Behind the Screen: Jacques Demy's Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Girls of Rochefort) (Belgium 1966, André Delvaux). -
It’s so bittersweet that Francoise Dorleac passed away so soon after this film. She was a brilliant woman that left the world far too soon. She has such buoyancy and vitality that so many others lack. What she left us with is a masterpiece, and she will never be forgotten.
Idem 100%
Maxence's song is so beautiful
Danielle Darrieux chantait donc vraiment.
I saw Jacques Demy's Les Demoiselles de Rochefort 9 times over two weeks, in around 2008, on the big screen, enjoying it more each time. So I think that has to be my record. And in the summer of 1966, when the film was being made in Rochefort, I was painting in Normandy. I loved it for many reasons, one of which was that it never imitates reality, it is a pure artifact. The comments by Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac about making a film in France, towards the end, are interesting. They say French society looks down at you for being in films. Strange, given that this is 1966 and we have seen such a marvellous flowering of superb French films in La Nouvelle Vague.
The two sisters are a delight.
(21 Mars 2020)
Quelle période merveilleuse ! avec des acteurs sublimes
35:59 that was so natural and cute. they relationship was so beautiful.
this footage is priceless, the part with Demi and Legrand together with the piano and cigarette etc. Best movie man and best song writer ever to have lived, in one shot, doing their work. one other thought... was that choreographer really named Norman Maine??? That is hilarious. If I were him, I'd have introduced myself as Norman Maine, otherwise known as Mr. Vicki Lester !!!
Quel document !
So sad that Francoise died shortly after this film 💔🌹
babba ruff
Yes... Poor young lady, so young...
Effectively, in June 1967 one year before I was even born. So, Françoise Dorléac passed away in a dreadful car accident. Catherine Deneuve lost a sister and French cinema one of its most promising actresses. The miracle of Jacques Demy is to have managed to get Gene Kelly and Françoise Dorléac to act in the same movie, and a musical in the American style of which Gene Kelly was the embodied presentation. At the time, Françoise Dorléac was already more famous than her younger sister Catherine. They seemed to bond so well they could really pass for twin sisters....
Catherine always comes across as unreachable, while Françoise Dorléac seemed down to earth and angel-like at the same time. She is in God's hands now.
" down to earth and angel-like at the same time " ,very touching, but according to Catherine, she was too sensitive and "the most immature person she's met ". I've met Catherine, she seems "cold hearted " at first sight, but, she is a sweet heart trying to hide it , and extremly mature from a very young age .
Very sad.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
This is so awesome... Probably the greatest movie I have ever seen ("Young Girls")... and now I get to see behind the scenes?!@!?! Merci. Oh my. Thank you.
Yeah. Probably my most watched film too. It's just too fun, though rewatch after rewatch I discover many sad parts that are buried under the silliness and light-heartedness
Michel Legrand était vraiment un génie. J'adore sa musique, entrainante, anthousiaste, poétique, joyeuse.
Just discovered this fascinating documentary. It's was a wonderful but short insight into the film process. I could listen to francoise for hours. So intelligent with so much to offer. Such a terrible shame.
le cinéma... quelle magie
Chef d’œuvre absolue! Vive la France!!!
I truly admire the creators of this movie and also the creators of this documentary! Quality work
this is so wholesome. i needed this 💘
Un film superbe et très beau
Norman Maen is very articulate explaining his approach to the choreography.
Francoise died right after this film completed - must be difficult for Catherine to watch this footage.
She didn't die right after completing this film.
She made another film, Billion Dollar Brain, before her death.
And where the spies are with David Niven
@@clemenceimbert5737 In 1965.....
Merci pour cette vidéo! Quel bonheur!
Talents exceptionnels.
Moin Dieu, Françoise était dynamite pure...
This is from Flemish Television, BRT! My home country and my employer (now called VRT though).
It's weird that I watched the movie in color but behind the scene is in black and white
Love this movie-the epitome of romance. The music is fabulous and it features the great Gene Kelly's last serious dancing on Film. Kelly choreographed his own dances (including the sublime pas de deux with Solange in the music store. Norman Maen choreographed the other dances.
I love how high class people all smoked in those days, because it gives us these wonderful scenes to watch and the cigarette and its smoke is an amazing prop, but I am sad that it killed most of them early. Does anyone know what brand Norman Maine was smoking? He had two packs on his worktable for todays session, next to his thermos bottle. I am so proud of the marketing efforts of big tobacco from a marketing perspective, they got us all to inhale smoke from fire and poison for 60 years in a row, and pay to do it. That is good marketing. That's like convincing everyone to willingly give themselves cancer. But the cost was great in suffering and death of millions. They talk about Hitler. At least he was doing it because he was insane, not just as a business to get money.
Rothmans. British cigs - very popular in their day.
@@simonbell6846 The same I SMOKE 3 a day - 3 cigarettes 100's lights.....
Interesting video. It's a shame it's in French but the subtitles do help.
Amusant.
please I am trying to find this movie on line or dvd
❤
Triste :(
Where is `CC`?
When you hover your mouse on the video, the menu appears at the bottom of the picture. "CC" is at the bottom right, along with the Settings, Theater Mode and Full Screen buttons.
Was this filmed in English as well
Yes, an English-language version was shot as well. It might be lost now, although Agnès Varda included brief clips from it in her documentaries on Jacques Demy.
+lachambreverte thank you, I would have thought it would have been a bonus on the Blue Ray, beautiful film, reminds me of summer.
When Maxence got in the truck at the end, was Catherine Deneuve supposed to be inside it? ( I would have thought definitely yes, but it seems to me that there wasn't much room in the truck.)
I thought that he didn't enter to the same truck as Delphine was in.
You know, those sisters are sort of pretty.
Ouate doux you make s'aide datte, eh?
Sort of? They’re gorgeous
@@garanceyy Francoise was pretty. Catherine was gorgeous.
How did they stay so thin
They're French! 🙂
They smoked like chimneys!
We didn't have American processed junk food in France back then...
What a shame it’s in black and white.
