  • My climb along the Knife Edge on the upper NE ridge of 14er Torrey's Peak - otherwise known as Kelso Ridge - on August 10th, 2020. It is a 30-40 foot stretch of class 3 rock with significant exposure on both sides. This was part of an overall hike & climb of both Torrey's and neighboring Gray's Peaks that day. These are the highest peaks in the Front Range of Colorado, and this was my 2nd time climbing them. However, never before had I attempted to climb this particular ridge, which posed numerous challenges. For my video of the entire climb up Torreys and Grays that day: • Grays and Torreys Peak...

      Thanks again O.E.....this ridge was a fairly tough climb, of which this particular stretch is just the most well-known part. There were several upward climbing stretches that were at least as scary. Those will have to wait until the next video though. Later. -C.T.

    I’m planning to do this next year. It’ll be my first Class 3 route. Got an experienced guide to lead it. Looks sketch as heck.

      Well, good luck on it. The route has a few challenging cruxes - this just happens to be the last one. It might not seem quite as scary once you make it through everything leading up to it.

    Climbing all the way up this ridge was quite an adventure, of which this segment was just the final major obstacle. Whew, you're a gunner on either side !!!!! What's the approx. drop elevation on each side?

    • @CentennialTreks
      @CentennialTreks  4 роки тому

      I think it is maybe about 50 feet of steeper rock slabs on each side protruding up from less sloped terrain.

    Disagree with going around the right of the white rocks.. if you're in shape enough / calm enough to traverse the knife edge, the climb over the white rocks is a piece of cake in comparison.

      Honestly, at the time I didn't even assess the possibility of going over the top of the white rocks - I was just following the established route information I had read. And actually, someone commented on my video of the full route that they had gone over the top of the white rocks also. As you probably recall, this "knife edge" is a very short segment in comparison with the entire Kelso ridge stretch. There are a few places where taking a bad turn can lead into precarious terrain, so I was keen to try and stay on a known viable path, even if there are more than one. I actually did get off course on the occasion shown here, not long before the knife edge, but fortunately found the better path again without great hassle or danger.....But given what you & others have said, if I am ever on this route again, I will definitely climb over the top of those rocks! Anyway, thanks for watching this & commenting on it!
