Everything about this band’s perfomance is why I watch Tiny Desk. Unique and theatrical with an 11-piece band in a small space. Dahl was enthralling and bewitching. It’s “out there”, but that’s exactly what they’re going for. Can’t wait to check them out on the road!

Knowing the story of how Hailey Dahl was attacked and robbed really makes Madison even more emotional and impactful. So glad I found out about Sloppy Jane and the beautiful chaos they bring.

I love how uncomfortable people are with this band. It makes me love them more. Good art makes people react, and based on the very unkind and unthoughtful comments, they really succeeded! I’m so happy I checked this out and found my new favorite band!

Haley Dahl and Sloppy Jane have managed to do what few; if any, band has managed to do. Take the band 180 degree musically. From a punk band to the Avant Gard Art Rock of Willow to the ethereal sounds of Madison. And she doesn't disappoint. I thought I would miss the raw punk power of songs like "Glitte rSpitt" and "King Mitis" but the fragile melody of Madison are quite charming and beautiful on their own. Haley Dahl will be famous some day for something. A very creative young woman who's star will shine.

I think the negative comments stem from a place of creative undernourishment.

I only learned of Sloppy Jane less than a week ago, by way of a NYTimes piece where the writer spent time with the band, while they recorded Madison in a cave. I was very intrigued by the story and loved the idea of recording an album inside a cave.
Then I listened to the Madison album here on UA-cam. Words that came to mind were: dark, 'original', disturbing, witty, beautiful.... I've listened to the album now, a few times, and...there seems to be a 'story'....the mention of a policeman on her bumper (if I recall correctly)...the young girl that was murdered...and then she (the album protagonist) hiding from the man she killed with her car. And then there's the song about the horses, as well as the blue horse on the album cover. Very intrigued about the overall storyline...
In any case, when I first listened to this album in my apartment, instead of it just playing in the background while I, say, washed dishes (lol) ...and which is typical for me, as I listen to music CONSTANTLY...with Madison, I found myself planting myself in front of my PC, sitting there, and really LISTENING. I imagined myself in a performance space, listening to this, Live. And I was just dumbstruck at the genius of this music... I would describe the album as an aural work of art, from start to finish.
Now having said that, after listening to Madison, I checked out other Sloppy Jane music. It's hard to categorize (as I suppose Madison would be), but the other music I heard was dark, frenetic, and while with a cursory listen it may seem like 'garbage' to some, it was clear to me that the sometimes off-sounding chords were all very intentional. I'm not a fan of 'weird' or in-your-face music or bands and who are this way, just for the sake of it. Sloppy Jane is not 'simply' strange. There is a clear intelligence, forethought and creative genius behind it.
I am now officially obsessed. ;-) I only came across this literally just-posted-today Tiny Desk concert by Sloppy Jane (which, BTW, I was elated to see) only because I was on UA-cam, yet again, trying to find more videos of Sloppy Jane and their other works...
