James, I totally agree. When I bought this album (here in the States) in 1969, I carried it around in my car for several months. Every where I would go and visit friends, I would insist that they listen to the great music on it. It is this record that inspired me to study sailing and later to sail many, many boats. It was a great gift from Procol Harum. My wife and I (who were dating when the record came out), still listen to this and other Procol Harum music. They were and are amazing!!!!
Kind of interesting that the two, the movie and song have nothing to do with each other, and yet, how well the emotion';s fit of sound and vision , it somehow works.
Hesperus Lyrics (fisher / reid) We'll hoist a hand, becalmed upon a troubled sea 'make haste to your funeral, ' cries the valkyrie We'll hoist a hand or drown amidst this stormy sea 'here lies a coffin, ' cries the cemetery, it calls to me And all for nothing quite in vain was hope forever tossed No thoughts explained, no moments gained, all hope forever lost One moment's space, one moment's final fall from grace Burnt by fire, blind in sight, lost in ire We'll hoist a hand, becalmed upon a troubled sea I fear a mighty wave is threatening me We'll hoist a hand, or drown amidst this stormy sea 'come follow after, ' cry the humble, 'you will surely see... ' But still for nothing quite in vain was hope forever tossed No moments gained, no thoughts explained, all hope forever lost One moment's space, one moment's final fall from grace Burnt by fire, blind in sight, lost in ire
There is at least one Internet reference crediting George Harrison with this (Procol Harum) music and lyric. Yes, George penned a tune of the same title, but I'm sorry (I love ya, George), Mr. Harrison could never write a song of such melody, chord progression, and lyric as this Fisher/Reid Procol Harum masterpiece. This work is as deep as the waters in which the Hesperus sank.
I've been fooled by that search myself. George is great and all but I had no interest at all to hear his song. That in it self speaks volumes. Procol Harum is like fine wine it get better with age.
It's just amazing to hear this beautiful composition again, this became my favourite song on the Salty Dog album years ago. Also Matthew Fisher composed, sung, and produced this song, produced the Salty dog album ( Keith Reid words genius ). And it was this song mostly, why I knew he was very capable of writing the organ melody to aWSoP.
A Salty Dog is a masterpiece. The Wreck Of The Hesperus is just an incredible song on one of the greatest albums ever.
James a salty dog e" un capolavoro! 🌅
It wasn't everyone's cup of tea when it was released but I loved it and still do
Exactly. A Salty Dog is One of this best Albums to P.H. (1969)

I agree James, I'm 74 and it's still one of my favorite albums
RIP Gary. You've been taken from us, but your memory, and your wonderful gifts to us, will Shine On Brightly forever.
Matthew Fisher wrote some amazingly beautiful songs....Keith Reid was a lyrical genius....A fantastic band....with a wealth of beautiful songs...
The video is compiled from Terry Gilliam's 'Adventures of Baron von Munchausen' film - brilliant!
Hey! Thank you for the answer! I always wanted to see that movie again! (last time was a looooong time a go!)
Kind of interesting that the two, the movie and song have nothing to do with each other, and yet, how well the emotion';s fit of sound and vision , it somehow works.
Not having these guys voted in...the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is invalid!
Rock and roll hall of Fame is a joke... ABBA is in it!
Procol Harum was one of the rock groups my parents actually liked to some extent.
This song was one of the reasons why, as was " A Salty Dog".
Matthew Fisher The genious..
Hesperus Lyrics
(fisher / reid)
We'll hoist a hand, becalmed upon a troubled sea
'make haste to your funeral, ' cries the valkyrie
We'll hoist a hand or drown amidst this stormy sea
'here lies a coffin, ' cries the cemetery, it calls to me
And all for nothing quite in vain was hope forever tossed
No thoughts explained, no moments gained, all hope forever lost
One moment's space, one moment's final fall from grace
Burnt by fire, blind in sight, lost in ire
We'll hoist a hand, becalmed upon a troubled sea
I fear a mighty wave is threatening me
We'll hoist a hand, or drown amidst this stormy sea
'come follow after, ' cry the humble, 'you will surely see... '
But still for nothing quite in vain was hope forever tossed
No moments gained, no thoughts explained, all hope forever lost
One moment's space, one moment's final fall from grace
Burnt by fire, blind in sight, lost in ire
Thank for this Lyrics
The visuals work brilliantly with this song that's been with me for decades.
This pairing really was masterfully done.
This and Seven Stones Genesis are so epic..... Mellotron Heaven

Nodouht

George did write a song with the same title, however.
@@Claytone-Records Yes, and I stated this in my initial posting of three years ago, Clayton.

As an ageing PH fan Wreck of the Hesperus is still a favorite *******

Extraordinario, magnífico, genial.
One of my favorite songs mixed with my favorite movie. Great
what a beautiful son based on the poem of Henry W Longfellow. a jewel
Was that poem allegorical? I've read it, but I haven't studied it. I kept feeling that there was a hidden meaning that I wasn't clued in on.
RIP "Münchausen" Conquistador Gary !
This video is awesome !
amazing song from the soundtrack of my youth
Beautiful comment, poignant and evocative like the song....
I ask the Baron, "Do you write fiction?" He says, "Write fiction? I am fiction?"
yet another Procol song whos lyrics could only have been written by Keith Reid!
this goes together so well!!!
Brilliant mashup! Thank you!
Fantastic
как красиво !!!
Great compilation!
Baron Munchhausen - One of the best films ever made and it has surprisingly little to do with Terry Gilliam!
Again, again!
I've got to find All This and More which always follows it!
Musicologists will be debating this a century hence.
For sure

Classical complexity, driving rhythm, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schuman, It's a masterpiece!
I think it wasnt Gary singing but it's a wonderful song ❤❤❤❤❤

Was this song ever performed live in concert
If it was, Matthew Fisher would have performed it, since he wrote the music. Great song and orchestration
Who is singing - it’s not Brooker…
Fisher
