The amount of ego lifters using clueless spotters is always classic irony. Can't admit they want the spotter to take, but then fail more obviously and embarrassingly than they would have, and risk injuring themselves, the spotter and anyone else around them while possibly damaging the gym equipment. Classic.
For my own understanding, what should the spotter have done in that situation

Dear spotters, as soon as the bar moves down instead of up you can give assistance, don't worry about the lifter's ego, better to damage that than their neck.

My gym has only one type of spotters: those who hard assist you from the first rep.
And then when I'm asked to be one they expect me to do the same: helping from rep 1

Spotter at 2:50 wasn't in the wrong, guy on the bench telling him not to touch it like he wasn't struggling with the weight at all.
Yeah as a general rule, if the bar starts to drop down, it usually means you should assist them.
OE is right. The spotter should have just walked away after that.
When did he tell them not to touch the bar. I turned the volune up, you are just assuming that.

It's always better to tell a spotter what are your expectations before the lift, than later not to have comfort of knowing you did that 1rep yourself ;)

I've asked probably 100 people to spot me over the years on bench, and I just had my worst spotter two days ago.
He asked if I needed a lift off, and I said no, but he kept both hands on the bar from the first rep, and it felt like he was helping me way too much. I told him not to help, but I realized he never took off his headphones so he couldn't hear me. After my 4th rep, I paused with my arms outstretched and told him to take his hands off, but he thought I wanted to re-rack so he starts pulling it back onto the pegs. I'm not, "No dude, not yet!" so he lets go abruptly and almost knocks the weight off balance toward my legs. I was like, "Don't touch it!" and pushed one more rep out unassisted before I racked it.
He apologized after, but I had no idea what to even call that set. Decided it never happened and did the same exact set with somebody else.
It's way too easy to take for granted the knowledge of how to spot somebody on bench. Also, I'm going to make sure they can actually hear me next time.
I've never asked anyone to spot me . Roll of shame, because i can deadlift and squat, i can easily take the bar from myself. Dont be a pussy, dont be femboy. Do it alone. If you are femboy who afraid to do bench press without spotter, use safety pins. dont be a half of male. be a male. make your mother proud

On a serious note, the guy who wouldn't let the spotter help him with his bench press and then lifted his butt and "exorcist arched" to rack the bar, proves that changing a flat bench to a decline bench press is easier, and therefore "cheats" a flat bench press.
I don't think that was ever debated, all lifted your ass is illegal in powerlifting.

tbh most gym goers never spot including me so we kinda dont know what to do in these situations... do it with a professional or with someone who already spotted once in his lifetime...
I go to the gym for years, I'm someone asks me to spot I will say no. First because I think it should not be necessary, second because I don't think I am a good spotter and will make a mistake in a possible dangerous situation. I would need some training to be a good spotter. Fortunately, in my gym most people train without.
Say yes, but tell them you dont know how and ask if they are sure. You get free training and a clear conscience, win win.

Because he's above the weight that he can curl and can't lift it alone. He probably just wanted to vertical press his max and needed help getting it up.
It's a stupid ego thing, but guys like that don't want to use isolation machines and would rather risk failing with free weights.
I did 50kg dumbbells for 6 on friday after benching but ok 🤣🤣

Also more efficient to not waste energy AND accidentally resting while quickly while swapping weights. A good spotter is better than a dropset, but also carries some risk.
This was mostly a communication fail. Heavy dumbell press should not be possible to set down smoothly without dropping or help. Spotter was correct to assume lifter was not stupid enough to try it.
Lifter was lucky all he got was nuts on his chin and not a torn rotator cuff.

First Rule of Lifting Weights:
Never try to lift what you cannot rack on your own, even if it is your "Max" you need to be self reliant, barring an injury, quit being soft.

I’ve seen some of the worst spotter I’ve ever seen in the last 12 months. Don’t even look at the person, on the phone, looking up.
If you give a job interview and they say they do CrossFit 🚩. Don’t hire them, they will be injured 6 months out of the year.
Easy to prove they didnt injure themselves at work though. Lol
It’s because our diets are getting worse and worse not because of stress. Stress of course does play a factor but diet is clearly the biggest reason
