Who would have believed we'ed be listening to a bass viol duet? I have listened to NHOP most of my adult life and he along with Ray Brown were the best of their era. Christian McBride is the best of the current crop of bassists. I must pay homage to a young man from the past who I believe would have been one of the best, if not the best but alas, he left us to drugs. His name was Albert Stinson and he played with the Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd Quintet in the '60s.
6:36 is why McBride is the Modern Maestro of the double bass. That phrase is unreal. The ending harmonic made me spring off my chair! And NHOP is of course a dearly missed legend. I adore his chordal playing.
Niels could do everything with such virtuosity on the bass. That chord playing is as impressive as the blazing solos. He must have been able to break bricks with those hands.
My 2 honest favorite upright bass players, such incredible technique and skill, if you want inspiration to be the best look no further than these guys!
Love how some have commented that their bass's sound out of tune...yep, that's right, because your musical ear is so much better than two of the greatest jazz bassists of their respective generations!
People say little or nothing about Christian's (I think he is in great pitch) but he is unfortunately thrown off by NHOPS way out of tune G string (and who does nothing to fix the issue!)
My thoughts, exactly. It's not as noticable when you're the only bassist, but when you're playing with another one, it gets more difficult. NHOP was the greatest, and Christian is awesome, as well. As far as intonation goes, Niels was always on point, IMHO.
Sure these guys are excellent, especially of course Pedersen, but they sound really terrible here. I mean the actual sound of their instruments - awful tone.
Agree, but it's not the amp. It's simply terrible intonation. Good intonation on double bass is quite difficult. I know only one famous player with really good intonation: Renaud Garcia Fonds.
This is absolutely exquisite. Brings a tear to my eye to think that NHOP is no longer with us

なんだろ?この圧倒的な安定感、ビート、グルーヴ、そして前に出る音、、、マクブライド 驚愕だ。学ぶところが多い。ペデルセン 本当にお疲れ様、有難う、貴方は伝説そのものだ。
What a treat. Mcbride's bass sounds funky...
I hope I can play one day like these guys!
My god, Niels's bass sounds amazing, the way he plays chord on an upright bass. I have never seen that before.
Check out his Samba Petite Solo With The Late great Oscar Peterson (1994) Bril
whoever's selecting the camera shots knows their shit, thank goodness
It's like attending a Great Spiritual Experience.♫♪♫ What Great Bassist.♫♫♫♫ Love seen Them Playing.!!! THANKS.
Tears running down my face.
It is so sweet to see these two greats on stage together
I didn't know that these greatest musicians have played together. So, nice to see!
👏🏾👏🏾
Incredible! I didn't even know two basses could make a piece of music as complete as that!
A huge thanks to UA-cam just to be able to listen to music such as this here in South Africa
What I would pay to hear him play again. As Oscar Peterson said: “Some bass players PLAY the bass. Niels-Henning WAS the bass.”
NHOP's solo at 3:47
This is proof that a lot of great things are happening in life when you're too busy not paying attention.
My 2 honest favorite upright bass players, such incredible technique and skill, if you want inspiration to be the best look no further than these guys!
Imagine the Superbass albums with Nhop added, 4 giants together. Too bad these guys didn’t collab much more...
2 of the Best!
What a treat❤❤
Outrageous and wonderful.
Bassists...love them!
Total gift of joy
Absolutely amazing.
This is awesome
Bravo! 👏
my god,incredible...
Just WOW!!!!!
Thanks Per.
Super Pedersen ... magnific
Such a command performance. Wow.
With all respect to both this really talented virtuoso , I do not think this happened good. But how I set , respect !!!
Just wow!!
See music is really a wonderful conversation.
Excellent
NHØP is in a league of his own! Oh yeah, and the other guy's pretty good too ;-)
True Masters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear a lot of Ray Brown's influence in McBride.
Superb! And nice back-up work.
They are .not quite in. tune.
Wow.
Great, I miss the days in Boomer, Vanguard etc. I don't hear this anymore.
To giants having a ball digging each other.
the best
Holy Sh!t
Mostri sacri
I just wanna find someone who looks at me like christian looks at niels
@3:17 hey buddy
Ok I couldn't play like this if I lived to be a hundred but (am I allowed to say this ?), the tuning and intonation here is pretty grim ...?
I am glad that I am not alone in thinking that .
Yes, that struck me from the start. Thought they did that on purpose, just to get in tune later (but that did not happen).
☘️😀
2:17 :o
BASS.
this is definitely what we should show aliens were they to visit us
Omg 2:45
Uhhhh is it me or was both McBride's and Pedersen's intonation a little bit ropy on this one?
Tom D I was just thinking that.
There’s a reason I know of these two and not you
Jona Cox ?? ?
Ditto, Jona Cox….?? ?
Tom…….it certainly was ropey for quite some while until the half way mark when they finally settled in and sorted out their flats and sharps!
03:05
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen should've tuned the strings up a slight twang!
Chris too!
Agree!
The two basses should have said hello before being played!!!!!!!!
Lennart Länk aka helluvagun it sounds out of tune even with the open strings so...give a rest to the masters. It must be the amp.
I don't think that he'd be offended if you just call him Niels-Henning, or at least NHØP
Love how some have commented that their bass's sound out of tune...yep, that's right, because your musical ear is so much better than two of the greatest jazz bassists of their respective generations!

Great talents make mistakes as well.
@@tomasviane3844 hmmmm....not the kind of basic basic mistake that can be spotted by someone with infinitely less talent.
dire
Makes me want to quit bass not because how good they are
But how bad intonation can wreck a performance even for NHOP
Oh well comes with the territory
I know right! Guess they were both just having a bad day.
Well intonation is a bitch you never get it right and thats the beauty of it
Jer Smith Neil’s perhaps nervous and pitching badly -Sad for such a good lplayer
He’s harmonising badly too as if he lost the changes Mmm
I don't know if they play out of tune on purpose, but that does not sound harmonious to me. Not sure what went wrong.
What the fuff!
+Lennart Länk
NHOP and Chris McBride could be there as Ray was!
I can't get Pedersen...
I love Niels but that performance was just totally out of tune.
Not totally but yeah, sometimes. Both. Maybe they were really tired, it's a festival.
ぬんん
These are 2 of my all-time favourite players. But this is unlistenable. The intonation is so far out as to be painful.
So glad I'm not the only one that thinks so, aha.
Someone told me the standard for Intination has gone up
Graeme Oxley Mac Bride was laughing at how out of tune it all was !!
A bit sad really

what is more out of tune that 2 basses? 3 basses...they were cooking though
More like Bye-bye Niels Henning :'
super messed up
Falsch immer🤣🤣🤣Unmeglich.
Sure these guys are excellent, especially of course Pedersen, but they sound really terrible here. I mean the actual sound of their instruments - awful tone.
I'm pretty sure it's the amp they are using.
Agree, but it's not the amp. It's simply terrible intonation. Good intonation on double bass is quite difficult. I know only one famous player with really good intonation: Renaud Garcia Fonds.
Their tone is impeccable, their time is impeccable, their intonation is a little iffy.
Tone. Nasty, nasty tone. I dunno if it's pickups or mics or sound tech, but yeah. Nasty.
Очень фальшиво.
