hey, there! i am a black girl, so here's my thoughts. i think it's perfectly fine for you to wear box braids. just like we need to protect our hair, you need to protect yours too, especially cause it's coily/curly. and you should do what makes you feel good! this is your life so live it for you and no one else! if you want to wear box braids, go for it! just make sure to be respectful (don't start mocking black people for giggles)! hope this helps :)
I agree with the first commenter but also be careful with your scalp I've heard that it could damage if it's too tight maybe try jumbo braids then gradually get smaller
