I am in training now for my OTR job thanks for asking
+Truck Driver Lilly Great job! Be patient with your new job. It takes quite awhile to get experience in all the situations where you have to maneuver your truck.
Truck Driver Lilly Congratulations! I'll be right behind you in about a month or two.
well explained even though im a truck driver in Australia. Over here didn't do much reversing in my lessons, when I got the job it was like, you will be alright, you'll figure it out.
+Mat Lalaga That happens a lot over here too Mat.
Now this how you demonstrate backing thanks
When I took my test in NY (many years ago) the only backup I had to do was parallel park. Maybe things have changed or maybe it's different in your state but I would think the school would know what was required there and should have prepared you for it.
Great videos, been driving for 3 months, always trying to improve
Do you have any other videos....they compliment your book nicely
Thank you. I am studying for my CDL driving test and worried about backing. This helps a lot!
Thank you very much for taking the tme for making a very helpfull video.bless u sr
I just want to Thank you for your wonderful information !!! I just got my Class A license and got a job as a solo driver, I was having such a hard time to back up the 53" trailer, I have to ask other drivers to back up my truck to the dock, until I find your videos, I watched more than 10 time, now I can back up in large spaces still I am straggling at the truck stop or small loading places, Its the hardest part of my job ...every day before I drive I google the location and see if its enough room for me to able to back up....the company I work for has almost 98% live load .....so I am keep trying over and over ....some truckers being very patient with me and some getting upset as to why its taking me so much time to back up ....some of them even get out of the truck assisting me to back up .....but today I could not even back up if it wasn't for your video ....THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND CURTSY PUTTING THESE VIDEO TOGETHER !!!!

great video. thank you for your experience and years of hard work as a driver.

fantastic video! You just cleared it up a lot for me!
Jimmy thanks for making it easy for new guys like me!
great videos thanks very much, new uk trucker here, is there anything like this for uk trucks?
I learner something today I want to go to the truck test next week thank you guys
Good luck with the test Eliaser
I avoid the whole 'which way to turn the wheel to move the trailer right or left' by mounting my left mirror on the right side and the right mirror on the left side. Now as I look to the right, I see the left and when I look to the left I see the right. Then I put my left hand on the right side of the wheel and my right hand on the left side so when I turn left it moves right. Then I keep my fingers crossed, eyes closed, and ears open listening for the crunch. DONE, parked. (nice video series!)
Awesome write video Jimmy this will help alot of people. :)
Thanks in advance.
not saying im an expert or anything, but youll eventually learn when to turn the wheel on the fly. dont be afraid to do a pull up or five and remember there is no wrong way to back a trailer as long as you dont hit anything. all that stuff comes with practice. the real challenge comes when you work for a company like i do that puts you in multiple sized trailers and tractors with multiple axles.
thanks this video is very informative. I think it'll help me out with my backing problems.
+Michael Balak I hope it helps. Thanks Michael.
a little tip my instructor gave me was: if you are reversing and want to straighten out, you got to steer towards the mirror in which you can see your trailer.
Nice video. I also got your book.

when you say "slight turn" what do you mean - 3:00, 1:00, 4:00, etc?
I have problem in backing , maybe it is hard for me ,because I don't have more experience in driving I got my drive licenses 7 months ago, I know how to move steer , but when I drive Iam confusing. I don't know should I do 😞?
Excellent, Really Great!.. USA1...
Good Luck, and God Bless...
ok knew i was in the wrong spot....
+Rory Burgess I think it'd be a great idea and I'm all for it. I'm glad you think it'd be a good training manual.
wonderful video Im in the process of taking my driving test now...
I really would like you to show how to back a double n.n
Great illustration.
Thanks Joey
Great vid👏🏿
Thank you so much, am good with my settings my problem is how to drive the trailer once I make my angle cut.I this is helpful.
