Chetney telling Dorian he isn't a burden is nice and very wholesome, then snapping on Cyrus and talking to him like he talked to Dorian in episode 8 was hilarious.
I want an animation that is just Laudna sipping a cocktail and playing with pate while all the party chaos goes on in the background and totally goes unnoticed by her.
me too, don't get me wrong the last 2 episodes was very entertaining and intense, props to matt for juggling soooo many story happening at once. Although I feel bad for Laudna scene since all I remember her do in the last 2 episodes was 'she danced with Ratanish' and 'She scared the onlookers' both which are VEEEERRRYYYY short.
The image I have in my head is of Gina Linetti from Brooklyn Nine Nine as she's dancing with headphones in while there's a massive fight happening in the precinct behind her.
When Robbie joined and he was so loveable and fit in so well it never even occured to me that he wasn't going to be a permanent member of the show. He is such a lovely addition and I am legitimately heartbroken that he isn't going to be around each episode. We already miss him
When I first started watching critical role I started on campaign 3 and I thought Robbie was just another member of the crew and then I was heartbroken to find out he was a guest
As a father of a four year old myself, I felt that moment when Robbie said he was walking to the “potty” and the subsequent realization you are taking to adults.
So happy he's just clicked with it and running. EXU it took him a while, but I had the same experience with my first dnd game- little alone with Matt fucking Mercer being another PC
Laura: so your gonna pull it out of her stick it in that guy, pull it out of him then stick it in another guy Robby: yeah I stick it in everyone Travis: he's a bard ;)
@@danielarosindo There’s an animatic of that scene floating around. It’s pretty early into Campain 2. Like second or third episode if I recall. I think it was after the fight with the devil toad. The Nein had been under house arrest in Trostenwald while the circus was investigated and Beau, Jester, and Nott got caught trying to sneak back into the inn.
Matt: she makes unnatural movements Travis: no Travis still not liking any creepy stuff is funny. And I like when he goes southern and says f*ck Santa to get back to Chets voice.
I started to do this as well in my games. I've only ever ran 10 games but you learn pretty quick. If a barbarian wants to smash in a door, I'm not risking a roll coming up short rendering an obvious success becoming a failure. It helps to also state why no roll "oh man, you don't gotta roll for that with your strength....you annihilated that door"
When performing in taverns, for tips or lodging, I have to roll for performance. But when my bard, who had to leave their family very shortly after reuniting with them after 6 years, sang them an "until we meet again", my DM let me have it. Everyone at the table took some emotional damage because I specifically said they played Remember Me from Coco but- I really do love Matt's style of DMing and, regardless of anyone's thoughts on the Matt Mercer effect, I feel like DMs everywhere can learn a lot. Not production, voices, big overarching political corruption, or huge expansive worlds, but just... Idk, I just finished this episode (I'm still catching up sobs) and I'm emotional, but yeah not having them roll for certain things that are a Given for the character or in non-stressful situations (Chetney picking the shackle lock, Dorian's song), but ALSO every time they're in combat or they get really creative, he tells the player(s) "That's awesome!" He does it when Ashton throws the creeper against the bookshelf, he said it when Imogen tried to throw the ball bearings when Chetney was being chased by Vali even though it didn't work, I remember he says it a lot in C2 as well. Rewards the players for being clever and creative and even when their plans don't work assures them that it's still really fukken cool
@@Tobias.Sterling yeah! i've seen an argument that with a decent bonus you can do stuff very reliably in a non-stressful situation. the roll comes in when it's contested, under pressure, or otherwise possibly hampered
@@mchamberlain7408 I let my players almost always roll just to see if they get a nat1 and annoy them with minor inconveniences. "You smashed the door in but it was weaker than expected and it splinters all over the place. Take 1D3 damage." Or something equally "harmless".
I went to a convention this weekend, Katsucon, and I know he probably won’t see this, but shout out to the guy who cosplayed Bertrand and gave me a Werthers. Im eating that Wethers right now! You were awesome.
I hope that at some point they walk into a bar, and suddenly Matt narrates how they hear a song about Bertrand’s Life and he says “If i could ask Dorian to come to the Table”.
I wish so much that Ashton/Talieson and Ferne/Ashley's ploy to make everyone think that Ratanish was Ashton's father had gotten off the ground, that would have been hilarious in the long run...
If they both rolled nat 20s Ratanish would have been at his table rolling some history checks to recall all the faces from his 20 year old one night stands...
---Spoilers--- The fact that I see SO MANY people saying they wish Robbie was staying on as a full cast member just shows how awesome he is. People are so protective of the core CR cast and for so many people to want to have Robbie as a permanent addition really says a lot about how special Dorian was as a character and how fun Robbie was as a player. Can't wait to see him in more CR stuff from here on out
Hear, hear! I'm not happy when people change the formula of something that I love, and I was pretty stressed out by their statement before C3 aired that this season was going to be a bit different, but I was blown away by how quickly I just accepted Robbie here. All credit goes to him, for that. He's an absolute natural at roleplaying and he fit in so well. I'm going to miss him very much.
@@nomaanhaque1704 Seriously, they booted Orion for being a shameless spotlight hog and then Liam and Laura were constantly competing for Main Character status C2. "oh god, Jester's contacting the Wanderer in the middle of someone else's big moment" "Liam is whiny and depressed and has cats and inserts this information in every episode whenever he possibly can."
Half the cast is crying, and the other half is laughing at the wonderfully fun times they've had together. If that's not proof of how loved Robbie and his character have been, both among the cast and the audience, then I don't know what possibly could be. I loved seeing him on the show, and I hope - if he wants it and his schedule permits it - that he'll be back as a permanent cast member.

Robbie is a full time cast member as far as I'm concerned. He's absolutely my favorite "guest" and he's made a home in my heart. They better bring him back, and soon.
I mean as soon as they said they were trying something different with rotating cast members, and then Robbie wasn't part of the intro video, he was a guest. He had a great run, I'm sure Matt has more planned for that story.
@@itssammeh420 he's in it...but edited in a way they can EASILY replace the footage with the next guest they have on the show. 🤷♀️ He was never going to be here for long.

Plus at the end it said he's coming back in his original story probably will Matts Dwarf character and the warlock character that I can't remember the name of. @@lizbethn You know what, it really is! My druid died lvl 5 too, after she rolled a 1 at concentration for entangle (was pretty melee with 3 enemies, dont even ask how that happened, still makes me upset)
Spoilers! Looked through hundreds of comments and haven't seen anyone talking about Dorian saying they made him feel a part of something bigger than himself and he'd never forget them for it. That was definitely also just Robbie saying it to the cast! That was the moment my eyes got wet.
@@michaelkelly4533 yeah, I saw another comment on a previous ep, before this about no spoilers, and thought that was how it was around here (I was newer to CR then) but have since learned that it is my dumb fault for reading comments while I watch...otherwise I won't because I'm watching the next episode by then lol. I am a lot more careful about how much of a comment I read while skimming, and that's thanks to those that corrected my initial mistake. Thanks!
it was rightfully overshadowed by the ending, but I think this episode shows very well why Travis was chosen to be the CEO: while he lets others do what they think is important he identifies future threats and if nobody acts on them he will take matters into his own hands. he talked to Dorian's brother to try to prevent the disaster (of course he couldn't succeed, because the disaster had to happen); he followed the bad creepy lady and got vital information from it; he checked the next room during the fight so they could be aware of the additional threat and healed the guard so he would save them later. he also helps refocus the group when they get distracted. and when somebody else seem to handle a problem, he trusts them to do it and goes for the next one. he's also quite observant, keeps tabs on the crew and steps in when needed. like Ashton was the one who started watching the creepy lady, but then he got sidetracked, so Chetney went and finished the job. plus he has good ideas like using his hightened sense of smell to follow the target or jumping out of the window back in the tower that actually surprised Matt. he also shares the gathered info asap so the team can act on it together. I think this makes him a good leader (not gonna lie, to me it also makes him more attractive than he already is, but that's beside the point): a leader who lets others shine, supports them, trusts them to do their jobs well while he takes care of business that would hurt the team later on. I wish more bosses would be like him.
I figured it was probably just a division of equal time and effort (IIRC him and Taliesin seem to have the least amount of commitments and responsibilities) and because he's the most imposing, no-nonsense character of the bunch, which surely helps when dealing with corporations, lawyers, contracts, etc. But you make excellent arguments for it being more than that!
They are all fantastic players, but he is by far the most observant. Even just little details, like in e2 of this campaign, he had it written down that they stayed the night at Spire by Fire and then had Breakfast at the Weary Way, but for some reason all the others shouted him down that they had for sure stayed over at the Weary Way, and Matt agreed with the group. Except Travis was right!!! But he just lol'd and said he sucked at taking notes. But yeah, def the secretly most observant member of the group.
Honestly as a dm I'd have just let him use the chaos bursts. That felt kinda sucky to rob him of that moment and the npc was both out damaging him and doing additional fire damage.
@@mycenaeangal9312 I imagine the only reason is for level scaling for the future. Tying it to a physical weapon probably means that Ashton is going to be even meaner in the future. Letting him do it with fists might be too overpowered to establish that as the new mechanic early.
@@mycenaeangal9312 the ruling really depends on what the wording was. In 5e things like that will either reference "when you hit with a melee weapon attack" or "when you hit with a melee weapon." The former includes unarmed strikes, as those still are considered to be melee weapon attacks, whereas the latter does not as unarmed strikes are not considered melee weapons. It's incredibly unintuitive but this has been said in Sage Advice multiple times.
I know I am late to this but Robbie really needs to come back as a permanent cast, he is just such a blast to watch and such good chemistry with the group!
@@drag00n365 Could have sworn that quintessential doesn't mean the same thing as essential, but then again I had to look it up, so I'm far from credible enough to say more.

@@endrefasong And? She has had much less experience playing compared with everyone else. I’ve known people who’ve been playing for years and still forget some stuff. It’s not that big of a deal, and it makes for some comedic moments.
@@buzznat20Yup, tbh they all routinely forget things that they are familiar with because that's not where they focus their time and energy, and that's fine. Critical Role would probably be not insignificantly different if it was, perhaps to its detriment. Besides, Matt is there partly to remind them of the things they forget and the whole group seems to enjoy it that way because they're essentially interpreting the game as it exists in his head and acting accordingly.
The phrase that Matt says going into the episode could be on my gravestone: "Thank you all for the fun times, the laughter, and the existential crisis"
I have no idea whether Sam is the most contented happiest confident person in the world or a hallow shell of a person desperately reaching out into the ether for a glimpse of hope
Man, I don't think my heart can handle these recurring guests if they're all going to get so ingratiated and blend in so seamlessly with the core cast only to leave. He had fantastic chemistry with everyone, especially Travis. There are countless moments that brought me to tears, from Dorian kissing Orym's forehead to Fearne with her tooth necklace to the little levitating wooden airship at the very end. Dorian's parting line, "You know what's funny? I've always felt, my entire life, like I was on the outside looking in. And you, you all have made me feel like I am part of something bigger, and I will forever be grateful for that." hit so immensely hard on so many levels. Dorian will always be a part of Bell's Hells and I hope that the 'throuple' (Fearne's definitely the big spoon by the way) get to reunite once again. We love you Robbie! Come back soon!
Yeah, I feel that. I appreciate that longer stays gives guests a chance to have a real effect on the story and intra-party relationship, but man. Ya get attached. Very curious to see if Robbie was unusual in being a recurring-in-the-expanded-universe character, or if future guests are also going to be integrated into ExU either before or after their visits. Getting the impression from recent interviews and announcements that they've really got a whole huge Thing(TM) planned for gradually expanding Exandria and the show(s).
@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll I don't know how to feel about it. I'm excited on one hand, and honestly more power to the cast and crew for wanting to diversify their shows and their cast, bring in new talents and grow the CR world & community, but like all ambitious projects, I worry about the effect it'll have on 'og' content (i.e C3).
@@Xaychedelic he is easily my favorite character from any of the campaigns so far. Last time I teared up like this was when Fjord talks to Essek after their fight with Lucien.

Robbie worked so well with this party. God I love the little almost-romance between Dorian, Fearne and Orym, the worked so well together. Robbie you will be missed
I remembered that he said "it is the hardest word to say", but only because of your comment I recalled that he said it is the hardest word to said instead of goodbye...damn, that was brilliant :O
Oh, man… It was obvious from the moment Dorian's brother showed up, but I still had a little hope that Robbie would become a permanent member. He was just incredible in all aspects. Thanks for all the great moments, and I hope you'll come back in future episodes!
Robbie will probably come back later. I too was hoping he would stick around for a while longer but his departure was always a looming inevitability. Hopefully with he and his brothers situation in a better way.
I imagine the death knell was when he snapped back at Laura’s suggestions regarding the ring heist in the heat of the moment last episode. Edit: Laura was 100% in the right regarding strategy, but Robbie was resistant to logic for some reason. I should also note that I’ve enjoyed Robbie’s performance thus far.
Agreed! Liam is an awesome player. Sure he might take up a lot of spotlight sometimes but it's almost always worth it. Also he's very good at including his co-players whenever he is in the spotlight.
@@Micras08 he definitely hasn’t been taking up a lot of spotlight with this campaign so far, though. I don’t tend to think of it as that anyway, when he does it, because it’s creating plot and making the story very compelling. Taliesin and Sam are also really good at that. I know eventually we’ll dig more into Orym, but unlike Caleb, he didn’t front load the campaign with lore or anything.
The moment Talesin said 'Help' in that little voice after rolling a natural 1 on his death save and true fear of losing yet again an other character, I felt that.

@@joutatheegg briefly lol An action that would have been fine... Had Cad not went down right before it was triggered and had lost a death saving throw. Sadly Sam didn't realize his attack had an area of effect when he said it until after it was set in motion. It's all good Cad makes it to the end!
Spoiler: I honestly forgot that Robbie wasn't a core member of the cast, when Dorian decided to leave I was thinking "wait Robbie needs a new character now'
Same here. I knew he was initially a guest, but given how well he fit and how fun he was as part of the group, I hoped this might change, especially since he was around for so long now, that he seemed essential as a member of this campaign.
I am forever amazed at Matt's ability to tell and progress a story. He knew he had to create an exit for Robbie (who will be sorely missed). The send off was perfectly written to the rest of the story. We forget the build up episodes ago, the introduction of Dorian's brother...it felt so natural to the rest of the story. Nothing here is ever off beat.
The little romance between the three of them is honestly so wholesome and not having Dorian be part of the core group anymore is going to make the group feel so incomplete.

Man I don't see this talked about much, but he really is getting comfortable so quickly with the fighter! I love how acrobatic he plays it with the boots, yet so much more tactical than a monk could be with his positioning and utility. His descriptions of his turns during EXU especially were some of the most creative and interesting melee attack turns I've seen on the show.
Liam to me is arguably one of the best cast members in terms of combat. Always tactful and timely. Ofc his RP is amazing too but.. then again so is the entire casts. It’s so cool coming directly off the hills of C2 to C3 and see him go from a full blown caster to a melee build
@@CazialsChannel I mean, he did spend hundreds of hours with a melee rogue. It is a totally different class of course, but I think the core of "I need a cool way of getting within melee range fast, and preferably not dying in the process" is still there.

I got like a 4 with a negative 3 modifier soooo I wasn’t sitting pretty too. Laughing at the jokes but still being sad. Dammit, gonna miss Dorian and Robbie.
I had his departure spoiled for me on Twitter, so I knew it was coming, and I *still* rolled low on my wisdom save (or charisma?) to not cry when the end came around. Especially since everyone on the cast was mixing their characters' sadness with their own... Ash-o-lee, Laura, and Marisha were all in tears, so how could I not be? 😥
it gave Tali Molly flashbacks and he was not there for it. He was legit getting (rightfully) salty waiting on that healing. Love seeing players that attached and invested in their characters.
Ashton is definitely going to be facing some consequences of their actions, which I love seeing for PCs. Taliesin may have had whatever emotions he had, which are valid, but from a story perspective it was awesome to watch Ashton deal with their bad decisions.
I'll be straight up I thought that was a production assistant on the sides trying to get Laura to say mind whip instead of Tasha's mind whip to avoid copy right issues lol.

Robbie legit felt like just another one of the crew, it's like he's always been here.
So happy he's just clicked with it and running. EXU it took him a while, but I had the same experience with my first dnd game- little alone with Matt fucking Mercer being another PC

"I think it's good... You don't need to roll for that."
The epitome of how to be a good DM.
My thoughts exactly. What a great man our Matt is!
Everyone at the table took some emotional damage because I specifically said they played Remember Me from Coco but-
I really do love Matt's style of DMing and, regardless of anyone's thoughts on the Matt Mercer effect, I feel like DMs everywhere can learn a lot.
Every time that Chetney goes through his transformation I get the image of a rabid Pomeranian entering melee.

it was rightfully overshadowed by the ending, but I think this episode shows very well why Travis was chosen to be the CEO: while he lets others do what they think is important he identifies future threats and if nobody acts on them he will take matters into his own hands. he talked to Dorian's brother to try to prevent the disaster (of course he couldn't succeed, because the disaster had to happen); he followed the bad creepy lady and got vital information from it; he checked the next room during the fight so they could be aware of the additional threat and healed the guard so he would save them later. he also helps refocus the group when they get distracted. and when somebody else seem to handle a problem, he trusts them to do it and goes for the next one. he's also quite observant, keeps tabs on the crew and steps in when needed. like Ashton was the one who started watching the creepy lady, but then he got sidetracked, so Chetney went and finished the job. plus he has good ideas like using his hightened sense of smell to follow the target or jumping out of the window back in the tower that actually surprised Matt. he also shares the gathered info asap so the team can act on it together.

One of the funniest parts of C2 was watching Talisen acting out Caduceouses facial expressions. :P
@Jansmaaa Fjord going through the motions with Cad to get him to look annoyed will live rent free for me. "Give me a real sour puss"
