This week we share a video of a memorial held for Brendon McSmith on the west coast in Berkley. This event was mostly childhood, high school, and Kung Fu friends of Brendon’s. Rachel has also added a few other clips of Brendon chatting with me. Brendon McSmith was a good man and is remembered fondly by all who knew him. Brendon touched many people’s lives with his caring, generosity, strength, and unique sense of humor. His "10 Rules to Live By" distill a profound wisdom that transcends the particulars of his own experiences, offering a guiding light for living a life of purpose, resilience, and compassion. He will be missed by us all.
Whenever we lose someone, we have cherished, it hurts. There is no way around it. Remembering our friends and loved ones well and cherishing our best memories of them helps.
As we get older our circles of friends can shrink. During the covid crisis many of us lost people to the pandemic. I think many of us also lost touch with many friends due to relocations and transitions in housing, family, and work.
The isolation of pandemic is proving to be difficult for many people, especially young people to shake. It seems people although we may be craving contact after the isolation of covid we are still having a hard time connecting.
I encourage everyone to reverse this trend and make new connections and new friends. I think we could all use a refresh on our friend pool and expansion of our friend pool. It is a natural part of life that as our lives change the circle of our acquaintances and friends also changes. It is a natural process of growth that perhaps we should enhance now.
Although it is hard to have more than a few close friends, and it seems harder to make new friends once we are adults, it is important. Maybe this is a good year to make real efforts to find those new people in your life and reach out to them and build a new relationship or two and grow your world.
