Everything looks great! I planted a 2 foot tall winecraft black just 2 years ago and its 9 feet tall! Amazing shrub but needs room for sure or just limb it up and underplant.
I just purchased the Bit of Honey also. Really looking forward to enjoying it next year. I have a few Tuscan Gold Heliopsis currently, and they provide so much color for such a long time! Beautiful, easy plants.
Your garden is beautiful. What you have accomplished in such a short time shows some hard work! I have eliminated sweet potato vine from my containers as they are just bullies. Pretty....but bullies nonetheless. Thank you Matthew!
You might want to transplant the Winecraft Smokebush before it gets huge lower branches. I planted 2 ( I moved one last Spring) in the fall of ‘22. The one I didn’t get transplanted is at least 10’ tall now with thick branches at the bottom. Even my husband said it’s too big for him to dig. I will have to keep it trimmed down every year. They have a strange look to them with those branches shooting straight up.
You are such a brilliant artist. With every flower and plant you place a stroke of artistry. Your gardeners are a brilliant picture of love, color and growth. just a lovely place to be. Such a blessing.❤️✝️🕊. 🌺🌻🌸🌼
❤We weeded/cleaned out the front garden last weekend and my husband made me laugh saying “Hey, there’s another azalea in here!” 😂 I bought several small bushes at Lowe’s for $4.50 last autumn so he asked what I was going to bring home this weekend. Definitely more daffodils, but thinking about a few more perennial flowers. 😊
I love that Caryopteris….haven’t heard of that Sapphire one. I have 2 Dark Knights and yes the pollinators love them. Also planted several Sunflower seed types so they have something in the autumn to feed on.
We have almost completed our Polywood collection, Matthew. I have the Adirondack chairs and small table, 2 rockers and small table, the dining table with bench and chairs, and 2 of the Vineyard swings all in slate gray. I got a piece each season and we absolutely love them. Took me years but totally worth it. A bucket of warm soapy water and the hose each spring and they’re clean and ready to go in a matter of minutes. As we age, we didn’t want the yearly scrub and paint maintenance. Also, wanted to let you know I found the Eclipse Hydrangea this week from First Editions. The foliage color is gorgeous.
Hi Matthew! Your gardens are looking so good, as usual. It's hard to believe you got so much accomplished in one year. I like the bench swing on the swing set. I'm looking forward to seeing your gardens after you pull out some plants and add new ones. Thank you so much for sharing!
Your gardens are beautiful! It’s amazing how much has changed in the short time you’ve been in your new home. We’re in southern Illinois…our growing conditions are similar so I thought I’d pass on this info. My heucheras have an issue with heaving out of the ground. Upon some investigation, they will do that due to freezing and thawing during the cold months. The suggestion was made to add extra soil around the crown and extra mulch to help combat the issue. Interesting enough, the heuchera I have planted in landscape rocks have never done this. It’s such a frustration since mine seem to die after heaving out of the soil…and they can be very costly to replace. Thanks for all your garden updates!
Thank you Matthew. Yes cooler weather is on the way, in fact it feels downright frigid this morning, of course it’s not but after the heat it feels COLD 🥶 🌺💚🙃
It's always enjoyable to walk around your garden with you. I had to chuckle at your comment about wanting to do more maintenance. My current garden is three years old so some of the perennials have matured. I was walking around some of the beds this morning saying to myself that next year I should focus on deadheading and cutting back the plants that I have over the season, But my next thought was, no, you will probably take on new projects -- there is still so much plantable space! You've made enormous progress -- I look forward to seeing how it all turns out.
I have been dealing with a lot of yellow jackets this year! The news said it's because of the drought! It makes it really hard to get in the garden with them flying all around you! Ive been stung twice! Your garden looks heavenly, Mathew!
Matthew do you plan to use cardboard under your mulch by the swingset? I bet that would really help accomplish your goal with the grass. Wish I was your neighbor, I’d love to come help you weed!!! What an amazing accomplishment you’ve made in the last year! Can’t wait to watch more of this journey😊
I used to, but because we primarily have fescue I’ve discovered that a thick layer of wood chips will just kill the grass anyway, so I don’t waste the time using cardboard or contractors paper.
My winecraft black is 8 ft tall. Not as wide. I cut it back to 3 ft in the late winter, and it puts on 5 ft with two pushes, one right away in spring, then another mid summer.
Wow did you show us that chitalpa grown up? I must have missed that somehow. I would love to see that since I just got two delivered yesterday and would like to plant them in the right place right off
Omg thank you! I watched I must have been distracted so glad I watched again. I wonder if there were more than one chitalpa planted there. Definitely not going where I planned. I have the laced up elderberry too. It’s still quite young I think next year is leap year 😍 my limelight prime was a weepy mess this year definitely not the highlight I hoped in that bed. Thank you! Love your channel.
There may have been more than one there, but I’ll tell you the ones at Spring Meadow Nursery out front that probably got more sun were even bigger. It definitely needs its own space.
@@SouthernersGarden oh bigger still than the two in the video? I’m in NC hope that doesn’t mean bigger still. I have very little shade here. We’ll see I think I have decided on a back corner of our lot to block the neighbors garden mess and a power pole somewhat.
Mathew have you or any viewers been dealing with jumping worms ? They look like regular earthworms but are much more active thus the name jumping worms. They have turned my soil into a granular consistency and I hope that will not kill my hostas. As I find them I kill them. Any info will be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you in advance. Have a great day gardening friends .😊 Matthew your property has come a long way in a short time !!!
@@SouthernersGarden I was watching Erin the impatient gardener she is trialing pine straw mulch in one of her last few videos. I thought she mentioned it was helping with the jumping worms.
Is that caryopteris sterile or at least low seed set? I bought an unbranded one locally at Bern's almost a decade ago and removed it 2 years later. I am still finding starts all over my yard, up to 30ft away. I let one grow this year but would love to replace it with one that isn't so generous!
If I knew, they wouldn’t have died. 😆 It was all the same variety and they had been on the decline since we had so much rain a month ago. But, I don’t know the cause of they were gorgeous before then.
i live in dayton OH and I love northwind perennial grass (switch grass). it looks beautiful in winter and does not flop.
Everything looks great! I planted a 2 foot tall winecraft black just 2 years ago and its 9 feet tall! Amazing shrub but needs room for sure or just limb it up and underplant.
Brown’s Nursury auction next Saturday for another load of trees! I was there yesterday and they are packed full and lined up!
I don’t think I can afford to go this year after last year. 😂 I went a couple weeks ago and got a couple items before they put them in the auction.
I'm in awe of what you've accomplished in 2 years: it looks amazing. Yay you!
He’s only been here for 1 years!! Can you believe it?
I LOVE Polywood furniture!

Caryopteris sapphire surf!!! Pollinator magnet 😍. It all looks so good. More trees definitely . Windbreaks, privacy and shade.
Matthew, your gardens are beautiful, and the changes in such a short time completely blow my mind. Blessings to you and your loved ones. ~Margie😍

It just looks spectacular. You have really done an amazing job. Looking forward to what comes next! Thank you!
Invincible Wee White Hydrangeas would look great in your landscape 💚
Not a big fan of them. They burn really easily. I had 20 or so at my last garden.
Here in southern Indiana, we’ve gone 35 days without any rain. It is so so dry! Praying for rain!! ☔️
I love that Caryopteris….haven’t heard of that Sapphire one. I have 2 Dark Knights and yes the pollinators love them. Also planted several Sunflower seed types so they have something in the autumn to feed on.
That “red’ hibiscus is stunning! Such a saturated color😍😍
Isn’t it though!? Such a nice color outside of the red color I don’t particularly like. Mixes well with other softer colors and pastels I think.
We had a few days that were acceptable but today was 87 and kinda of humid. 72 is my gem! Blessings 💞🙏🏻

I’ve not had that issue, but I plant most of mine in spring so they have plenty of time to settle in and would recommend the same for heuchera.
Thank you for sharing your amazing gardens. There is no doubt your artistry in design is breathtaking!
Very creative adding the porch swing to the swing set! It looks great not to mention practacle❤

When you say you need to fertilize your hydrangeas-what type of fertilizer do you use?

I’m not sure and I couldn’t find anything online about it being sterile. You can trim off the seed heads/blooms in fall though.
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden thanks for checking! I'll see how it does for you! I'm also interested in how the abelia does!
