“Every Breath You Take” is described as “very, very sinister” by Sting, who wrote and composed the song. Sting wrote the song after his separation from his then wife Frances Tomelty. Sting himself insists the song is about the obsession of a lost lover, and the jealousy and surveillance that follows. While many misinterpret the song to be a love song, it is quite the opposite. After listening to the lyrics carefully, many people have realized that the song is actually told from a stalker’s point of view, watching and obsessing over the woman he loves - watching her every move, every breath, every step, and every word. He then asks her why she couldn’t see that she belongs to him. The words can be very unsettling to some.
