Shift to brand marketing essentially means that Airbnb stopped spending massive ad dollars on performance marketing. They shifted their focus from throwing money and acquiring customers, to educating them about their product. The main difference is also that performance dollars are spent on new customer acquisition, but brand marketing is also to make current customers purchase again from you, therefore increasing their lifetime value.
