DCS World 2.7 Settings Optimization Guide

- I put together a quick video to explain all the graphic settings available in DCS World 2.7 and what they do. Click 'Show more' to expand.
I sometimes hear complaints that people have performance issues playing my campaigns. By nature, campaign missions are the most complex scenarios you can encounter in DCS, and therefore, they will push your PC to its limits more than anything else. Naturally, that's where symptoms of problems will start to show, but it's due to a combination of several factors, not the mission itself.
1) Mission design and optimization. This is my part of the job and I do everything in my power to optimize them. I don't use a single unit that's superfluous, and I deactivate ground units and flights once they are out of sight. I have several other tricks too. Of course I could just put 8 aircraft over an empty map - it would run great, but I'd be ashamed to call it a campaign.
2) Your PC. This is entirely under your control. If you have a mediocre PC - like me - have realistic expectations.
3) DCS. Many tend to forget that when they run a campaign mission, they are still playing DCS. If there is a problem with the core game, that problem will be present in the campaign too. Most problems cannot be solved from within the mission editor.
4) Your graphic settings. This can make or break the game. It can make it run smooth on a laptop (like mine) or make a 3080 struggle. Today I'm going to help you dial them in so that you get the most out of what you have. - Ігри
Great advice. This is what ALL DCS players need to know whether they think so or not.
I am a german, so my english is not perfect but also not sooo bad, but your calm voice, your talking speed and your pronunciation is perfect for me to understand every single word. Keep up the good work and thanks for your information about the graphics settings.
Thank you!
I would not use the vsync option in DCS world, if you are using NVIDIA open up the NVIDIA control panel and under "manage 3D settings" go down to Vertical Sync and set it to 'fast' it fixed my screen tearing and does not limit my FPS.
I only have on and off, no fast. And I wouldn't reach 90 FPS anyway :D
Probably the best settings tutorial for DCS, actually explains what each aetting does and the performance hit, so much better then just telling me what yours are
Yea
I was literally about to go searching for DCS optimization tips when I found this in my recommended youtube vids. Thanks Reflected, and also - thanks youtube for recommending something useful.
Follow up:
Tried your tips and noticed a huge improvement! Thanks a bunch!
Thank you for this! Slowly easing my way into DCS and figuring out the different graphics settings was a real challenge -- especially since you can't adjust it on the fly. I'm now flying around at a solid 60 fps at 1080p using my good ol' GTX 1060 6GB. Pretty much copied everything you suggested but turned off SSLR and SSAO.
Good video, exactly what I needed. I liked that you didn't pretend to know the technical terms that you didn't know, and your assumptions are correct. SSLR is for screen space reflections, which means that it can only render reflections of objects that have already been rendered on the screen, making it faster than other reflection rendering techniques. If the object is behind you, it will not be reflected because it's not in the screen space.
Wake turbulence! Never considered that as a performance limiting factor, I'm finding cpu can be a limiting factor in my bigger missions so I'll give it a go. Thanks!
It only makes a difference if there are lots of aircraft around, like a raid of 70 B-17s + escort fighters
And maybe it is useful to remember,
Once you enter your first flight, press alt+enter.
For some reason DCS opens in a borderless window and it kills some of the performance.
You'll notice instantly how smoother it gets just by pressing alt+enter.
If you need to alt+tab for any reason (other apps, pdf briefings, etc ...) just remember to press alt+enter again when you go back to DCS.
I've heard this b4. Reflected what is your opinion on this?
I can vouch for this. I always press alt + enter. I get some fps and gsync kicks in
My dcs steam edition always opens in full screen mode
We have a full screen option now. Not necessary anymore.
@@Kraken9911
Definitely is.
For some reason the start windowed/force fullscreen method is giving better results than starting fullscreen.
I often ALT+TAB to look at tutorials, Chuck's or mission briefs in PDF.
I'll end up doing it anyway.
It just became a routine, very much like a checklist lol
I always start my apps in the same order, I have a good routine now.
And with DCS it is good to stick to something you know that works, especially OB.
I really needed this Video. Keep up the great work!
I went from 80fps to 120fps in a quick start mission just by turning anti aliasing off in game, and letting Nvidia control it instead. Thank you!!
thanks for the video 2.7 has had me re-visiting all these settings and it's good to know what they do and in terms of FPS.
Glad to see it's not just me that keeps tinkering.
Terrain Object Shadows : Default ... will actually use your ''Shadows'' setting.
If you use flat shadows on the first one then the default will be flat as well.
Now I tried different things and the performance hit is quite big with little to no difference most of the time.
Though you can see weird behaviour in lighting transitions, like early morning or evening.
As the sun moves around the shadows will not move smoothly but jump around a bit.
The only moment it could be bothering is when I start up at 5h15AM in front of the hangar, sunrise on the back and the shadow of the hangar.
Past that, I don't really see those glitches.
Now, the clouds aren't moving so shadowing can stay simple.
When the dynamic weather will arrive, it will be something to consider ...
I would not set shadows to flat, it looks weird in the cockpit. But terrain shadows are better off being flat, it's less of a performance hit. Shadow settings can save FPS, but lower settings don't look so crisp inside the cockpit.
@@ReflectedSimulations
I'll try to optimize using your video and see what I can get.
Really great and helpful video! I thought the SSLR and SSAO were anti aliasing settings! I'll experiment with them now I know what they are. You are right it's importance to balance things even in high end machines. Anisotropic filtering improves textures viewed at an angle (like runways on T/O) I find 8x enough usually too. Thanks👍👍
16x has no performance hit on computers since 2008.
@@CAL1MBO Since I wrote that, I'm now on 16x too.
Thanks for the advice on terrain textures and view distance. On my system with the update to 2.7, setting MSAA to 4x causes the terrain and almost all the aircraft to disappear, there's a bug in there somewhere.
Cheers, I'm forever trying to get that perfect balance but never seem to get there. I can get great frames on most maps but not on Syria Especially over cities. I also get a nice setup for single player but then I have to change it for multiplayer. Helps with the multiple custom saves now.
This helped with my stutering issues. Thanks!
The perfect setting of sharp pic for me was goin MSAA x2 and turning FXAA on in NV controll panel (it rounds the edges a bit, you can easily spot it on text in most games this sometimes looks horrible but for some reason it works great in DCS). The pictrue looks sharp and this combo eliminates flickering jagged lines at distances for many objects n stuff and leaves me with FPS range 60-100 ( i capped FPS at 100 as i dont need more as it only leads to high load and temps on my 2080ti in 1440p. Rest settings are on HIGH ). Also i played with forest sliders to a point where it wasnt too distracting with the popping of the trees and balanced it at 90% and 0.85.
You find that FXAA is better in the NVCP than MFAA?
Also the game and any others games starts to feel smoother at 80FPS+ on my G-Sync panel and that is where i always try to aim with LOWs to have them as close to 80FPS in most of the times. In DCS the biggest FPS eater for me apart from any kind of AA is the trees actually if you set them as low as poss you will get even +30 FPS back, but then they will start to pop in and pop out everywhere which looks horrible if you fly close to ground and it is freaking distracting.
@@ReflectedSimulations Actually i have that on as well but i think that is because i still havent finished playing with it to hit the sweet spot. I think when i played with that the overall pic didnt changed and i still saw a bit jagged wing tip pylons and in external when i zoomed out i saw moving lines on the top of F16. When i turned on FXAA everything looked more smooth and it eliminated the moving lines. I will play with it more tonight and will turn off rest of settings in NV panel before i actually switched FXAA on.
@@RostislavHladik @Reflected Simulations FYI, FXAA in the NV control panel has zero effect. It's all placebo.
@@Matthew1028 have you actually try it? Because it is defo working for me i can send you screenshots, first most noticable thing is all the texts in the menus and mfds hud etc.
Great vid helped so much keep it it up
That was really helpful and certainly made my game a lot smoother. Thank you.
Just caught this, will definitely play around with them. Having number of dropped frames recording lately some extra fps might come in useful. Thanks heaps
Awesome video!!
Will definately play around with my settings.
Very good video, easy to understand and follow
Is there an option to disable bloom/HDR? I find it really excessive.
Where's the setting to remove wobbly clouds in VR ?
No setting for that, but I'm sure ED is aware and working on it. Hang in there!
Tks mr Reflected, very useful hints. I think you should do an additional video, showing your GPU panel choices, as it affects directly these hints.
Thanks! I'm no expert of the Nvidia CP, but check out Spudknocker's recent video, he covers that part too. Basically you want to allow DCS to handle as much as possible, leave everything on application controlled.
Yeah, I watched his video too... in DCS panel his configs are very similar to yours
@@skywarp2180 yes, except he's got a much better PC than me haha :) He explains how to make DCS look great, I explain how I made my mediocre laptop handle it :D
I used yours and his hints, and achieved very good results... DCS now looks stunning in my PC, without FPS drops... tks for your patience helping the community with hints, missions, campaigns and skins. I really appreciate your job.
What is that background tone? Fan noise?
Отдельное спасибо за настройки...👍🤝🔥
Thank you for the video, helps a lot!
Here is a stress test or if you just want to torture your computer.
Load of those CBUs that shoot upwards the skeets that then rain down bomblets. CBU96 iirc. Load 4.
Scatter some enemys in a small area and release the CBUs over target. Go to a external view and watch the carnage. My upper end rig/32 gigs fast SSD takes a big hit. Now add clouds. I then get 1-3 frames for 20 seconds, sometimes CTD. In cockpit looking away keeps the fps up.
Learned a lot with your video. Thanks!
Now that is what We needed. Awesome stuff sir
Thanks for sharing
👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
You mention to first set NVCP and when thats not enough use MSAA. Which setting in the NVCP can control this? I fly VR and want to safe some FPS by turning off MSAA but that makes the visuals to bad. Maybe if I can control it a bit via NVCP it helps. Great video by the way.
FXAA off, AA 2x, Enhance, MFAA on - may not be the best setting, though, but this is what I use in the NVCP.
@@ReflectedSimulations Nice mate, gone try these out. Thanks for the help.
@@Bobbyjuwing Nice gliding videos btw, I'm a glider pilot too :)
@@ReflectedSimulations Nice! I have many more footage of my gliding trips but just don’t have the time to edit it in to a video 🙈
Are there changes you would recommend for 2.8?
Which hardware u have?
I have GeForce 3060 and a ryzen 7 3700X
And i have only 60fps in free flight
And 30 fps in Multiplayer With ca 5 Or 6 Planes
This is normaly ?
Need help :)
Thank you very much!
I’m waiting for 3.0 and the Vulkan API to make the plunge… I’m into VR and at the moment the game is not optimised at all unless your ready to spent big big money and with the prices of GFX’s being high as they are, it’s not possible to have a decent experience for a decent buck!
My Oculus Quest 2 arrives tomorrow, and I only have an RX470... I don't even know why I bought the quest. I found settings that give me solid 50-60 fps in 2d (capped at 60 by vsync, if I turn it off, fps jump up and down to low 70s), but I'm afraid I'm in for a huge disappointment and a heavy investment into a new graphics card...
@@antonbatura8385 Yeah it does require hefty specs which is why I’m very much looking forward on how they will improve the coding for the API… Exciting times can’t wait for it to be released but yet I’ve read on forums that this “promise” is already looog time overdue… Let’s see what happens in the near future… Good luck with your GFX
@@GillesvanZeebroeck well, damn. It works. Kinda. I was able to connect and do a flight in an Eagle around Nellis, averaging 25-30 fps. I'm impressed.
@@antonbatura8385 let me know what frame rate you still get when flying over highly populated areas like cities and/or in multiplayer environments 😉
@@GillesvanZeebroeck no multiplayer for me with this thing. I'm getting 30ish fps over Las Vegas, but man, my vision is super blurry. I can barely make out the numbers on the HUD. Even so, the experience is amazing.
Thanks for your tips, my game went from 30 fps to around 60 fps!
Specs?
very good, but what is ur PC system???
nice man...great stuff...thanks for sharing!!!!
random thing but wouldn't wake turbulance only be a performance factor (or even decideable) if you're playing singleplayer? im pretty sure most servers have wake turbulance on by default unless im just imagining it as a placebo.
It's a factor when you have lots of aircraft around. And I mean LOTS. That mostly happens in SP.
I have an i7 4790k and an R9 290 with this video I was able to take it to 50 FPS, I don't know if it is ideal to play ... but thank you very much
Thanks for the video. Do you know if Visibility Range affects aircraft spotting?
No, I think it's only ground objects like buildings and trees.
That was extremely helpful, thank you!
Yes but......what is ideal FPS? ...... I have heard that over a certain amount of FPS is undiscernible. What is that figure 30, 40, 50, 60?
There's some new options on the VR Tab too, could you tell us about those please :)
I don't have VR :(
@@ReflectedSimulations You should have... and make a video! ;-)
@@ReflectedSimulations have you tried it in VR? I can't even bring myself to play 99% of games on a monitor anymore. The immersion makes you quickly forget the less than stellar visuals.
@@EazyE11 I have tried and I absolutely loved it. I'm just travelling quite a bit and can't afford to drag a VR headset around in my luggage.
@@ReflectedSimulations if you discovered how to get over 40fps with decent visuals please share
Oh didn’t know full screen had an effect on performance..does this also apply to VR?
Brilliant! Thank you, Sir! Subbed.
Thx Reflected, very informative.
Somebody tell me please how to update to 2.7? Where is update button? Is it free if I already have a version 2.6?
This video helped me a lot thx bro
great tutorial. realised I fucked up so many settings that were yoinking my ram big time (I have 32gb and still fucked it up)
Any tutorial on how to force msaa through Nvidia cntrl panel?
I'm not an expert of that (either), but check out Spudknocker's new video, he covers that part too.
@@ReflectedSimulations yes just saw that yesterday. Thanks.
MSAA means Multisample anti-aliasing and SSAA means Super Sampling Antialiasing.
Hi mate nice vid. Can you do an updated one please?
I always heard windowed was the way to go - did it change? Great video!!
Thanks for the guide! I have a question about Nvidia control panel and AA: which AA options have you changed and what are you recommended settings?
Everything off and application controlled.
@@ReflectedSimulations thanks man! and Thanks for your great skins!
If you hover your mouse over the option names ( Clouds, SSAA, etc) it tells you what it does and the performance factor.
For instance, you said "Anisotropic Filtering - almost no performance cost." but if you hover over the text it says "Moderate to Large GPU hit - defaults to 4x"
Brilliant thanks for the good explanation of all this gonna help alot 👍
Could you make a video on how you create skins sometime? That would be really awesome.
Pro tip: stfu.
@@roguereaper1330 ?????
Just 3 things I have doubts about..
First: doesnt Res of cockpit displays also affects the DISPLAYS of the aircraft?
Second: As far as I know, SSAO is a post-processing, and may be VERY taxing on the system. For me it always felt like the game is slower and less responsive in every game I ever tried, at least.
Third: doesnt "Visibility Range" affect how far you can see, for example, a tank or a target on TGP? I heard some people saying that on lower settings, sometimes the targets dont appear in TGP, only appearing when you get considerably close.
Thx for the vid, man! :D
Hey, good points. Yes, it also affects cockpit displays, but I rarely fly aircraft that are THAT modern haha. So the most obvious for me are mirrors. SSAO costs 5 FPS for me, I tried. Your mileage may vary. It costs less than notching up the shadow settings for sure. As for visibility range, it's the rendering of objects - I rarely fly aircraft with TGP-s ,s I don't know if it affects that too.
A button to make tanking mre difficult. How nice. Next is the "hit your head against the wall" button.
Lol
Do to think I should get DCS from steam or the standalone ?
Standalone, definitely. Better support, you get releases sooner, and all the money goes to the developers.
thanks for the explanation.
What's your pc specs ?
Very helpful thanks !
What’s your pc setup?
Hi! The video is really good, but I have a question what is your specs?
msi gp65 with a 2060 and 32 GB RAM
Thx mate, it is great help..
This was great info. You going to do one on nvidia?
Great video! ;)
thank you for uploading this!
Excellent !! Thanks a lot
Say what are your specs and how much fps do you get with these settings?
I have an MSI GP65, and the fps depends on the mission, but usually 40-50 on the ground and 70-80 in the air.
@@ReflectedSimulations so an i7 and 2060?
@@dampmaky yes, with 32 RAM

Awesome ThX!
What's your specs
2060, 32GB RAM, i-7-10750
Ok hold up.. The 10-20 fps estimates for me are more like 0.5 - 1 LOL, I'm sitting at mostly everything off and 12 - 20 fps, if I'm lucky 30. If I dare try a server, 0 - 5 fps for 90% of the time I'm on the server. My system is a Ryzen 5 2400G, 16gb ddr4 ram, and an Rx 550 2gb model. With an internal hdd, so not the best.. but somehow runs it enough that I find it playable. Oh, and if I attempt to use an MFCD, my fps gets tanked. Especially if I use bhot.
My standards for this game have gotten so low, that as long as I can somewhat make out the imagine/text in the cockpit or on the MFCD's, for example on the tpod or Mav. display, I'm fine. Lol.
Good stuff 🐳
Thanks man! :)
"You wont see........Jack shit!" xD xD xD
Sucks on AMD side, their antialiasing settings only works on DirectX 9 so we got no option than to use the MSAA on the game. AMD is so stuck in the past, wish i bought nvidia instead. As soon the market stabilizes i'm switching with no second thoughts
I Got 24.7 average fps in Radeon R9 380 Series
That card is quite old for the challenge. I'd try terrain shadows to flat, terrain textures to low, shadows to medium or low, msaa 2x, all other AA turned off and see if it gets better. MAybe even textures to medium.
@@ReflectedSimulations thanks for the reply
