Having read No Longer Human before The Setting Sun, I couldn't help but notice some similarities. And by that I don't mean just thematic similarities. The character of Oba from No Longer Human shares a striking similarity with Naoji from The Setting Sun. And we already know, Oba is half and half based on Dazai (and his own experiences). It was a very pleasant surprise to find out that this book too had a lot of autobiographical elements. Another thing I really loved was the characterization. (Spoilers ahead), but as I was finishing the book I was in love with every single character and how distinct they were, EXCEPT NAOJI! And with only two chapters left Dazai inserted so much into that character that I was left baffled. He was a true master. Thanks for these amazing reviews. I always look forward to them after finishing a book. Keep it up

Just finished the book and i just realized Japan is "the land of rising sun" But the title is "the setting sun". It clearly show us how degraded kazuko and his aristocrats family post war.

Nice video mate. Love Dazai too. Just quick to mention that "shogunate" is actually an English word, not Japanese. So the end of it is pronounced like "caliphate".

  • @nochumlevitan2504

I think Naoji is the characterization of Dazai. I really loved Kazuko as a character because she was very reliable and yet just like Japan going through a transformation was dealing with the change of her morals. I loved the ending where I think Kazuko's child is the representation of the new Japan. There is a film of the life Osamu Dazai and after reading this one of the characters who is supposed to be the woman Osamu took the dairy from is Kazuko and I love now looking at the connection. I wonder which lines were the actual mistresses?

i believe 'shogunate' is an english word combining the japanese word for commander (shogun) and latin suffix -ate to describe that specific political system/period in japan so it should be pronounced as sho-gun-nate :) anyway i love this review!! dazai is one of my favourite japanese authors and i love the setting sun, just found out your channel recently and im already binge watching all your videos :D

I have been trying to get more into Japanese literature. So far I have read Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood and Natsume Soseki's Sanshiro. I was thinking about reading either The Setting Sun or No Longer Human next. Do you happen to have a recommendation for which one I should start with?

    • @TheArtisanGeek

Can anyone explain the ending with her wanting MC to tell his wife about her baby being naojis? Is it because she is mad about her brothers suicide she wants to start drama ?
