I have a funny story about Close Encounters. The entire family went to see it when it came out. I was 5. When we got home my 12 year old brother said I rate it an 8/10. Nice well selected and considered. I just got a new 12 string recently and one thing that is obvious to get the best out of it is to be careful with the strings you play, sometimes you only need a few, you have to pick your full strums and this kind of arpeggiating and note picking really enhances the sounds in a way you don't need so much on a six especially if like me you mainly play rhythm, thanks enjoyed that

Good info as usual. Takes some playing time to get fingers hardened a little more but worth it for many songs. I have a Taylor 552CE with X bracing ( pre V brace). Love it, but do you recommend tuning it down a half/full step to help prevent neck damage over the long haul. I see some threads that say it isn't necessary (anymore) but, you are the master, so what say you ? I bought a replacement bone saddle from Taylor ( pre compensated). That , I believe , improved the tone.

Great lesson. I need to watch this one several times. I could see your fingers moving to match the tabs, which is a good thing. I don’t know why tab is hard for me. It seems upside down and backwards. Maybe I’m dyslexic?
I understand what you're saying Randy. Tabs do pay homage to traditional music in that the lower lines represent the lower strings rather than physically representing where they appear on the guitar. Reading music and tab is like learning to type. Once you get it down your fingers will just act on instinct. You do need to put some time and repetition in though and like anything else you have to ask yourself what the best use of your time is. Thanks again. -Mark

Hey Larry. I've done over 100 12 string videos and I haven't done one on Genesis yet. I know , I know, huge miss. Every time I start digging in, I don't know how to best represent Mike and Steve's great work on the 12. The mid 70s Hackett period has more riffy stuff that would be easier to play excerpts of but I really like the earlier stuff better. Everything before Lamb. Maybe I'll do a Covering the Classic of the Musical Box. That would be ambitious. Or at the very least, a top 10 12 string players of all time and feature Mike and Steve. For those of you who are somewhat new remember that it is okay to play the riff you are learning slowly. There is nothing that you can play up to speed that you cannot play slowly. Playing slowly while learning helps you to soldify your playing technique and develop good habits. You will be playing up to speed before you know it!

It's incredibly well arranged, and it's performed by a 6-yo girl! I'm sure the layout and arrangement were done by adults, but it's still incredible. Her technique would do any serious classical guitarist proud; look out for this gal in the years to come!! Fred
