My playgroup has a running joke of someone asking which die is a d12 and someone else saying "the one with twelve sides" can't wait to play this game and answer that the d10 is the one with 20 sides
I didn't realize how much I miss hearing "Peace. Out." from Matt on the regular. Now excuse me while I go back for The Works of clickity clackity math rocks.
First D20 I ever bought (outside the ones that came with the Basic set) was 1-10 twice where the ink for the numbers was either black or red so you could tell high or low.
Oh man, got a hell of flashback when Matt mentioned Chessex's possible involvement in the Day of Thunder. I remember watching his video about that and truly enjoying the story of a game I had never played. I think I have to go watch that video again now.
The oldest dice, used to play what is now known as The Royal Game of Ur, were four-sided but marked with pips on two of the four corners. If a pip was up that was read as one, and if the pipless corner was up that was a zero (well, technically it wasn't counted, since this was before the concept of zero was developed). Three dice were rolled giving a score of zero to three -- in a bellish shaped curve* -- which is how far the player moved a piece. I can't say for certain, but I imagine the pieces were meeples. [*Update: I've since been contacted by Innana, God of Love and War, and was told that it should be called a ziggurat-shaped curve because its stepped rather than smooth.]
I spent like 175 bucks on a museum replica copy of Ur for a gaming enthusiast friend. Love that game. Comes with a built in tray for the beans and dice. There's a great video on UA-cam with Tom Scott and Irving Finkle about it
Man, I just love you guys. The shout out to the L5R video, one of the best pieces of oral history/storytelling ever; I listen to it once or twice a year. And then immediately after a clip from the Road to El Dorado, the greatest movie about a bisexual polyamorous throuple of all time? (Which I also watch once or twice a year) My heart grew two sizes.
So excited , my online friends, hubby and I are going to Gary con in March and I am running a game of Draw Steel for us at night in our Airbnb :D so of course I got the works :D
I literally cheered at my computer screen when the 20 sided d10's were mentioned. I was already thinking about how perfect those would be for Draw Steel!
Not only is this a great way to raise money for the game, but it's also a VERY good way to support your LGS! If Draw Steel Minis/Merch become available, having collectible bits with unique abilities and features on them is a perfect way to encourage Roleplayers (a typically low-profit LGS demographic) to buy things and support their stores. Glad to see someone capitalizing on this in a way beyond minis and figures and actually including MECHANICAL reasons to support the dev team and LGS. BRILLIANT.
All the editions of Talislanta are d20 based, and in some it's the only die used. I started out by using my mom's icosahedral d10 from the Holmes Basic Set; it's got the faded remains of old pen ink in the numbers since they weren't painted back then, and purple marker residue from when I was little and tried to recolor it to differentiate the sides for the tens digit.
I can't tell you how important it was to me that we can use any dice. And this is super cool, so it feels great to have both cool dice and not require my players to buy special dice.
I've got a lot of dice, Matt. A lot of them. Of nearly every polygonal variation. That's never a problem for me. The problem is how to stop acquiring the precious hand-candy. How?! Edit: Aaaaaaand now I'm the 1999th backer, marked down for the Good King Omund set. Thanks, Evil Matt. :P
I actually own a few real D3. You used to be able to just buy them and a bunch of other less common dice around here off the shelf in a few places years ago and I picked up a bunch of non-D6, six sided dice at that time
Yeah, okay, you got me. I was really expecting some cheap gimmick, like DCC, but I have to approve of this. I had those d10/20's bitd, and I had a six-sider that was numbered 1-3 twice that I got out of a board game. No, of course nobody needs them, but when it comes to cool dice, that just doesn't matter.
As someone who finds the dodecahedral die criminally neglected, I would love a 12-sided D3 (as well as a six- or four-sided D2, although that would reduce my ability to justify my shiny noncommercial coin collection)
I was just about to say at the screen, WHAT ABOUT MODIPHIUS! Silly me, of course Matt mentioned them! Excited for the success of Draw Steel! Congrats to the whole team!
My dad played first edition when it came out, and he told me they played with a 20 sided d10 and a d6. You rolled both, and if the d6 was higher than 3, you added ten to the d10. I don't know if that was ever the standard or if his group just couldn't find the real thing.
Hey there! The pledge for "just the dice" doesn't seem to be available on the backerkit site. It looks like it's under add-ons, but I don't see a way to purchase it on its own.
Why Matthew? WHY? My fall 2024 responsible GM budget was just done, and you come up with this? Of course I need "The Works". Money is temporary but memories made with friends are forever... Absolutely love the response you guys are getting from the community. 100% deserved
We feel people have D6s. I’ve been following these channels for about 6 months now, catching up on everything (and I’m hooked), but nowhere in any video I’ve watched have I seen a name announcement. The beginning of this video totally blindsided me 😂 I feel like I know something I shouldn’t now
The dice in this game are to be interpreted as 1-10. So if your die has a 0 on it, just pretend it says 10 instead. So 2 0s is 10+10=20, the highest roll
The world got off easy when Matt went into game design instead of marketing. That man's charisma can sell a blindfold to a beholder.
I mean, do you want to interact with magic items without disabling them every time you look at them?
Not really 😅
charisma? this guys is so fucking annoying and pretentious
That's like 9 blindfolds
@@djmor693 Thats a good point... I'll take 10 blindfolds please!
>Name of the game is 'Draw Steel'
>No steel dice made just for it
Now the director can't say "Draw Steel" to the players and actually mean it.
This is easily solved by having each player bring their own steel sword to the table
And that's why I always carry a sword.
Just need to propel this game to ubiquity so that 3rd parties start making them!
@@the_dice_society Maybe for the sake of saving space, you could have each player come to the table with a steel letter opener?
This idea is great.
My playgroup has a running joke of someone asking which die is a d12 and someone else saying "the one with twelve sides"
can't wait to play this game and answer that the d10 is the one with 20 sides
"You do not need special dice to play this game" Idk guys, I'm thinking I might need special dice to play this game.
also love the idea that to somebody outside of the ttrpg space, anything but a d6 is a special die
Yeah, these dice sound somewhat mandatory... Can't fathom how the game would work without them.
@@DerrangedGadgeteer Well, you can use a d20, just subtract 10 from results over 10. Or you can use normal d10's
@@ChemistGeometric Very fathomable apparently.
@@ChemistGeometricor ignore the 10s digit, people are scared of subtraction.
A video is never short, nor is it long. It's exactly as long as it needs to be.
Length :D
I didn't realize how much I miss hearing "Peace. Out." from Matt on the regular. Now excuse me while I go back for The Works of clickity clackity math rocks.
The dice so nice they have their numbers printed twice!
Look at that Ajax Edition box in the background!!
I've been in a bit of a rough spot financially lately, so I'm really glad there's a small, one-time thing I can do to support Draw Steel. Thanks MCDM!
Asking for 1,000 backers… 10,000 backers later
First D20 I ever bought (outside the ones that came with the Basic set) was 1-10 twice where the ink for the numbers was either black or red so you could tell high or low.
Weeps in Dodecahedron ... twelve sided d3's, so close, yet so far away. Stupid cubes.
Don't worry. They'll be printing their d6s on dodecahedrons. We all win.
Dodecahedron is a tongue that finds home in sorrow
I got my 12-sided die ...
I have used my same Chessex dice since college and just seeing the Chessex tapestry up in a hobby shop is just such an experience.
Matt freaking Colville, on my youtube feed? Preposterous.
Oh man, got a hell of flashback when Matt mentioned Chessex's possible involvement in the Day of Thunder. I remember watching his video about that and truly enjoying the story of a game I had never played. I think I have to go watch that video again now.
Ridiculous and awesome - this is some "Flee, Mortals!" level of coolness. Great ideas! Love it.
I don't need them, I don't need them, I don't need them...I NEED THEM!!!!!

Yes. YES IT IS TO MUCH MORE SYMMMETRICAL!!!!!!!! YOU READ MY VERY SOUL!!!!!!!
These dice also work perfectly as trick dice for Dragonbane when you need a good roll! Doubles your chance of landing a dragon, too!🤣
I can definitely survive without these, but I'm glad you are excited and I'm glad these will exist for folks that want them!
You made an L5R Reference. Now I really want to play this game.

Pendragon, Dragonbane... there's a bunch of non-D&D games who use a d20 but to roll low (within a skill rating) instead of high (to meet a DC).
Vaantikalisax dice!? Ride that lightning baby!!
Last of the Storm Knights!
So excited to run my first campaign!
A river to his people.
A river of dice.

So glad chessex are involved. Love their dice
I went out and bought some 20 sided d10s on Ebay as soon as the backer packet came out! I love that I had the same thought as y'all!
Just backed the Sir Jon set. So stoked for these Djordice!
The oldest of old school and the newest of the new school all in one game! =D

I’m glad your negotiations with Don Reents went well lol
Two hours after the Backerkit drops and it's at 3x the goal already 🥰
I was fine and still firm in just using the d10s I already have.... untill the Good King Omund box..
I was just about to say at the screen, WHAT ABOUT MODIPHIUS! Silly me, of course Matt mentioned them! Excited for the success of Draw Steel! Congrats to the whole team!
A great idea. I am so tempted ...
Good shit, ya love to see it
My husband still has his original pair of 20-sided & 10s.😂
I never order dice but… Gosh uncle Matt this is looking like a great time to start!
Really cool!
My dad played first edition when it came out, and he told me they played with a 20 sided d10 and a d6. You rolled both, and if the d6 was higher than 3, you added ten to the d10. I don't know if that was ever the standard or if his group just couldn't find the real thing.
I was literally just re-watching the Many Fail States video where Matt brought out his 20-sided d10
I just backed and I wanted to say:
DAMN YOU MATT COLVILLE! DAMN YOU FOR MAKING A PRODUCT I WANT! JUST TAKE MY MONEY!
It'd be cool to have 2d6 also. The shadow uses them and everybody uses at least 1d6 when they're dying
We figure people got D6s
But we put in links to Chessex so you can get matching D6s if you want
So excited!
Reading through the Original '74 booklets I was shocked to see the d10 was not included in the list of dice. Now I know why!
Hey there! The pledge for "just the dice" doesn't seem to be available on the backerkit site. It looks like it's under add-ons, but I don't see a way to purchase it on its own.
There's a $1 pledge option, then you can do the add on 🙂
Heh it was always only a matter of time. Matt's a dice goblin.
I believe the name is euclidean solids
you could also use a d24 divided by 8
Damn you, because I have to get "The Works!" 🎲😄🎲😄🎲

Absolutely should have made dodecahedron that ran 1-3 four times. I absolutely would have bought one of these sets if that’s what they included.
No lie, I think my old Chessex dice roll a lot better than most new brands of dice.
I have a d6 thats numbered 1-3 twice! I frequently will sneak it to players by shady NPCs to roll during dice gambling games and whatnot.
I thought I had a d20 with 2 10s, but I actually only have a d20 with 1-5 results.
Crayon dice! Old school
Cypher uses d20 and, of course, Dragonbane. Any others?
Lancer
@@jamesmilner3540 lancer is definitely cut from the dnd cloth though
On the rare occasion that I am supposed to roll a d3, I roll a d4 and reroll 4s, but everyone always acts like I'm crazy for doing that.
Torg and Modiphius' 2d20 system also use d20s, btw.
You son of a gun, I'm in!
I would really like to buy new dice, especially those beautiful MCDM dice, however they're too expensive for me 😢
Goal is once the molds are made and the dice are available to buy on the shop in the future, the cost will be much more affordable.
Will these be the dice that come in the Ajax Edition, or will those be different?
The Ajax Edition will have its own unique dice.
Just pledged, and now I can ask...when will we get the censor in a playtest to use with these awesome dice?
Will the QR codes for the titles be available in the Good King Omund box set?
Yes, on the box you can see there is a QR code there.
Wait, if you need d6s, how come the set doesn't come with matching d6s?

The Draw Steel Ajax Edition in the background is glaring at me as i click the backerkit link 😅😅😅
2 D10... so a D20 but with a better probability of getting a good result. Nice.
Dice goblins assemble!
So if you're playing with 2d10 and roll 2 0s, is that 0, 10 or 20?
This is why ours are numbered 1 to 10 ;)
The dice in this game are to be interpreted as 1-10. So if your die has a 0 on it, just pretend it says 10 instead.
So 2 0s is 10+10=20, the highest roll

The dark eye uses 3 d20 xD
My beloved Torg RPG uses d20s, and is not a D&D clone or fork. But, yes, most ttrpgs don't use d20s.
Jokes on them, my d20s never roll above a 10 anyway....
Does DS no longer use standard d6s?

The d20 d10 is hilarious as a cursed die
