Ok folks, I’ve had a LOT of people ask why I’m using a mannequin with “thick” hair in this video and not a live model with actual thin hair. This video was filmed in the middle of the original pandemic lockdown. I’m sure you can understand why I couldn’t use a live model. Mannequin heads don’t come in thin textures.
Thank you so much for this video! What you said is spot-on, especially about only using texturizing scissors on the very ends. My guy (hair stylist) had to move away and he was the only one that ever cut my fine, thinning hair well. The first gal I tried after he left used DEEP point cutting on my hair and it looked horrible! It didn't lay right when it was straight, and I couldn't curl it without it looking like it had these strange twisting "hair fingers" for lack of a better term! It completely killed my confidence in myself. I never went back and I'm on my third hairdresser in two years trying to explain what I would like them to do, so I really appreciate this! Do you have any videos on how to cut thin, fine hair that is somewhere between collarbone length to just past the shoulders where you show how to actually cut the layers properly to give a little volume on top? I have an appt coming up and I would love to be able to show her what to do to achieve what I want because we can't quite get it right. I've shown her pictures, but that doesn't explain the technique. Thank you for all your efforts in helping us!

However I have thin, fine hair .... and it naturally falls in the middle no matter HOW hard, or for how many Years I've tried to train it to go one side or the other, How to stop it falling into a natural middle parting? I actually got my hairdresser to put 'bangs' in my hair ... (we call it a 'fringe' here in Oz) ... & that one thing helps to make my hair, or me .... appear more youthful, but at almost 70 ... I need more help than a fringe! I see a lot of 'old' women out there who go shorter as they age, but it seems to make them appear more masculine .. Any suggestions as to why this is?
You REALLY know fine hair. The problem is, not many stylists are educated about how to work with it. Even though I gave up on finding a stylist many many years ago (and I cut my own hair), I will try some of your tips. Thank you for the great advice and your excellent videos.
I find most hairdressers still cut hair as if working on the doll,they got no confidence to trust their own eyes.never been to a dresser who got it.i like the idea Vidal sassoon had to cut the hair so that when you just shake it it falls naturally into it's own cut, to the shape of the individuals face shape
But it’s not just about thin and fine, mine is also so straight it shows layers like steps and won’t hold any bend. No hairdresser has been able to create a style on my hair so I have to keep it one mid/long length.
Funny, just last week I chopped 4 inches off my long, fine hair. Using thinning shears on the very tips is a great idea! There's so much support out there for "Curly Girls" with their own Curly-specialist-stylists; I say now is the time for "Fine Girls" to get the support we need, too! ❤✂
Justin, your instruction about texturizing is the very best I have ever been exposed to!!! I am 81 with very short, fine wavy hair that is thinner (of course!) than it used to be. Like you said, I have had extremely bad experiences with stylists who "thinned" my hair and ruined it. It took forever for it to grow out to the point where I could do anything with it. Therefore, I do not allow anyone to touch my hair with a "thinning" scissor. I truly wish I could have you cut my hair b/c I would totally trust you to do it right. :) B/c I have such bad haircuts from the salons, I now cut my own hair (shudder!), but do as good a job as most of them do. I have learned so much from your teaching and knowledge, so THANK YOU for sharing as you do! You are one in a million.

I LOVE all this information!!! I have fine hair (but a lot of it) and I’m 66 years old, but don’t look it or feel it. I have always been interested in the fabulous world of hair! I am very thankful to have found this channel. The best way to describe my hair right now is a long pixie, and I don’t EVER want to be caught with “grandma hair”!! I love the edgier hairstyles. I truly enjoyed your video. I actually have alopecia so I have fine and thin hair. I had a stylist tell me I needed layering so I went for it and I cried it was so bad. Looked like my hair was wacked and now I know why. I loved seeing you style the hair and it made so much sense and looked so nice. I am so afraid to let someone try again. Looks like if someone did it right it would more than likely help me. How do you find someone who really knows how to cut fine hair. So hard!
Wished your studio was near me , love- hate relationship all my life with fine straight hair. Decided to keep it in a pixie cut and give up. My stylist said I can carry pixie cuts better than most people. So are short cuts really not good for fine straight hair. BTW , I'm now in my 70s and my hair won the fight.

Hi Justin, this is by far one of your videos II found directly applicable to me. Your advice on layers and especially on texturizing is incredibly useful and is information that even as a layperson I think I could convey to my stylist. I'm still amazed at how you're able to style the mannequins hair so that it looks great regardless of which side you part her hair on. That ends-only texturizing is amazing. My new hairdresser scared me when she aggressively texturized the ends of my fine hair but it now has volume that it didn’t have before.
Each time I use your DeFrizz product (4th time now) I’m getting better and better results. Todays was perfect. I’ve learned that some products fail due to operator error. You really did make a great product 💕. My hair is thin and fine so I had to learn the amount (little) and application (spray it into my hands and apply) love it. Thank you for rescuing my hair. Great video. I have thin, fine hair that is COVID long because I haven't cut it since the pandemic began. It's definitely patchy at the ends. On top of this, I've been afraid to get layers for years b/c of a really bad experience. Very helpful. New subscriber.

Thank you so much for this video! My hair is fine AND thin. One of my biggest challenges is finding products that are light enough and actually make my hair fuller. However, I don't own a flat iron. I use a round brush when I blow dry. It looks from your videos that I need one, but it cannot be expensive. I'm going to check out your favorite. Thank you for linking your products below. Absolutely taking off some length will actually lift the hair up because if it's to long it will actually put extra weight on it therefore making it look flatter
Justin, my hair is gray, but just like that. Long and thin and uneven. I’ll be sure to try to give it a blunt bottom edge, but oh, how I wish you’d demonstrated how you actually did all the wonderful layering, just as you demonstrated using texturing on the tips. Now, suddenly, texturing makes sense, while layering is still a mystery, other than knowing it’s what my hair needs.... Again, bless you for your kindness in sharing with us. Totally agree that it’s frustrating to just hear ‘layering’ and that there is a right and a wrong way but not even 30 seconds of how you did said layering??? I haven’t been to a hairdresser since the lockdown and I’m currently cutting and coloring my own hair. Thank you so much for the tips on texturizing and products, but please do a follow up that explains layering for volume to complete the other half of the information needed for actually cutting in volume. Would you do a video and explain exactly what undercut is? I've had it done and that seems to work best for me but I've moved to another state and I'm unable to find someone who understands what I'm saying. The three most difficult things to find are a good doctor, a good dentist, and a great hair stylist. I absolutely hate the searching process!! Thank you so much and I love your videos!!

I really needed this info as I'm heading off to get my longish, thinish, silver-grey hair cut today, so great tips. Now I have one for you...when working with a dark 'model head' of hair, maybe you can try to wear a light shirt. A lot is lost from the viewer POV when the darkness of the hair blends right into the darkness of the shirt. Thanks again!
Wow, I really enjoyed this demonstration and it taught me a lot about getting volume in my super thin hair. It would be ideal if I could find a stylist who knows what they are doing! I think that I can cut my own hair and it would be a better or at least close by the way it is being cut now. Another issue is that it's impossible too find a REAL STYLIST! I will be turning 69 years young tomorrow and only one time in my life have I actually had my hair done by a person who didn't ask me what kind of hair cut did I want. Instead he educated me in what would look good on me and help improve the volume of my hair. Unfortunately he moved to New York. So sorry I didn't mean to write a book but maybe you could touch on the subject of trying too find a good hair stylist. Any chance you might pass through Ogden Utah? lol. I 👍🙂

I have fine, thinner hair and love long straight hair so I wear extensions. Without them, my hair looks much like the first mannequin. I keep it that length so the extensions blend well. But, Certainly can not go without them. I have found that doing the "sandwich method" is a bit too heavy and tends to break my hair. Trying the single weft method today. Can you do a video on extensions for fine hair along with any tips and tricks to making it look its best. Cut, style, products etc.. ?
That would help me as well. My hair is darker and longer now. Not sure if I want extensions. Seems like alot of maintenance but do I have the patience to keep growing my hair? Prob not.
In the past (before I grew out my layers, and grew the length of my fine hair), extensions worked so well on my hair. Zero damage when the extensions were taken out. Maybe the damage depends on the manner in which the extensions are put in, and the manner in which they’re removed, and how you take care of your hair when the extensions are in? I had an “extension specialist” who gave me specific instructions, which I followed to the T. Or maybe I was just fortunate , not sure .

I'd like to second this suggestion. Have been dealing with thinning on top and have gotten differing opinions from stylists about coloring my hair to camouflage. One told me I needed blonde highlights, a few years (and many highlights later) the other told me I need to darken near the roots. Didn't notice either method helping much, so now I'm letting my hair go back to natural strawberry blonde. I have been taking 10 mg biotin supplements and drinking collagen in my coffee for a few years and that seems to have helped me most - hair grows faster anyway... Would love to hear methods to make the top appear thicker. Thanks!
I have fine, thin hair and cry when I think of how it used to be fine but thick 😫 Your videos are great and I wish I could find a stylist I could trust. My hair is just past shoulder length and one layer. I’m too scared to allow the hairdresser to layer it, as it’s been botched in the past. I also like to be able to tie my hair back in hot weather and found that when it was layered years ago, that I had annoying bits that would escape and get in the way. Trying to pluck up the courage to go layered but have awhile to go yet 😬

The problem is I typically don’t know what manikin I’ll be using until I get to the salon and by that time I already have my shirt on. I think I just need to bring a few different shirts and do some outfit changes when I’m using multiple manikins etc. LOL. Thanks for the feedback for sure.
I'm new to this website but not to thin hair. I'm 75 and after knee replacement surgery was diagnosed with telogen effluvium possibly from the anesthesia or from COVID. My hair is falling out so badly that it backs up the drain in the shower and it's also breaking off. The only way I can wear it is tied back in a small ponytail. I know that's not ideal but it's so broken I can't wear it any other way. I'm buying the products and taking this video to show my stylist! There's a lot of us out there that need additional videos about thin hair, hair loss, should we only use cold air dryers or let it dry naturally, effect of drugs on hair, effects of illnesses on hair loss, etc. Thanks!
OMG, thank you for saying that you can STILL layer hair. I'm a child of the 80's, so BIG hair. I don't want my hair straight and limp, and all one length. I want my hair to have volume and movement, but my hair is fine and not so thick. It's wavy, but not curly. So it's alot of so-so. :( But every time I ask a stylist to layer my hair they look at me like I'm nuts.

I just found you Justin! Came guy what great techniques you gave for thinning hair.I am 64 and my hair started thinning in my early 60. So many bad h/c since then. My hair doesn't hold curl and very limp! This was awesome on the texturizing!!! Can't wait to try on my hair. When we can all get out to the salon I will show this video to my hairdresser. She will love seeing this. We are both hairdressers from the early 70. I don't cut no more because of arthritis. I wish I was taught this different things when I was a cosmotologists. This will be a fun day for us to experiment on my hair. After all it can't get worse( I don't think!!!). It's just hair that will grow back( I hope!). 😂. I have yet found a hairdresser that knows how to work with fine thin hair and I’m in my 60’s. First clue is when a beautician saids, your hair is so fine, hello I know. This tells me they don’t know how to work with my hair and the end result proves it
I NEED you to cut and color my hair! I’ve never had a stylist as knowledgeable. I’m even more hesitant after watching this video as I’m currently trying to find a new stylist. What should I say to the stylist when they ask what I want done so I get my points across which are the things you covered in this video? I’ve tried explaining to stylists that they have to be very careful and know what they’re doing when trimming my hair ESPECIALLY near my ears as the hair doesn’t grow well there and looks very string and thin if not cut correctly. Only one stylist has ever understood and trimmed my hair correctly around my ears and it took years for the stylist to figure out how to make it look not stringy and thin.

Thank you for this, very helpful, but I wish you had shown exactly how you did the cut to layer the hair. You went from discussing how useful the layering would be for achieving volume, to the hair already layered. The cut is important to know, isn't it. What angle did you use?
I feel so seen! Thank you for this short and informative video 🙌🏼 I have curly hair, yet very thin and coarse at the same time, and hair stylists always tell me that I shouldn't get layers because it makes my hair look thinner. But in my experience, whenever I heed that advice, I hate how I look because I end up with a chunk of big hair that looks hideous, especially at the ends. To some people, blunt cuts look chic and sleek but for my naturally curly (and unruly) hair, they just look and feel ugly. P.S. I'm excited to try those products you used! I just hope my hair will like them and not retaliate with even more frizz 😅
You should avoid dark backgrounds including T-shirts when teaching by video, the subject matter fades into the background making it impossible to see whats happening. Love your videos!

Thanks. I have "shyte" hair. Grows forward, fine, now grey and coarser than in my youth. I am learning a lot. ( In my next like I want curls and the ability to sing)
I have short, fine and oily hair. I’ve tried every product, that hairstylist recommend, and cuts they have suggested. I am at a loss, to a point, I just slick my hair back in a low bun. It seems there are alot of products and steps to achieve these results. Who has the time daily to do all of those? Why can’t there be one product? Sorry, just found this video.
@@justinhickox This cut, the layer cut for fine hair. You talk about how the way it is cut/layered.. you keep it full at the bottom and have internal layers to keep it bouncy.. so in essence, it isn't whispy or thin on the ends

I find most hairdressers still cut hair as if working on the doll,they got no confidence to trust their own eyes.never been to a dresser who got it.i like the idea Vidal sassoon had to cut the hair so that when you just shake it it falls naturally into it's own cut, to the shape of the individuals face shape
But it’s not just about thin and fine, mine is also so straight it shows layers like steps and won’t hold any bend. No hairdresser has been able to create a style on my hair so I have to keep it one mid/long length.
Funny, just last week I chopped 4 inches off my long, fine hair. Using thinning shears on the very tips is a great idea! There's so much support out there for "Curly Girls" with their own Curly-specialist-stylists; I say now is the time for "Fine Girls" to get the support we need, too! ❤✂

Justin, your instruction about texturizing is the very best I have ever been exposed to!!! I am 81 with very short, fine wavy hair that is thinner (of course!) than it used to be. Like you said, I have had extremely bad experiences with stylists who "thinned" my hair and ruined it. It took forever for it to grow out to the point where I could do anything with it. Therefore, I do not allow anyone to touch my hair with a "thinning" scissor. I truly wish I could have you cut my hair b/c I would totally trust you to do it right. :) B/c I have such bad haircuts from the salons, I now cut my own hair (shudder!), but do as good a job as most of them do. I have learned so much from your teaching and knowledge, so THANK YOU for sharing as you do! You are one in a million.

I truly enjoyed your video. I actually have alopecia so I have fine and thin hair. I had a stylist tell me I needed layering so I went for it and I cried it was so bad. Looked like my hair was wacked and now I know why. I loved seeing you style the hair and it made so much sense and looked so nice. I am so afraid to let someone try again. Wished your studio was near me , love- hate relationship all my life with fine straight hair. Decided to keep it in a pixie cut and give up. My stylist said I can carry pixie cuts better than most people. So are short cuts really not good for fine straight hair. BTW , I'm now in my 70s and my hair won the fight.

Your advice on layers and especially on texturizing is incredibly useful and is information that even as a layperson I think I could convey to my stylist. I'm still amazed at how you're able to style the mannequins hair so that it looks great regardless of which side you part her hair on. I’ll be sure to try to give it a blunt bottom edge, but oh, how I wish you’d demonstrated how you actually did all the wonderful layering, just as you demonstrated using texturing on the tips. Totally agree that it’s frustrating to just hear ‘layering’ and that there is a right and a wrong way but not even 30 seconds of how you did said layering??? I haven’t been to a hairdresser since the lockdown and I’m currently cutting and coloring my own hair. Thank you so much for the tips on texturizing and products, but please do a follow up that explains layering for volume to complete the other half of the information needed for actually cutting in volume. Would you do a video and explain exactly what undercut is? I've had it done and that seems to work best for me but I've moved to another state and I'm unable to find someone who understands what I'm saying. The three most difficult things to find are a good doctor, a good dentist, and a great hair stylist. I absolutely hate the searching process!! Thank you so much and I love your videos!!

I really needed this info as I'm heading off to get my longish, thinish, silver-grey hair cut today, so great tips. Now I have one for you...when working with a dark 'model head' of hair, maybe you can try to wear a light shirt. A lot is lost from the viewer POV when the darkness of the hair blends right into the darkness of the shirt. Thanks again!
Wow, I really enjoyed this demonstration and it taught me a lot about getting volume in my super thin hair. It would be ideal if I could find a stylist who knows what they are doing! I think that I can cut my own hair and it would be a better or at least close by the way it is being cut now. Another issue is that it's impossible too find a REAL STYLIST! I will be turning 69 years young tomorrow and only one time in my life have I actually had my hair done by a person who didn't ask me what kind of hair cut did I want. Instead he educated me in what would look good on me and help improve the volume of my hair. Unfortunately he moved to New York. So sorry I didn't mean to write a book but maybe you could touch on the subject of trying too find a good hair stylist. Any chance you might pass through Ogden Utah? lol. I 👍🙂

Exactly my own experience! Last time I got a haircut, I was embarrassed to be seen walking to my car.
I have fine, thinner hair and love long straight hair so I wear extensions. Without them, my hair looks much like the first mannequin. I keep it that length so the extensions blend well. But, Certainly can not go without them. I have found that doing the "sandwich method" is a bit too heavy and tends to break my hair. Trying the single weft method today. Can you do a video on extensions for fine hair along with any tips and tricks to making it look its best. Cut, style, products etc.. ?

That would help me as well. My hair is darker and longer now. Not sure if I want extensions. Seems like alot of maintenance but do I have the patience to keep growing my hair? Prob not.

In the past (before I grew out my layers, and grew the length of my fine hair), extensions worked so well on my hair. Zero damage when the extensions were taken out. Maybe the damage depends on the manner in which the extensions are put in, and the manner in which they’re removed, and how you take care of your hair when the extensions are in? I had an “extension specialist” who gave me specific instructions, which I followed to the T. Or maybe I was just fortunate , not sure .

I'd like to second this suggestion. Have been dealing with thinning on top and have gotten differing opinions from stylists about coloring my hair to camouflage. One told me I needed blonde highlights, a few years (and many highlights later) the other told me I need to darken near the roots. Didn't notice either method helping much, so now I'm letting my hair go back to natural strawberry blonde. I have been taking 10 mg biotin supplements and drinking collagen in my coffee for a few years and that seems to have helped me most - hair grows faster anyway...

My hair is just past shoulder length and one layer. I’m too scared to allow the hairdresser to layer it, as it’s been botched in the past.
I also like to be able to tie my hair back in hot weather and found that when it was layered years ago, that I had annoying bits that would escape and get in the way.
Trying to pluck up the courage to go layered but have awhile to go yet 😬

The problem is I typically don’t know what manikin I’ll be using until I get to the salon and by that time I already have my shirt on. I'm new to this website but not to thin hair. I'm 75 and after knee replacement surgery was diagnosed with telogen effluvium possibly from the anesthesia or from COVID. My hair is falling out so badly that it backs up the drain in the shower and it's also breaking off. The only way I can wear it is tied back in a small ponytail. I know that's not ideal but it's so broken I can't wear it any other way. I'm buying the products and taking this video to show my stylist! There's a lot of us out there that need additional videos about thin hair, hair loss, should we only use cold air dryers or let it dry naturally, effect of drugs on hair, effects of illnesses on hair loss, etc. Thanks!
OMG, thank you for saying that you can STILL layer hair. I'm a child of the 80's, so BIG hair. I don't want my hair straight and limp, and all one length. I want my hair to have volume and movement, but my hair is fine and not so thick. It's wavy, but not curly. So it's alot of so-so. :( But every time I ask a stylist to layer my hair they look at me like I'm nuts.

I just found you Justin! Came guy what great techniques you gave for thinning hair.I am 64 and my hair started thinning in my early 60. So many bad h/c since then. My hair doesn't hold curl and very limp! This was awesome on the texturizing!!! Can't wait to try on my hair. When we can all get out to the salon I will show this video to my hairdresser. She will love seeing this. We are both hairdressers from the early 70. I don't cut no more because of arthritis. I wish I was taught this different things when I was a cosmotologists. This will be a fun day for us to experiment on my hair. After all it can't get worse( I don't think!!!). It's just hair that will grow back( I hope!). 😂. I NEED you to cut and color my hair! I’ve never had a stylist as knowledgeable. I’m even more hesitant after watching this video as I’m currently trying to find a new stylist. What should I say to the stylist when they ask what I want done so I get my points across which are the things you covered in this video? I’ve tried explaining to stylists that they have to be very careful and know what they’re doing when trimming my hair ESPECIALLY near my ears as the hair doesn’t grow well there and looks very string and thin if not cut correctly. Only one stylist has ever understood and trimmed my hair correctly around my ears and it took years for the stylist to figure out how to make it look not stringy and thin.

I have curly hair, yet very thin and coarse at the same time, and hair stylists always tell me that I shouldn't get layers because it makes my hair look thinner. But in my experience, whenever I heed that advice, I hate how I look because I end up with a chunk of big hair that looks hideous, especially at the ends. To some people, blunt cuts look chic and sleek but for my naturally curly (and unruly) hair, they just look and feel ugly.

You should avoid dark backgrounds including T-shirts when teaching by video, the subject matter fades into the background making it impossible to see whats happening. Love your videos!

Thanks. I have "shyte" hair. Grows forward, fine, now grey and coarser than in my youth. I am learning a lot. ( In my next like I want curls and the ability to sing)

I have short, fine and oily hair. I’ve tried every product, that hairstylist recommend, and cuts they have suggested. I am at a loss, to a point, I just slick my hair back in a low bun. It seems there are alot of products and steps to achieve these results. Who has the time daily to do all of those? Why can’t there be one product? Sorry, just found this video.

@@justinhickox This cut, the layer cut for fine hair. You talk about how the way it is cut/layered.. you keep it full at the bottom and have internal layers to keep it bouncy.. so in essence, it isn't whispy or thin on the ends
