- www.scottpaddo... - STUDY SAX WITH SCOTT PADDOCK
By popular demand, today I do a complete and thorough breakdown of how to play a turn. In the video we talk about the full turn, 3/4 turn, and 1/2 turn... all of these depend on what your land note is. This is one of the most useful embellishments you can use to help and motion to a melody or solo.

😁😁😁
I find all your videos very informative.
Thank you
Merci !
Hi Scott. I've found the turns by playing around different melodies. I thought they sounded good. Now I know I was right playing them. Thanks again for your instructional videos, I say it again "straight to the point and where it matters most". I started with the 2 1/4 & 2 1/2 and I play alternating them and I've never had any problems, it is what I only use. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thanks Doris! Merry Christmas to you too
This has really turned around my playing.. ;)
Thanks Scott. Great lesson as always.
Greetings from Greece.
👍👍👍
Thanks Scott. Very useful as always. Seasonal greetings from the UK
👍👍
Legere also has a exchange policy as well. If you don’t like your size you can send it back to them and they will return you a different size. Look at their website for complete directions. Great lesson today on the turns Scott. I didn’t know that’s what it was called. That’s some Maceo Parker stuff right there!
👍👍👍
I had to go up half a strength with Legere Signature reeds versus cane. Thank you for introducing new products.
That's the opposite of most people, but glad you found one that works!!!
Peter - thank you again. Now to the practice room
👍👍
Sir thank you so much For your lessons .....i requesting you again please show up your fingers on saxophone it would be more helpful for us..... Love from India
Hi! Trying to frame everything in the camera with the correct light and being close enough to the mic I'm using is a pretty tough task. I'll try and get some more of my fingers in there, but it would look weird if you couldn't see me talking and were just watching my fingers 😁
Dear sir actually my English is not so much good I couldn't understand full lessons of your. So I can learn your valuable lessons by watching your fingers 😊
Thanks again, Scott! Merry Christmas from Canada.
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too.
Great stuff Scott! My version of Fly Me to the Moon has just improved some. Thank you and merry Christmas.
👍👍👍 Merry Christmas to you too.
Merry Christmas. Thank you for the video. I enjoyed learning this. I have been using Legere Signature for about 2 years, I found I needed strength about 0.25 to 0.5 harder than the Rico Royal. That goes for both my Rousseau NC 4 and JDX6.
Yeah, Rico Royals are cut a bit soft. I came from Rico Jazz Select which are on the harder side.
Great lesson
Thanks!
I went to Legere reeds about 2 years ago. Have even got 3 other reed players convert to them in the community band I also play with.
Yeah, once you start it's near impossible to go back to the nonsense of messing with cane reeds. I've converted 100s :-).
It would have been good to squeeze in your presentation what the actual turn convention looks like in written jazz music.
Interesting. I have played this ornament for as long as I can remember but didn't know it had a name. In Irish trad music, which I also play on tin whistle, the full turn is called a "roll", but the phrasing is a little different. The emphasis is on the first and last note, with the other three so compacted that you can't really track the pitches. In particular, the fourth "leading" tone is played so fast that more of a pop than a note. You can't really do this on a sax. On the sax, the turn seems to have a smoothing effect. I also find that it's easy to overuse it.
Yeah, it is generally used to make things sound smoother by adding some movement. And it can definitely be over used!
Scott! Thank you. I have a question. Can the Turn be reversed like starting first with the note below?
Yeah. They are not as common, but all you have to do is go down and then up instead of up and then down. You can customize these turns however you want if you're playing jazz.
This turn is known as a “roll” in Irish fiddling, a common (but delightful) ornament.
👍👍👍👍👍
I like your terminology. Are your turn definitions found in any jazz education literature and if so what books are they?
I don't know. That's just what I call them when I teach. I needed a way to differentiate between the turns, so I came up with those titles for them.
Have you tryed to play with a tenor read on your alto mouthpice ??
No, that's a pretty bad idea 😁
It would’ve been good to squeeze in there what an actual turn convention looks like written music. Thank you
Please give us some Sonny Rollins licks for us tenors, The best from the best!
I need to do some tenor and Sonny is about as good as it gets! I'll put it on the list.
Cooler !!! Mas não falo inglês. Não entendi nada. Ah me ajuda aí po
Curious recommendation of reed strength when reed strength totally depends on the mouthpiece you use does it not?
Yes, a mouthpiece can have an effect on the size reed you use. Some mps will require a little stiffer reed and some will require a little softer depending on the how the mp is made.
@@ScottPaddock I would suggest that it can have a really large impact based on tip opening...certainly within say concert mpcs there's probably not much different in strength demand. But amongst jazz pieces my experience indicates there's wide variety of reed strength considerations...even brand can make a difference for certain jazz mpcs. I play 7* selmer jazz and play 1.5 rico plastic cover...when I played a concert mpc years ago I think I played like a 3 or 3 1/2 vandoran - crazy hard compared to what I play now but my mpc is very wide open with high baffle. My Dukoff doesn't seem to like anything but soft Henke.
Hi Scott, i'm using Vandoren jazz #3 for my tenor. Do you think a legere 2.5 Will work for me?
That's what I'd recommend. If it feels a little hard at first give it a week or so to fully break in.
Hi, if i want to buy saxophone same like you, how can i buy from you, im at Vung tau in vietnam
I play a P. Mauriat 67RX. Not sure where you'd buy one in Vietnam, but I'm sure you could google it.
what is the song name u ar teaching¿
Sax Meo Dunno the song but it reminds me of John Coltrane- For Sonny
Más práctica, menos plática. Gracias
