    With a dyson sphere, you can take the entire energy output of a star and direct it into one beam at one ship.
    They may brag about their super shields, but they canna change the laws of physics, laddie.

      Fun modern science fact. Someone discovered that if you crank up the intensity of a laser enough it will start interfering with itself.
      Photons have mass, and at high enough density they'll spoil the focus of a laser. On top of that, if you cram enough energy in a given volume of space vacuum itself becomes less and less transparent, meaning that the laser literally blocks itself out at some point.

      no dyson sphere dyson swarm,scientists have idea how to do it,basically if all of humanity of today put all resources into collaborating to do this we could send one mount everest worth of mass towards mercury and make a factory of solar pannels that swarm around the sun,previous solar pannels built would have their energy used to build more thus 2 becomes 4 4 becomes 8 and 8 becomes 16 and so on,within short span of time mercury would be dismantled and we would have made insane leap in amount of energy we can use as a civilization,but its stil not as extreme as a dyson sphere it operates about 70% less efficient than a dyson sphere but its stil good enough and far more plausible to build

    • @xotos4568
      @xotos4568 2 місяці тому +9

      Expensive in the sense that a warship is not expected to be a total loss. you can recover the wreck or it can simply flee, or actually win and do its mission. a missile, even if it does it job will be completely destroyed and thus the FTL engine will be lost.

    • @drewgilbertson
      @drewgilbertson 2 місяці тому +3

      @xotos4568 maybe, but without more info I would have to assume that when hundreds of thousands of ships are fighting, some FTL engines will be damaged beyond repair or salvage. So if the normal cost of sieging a planet is a fleet or two worth of ships, then it becomes very economical to punch 1 FTL stealth missile into the planet's crust and literally scorch the earth. (Assuming you don't want the planet afterwards).
      I guess my problem is with the 'inexplicable' part of that sentence.

      I can see it, and honestly i wish more sci fi writers did.
      Compared to sci fi less grounded in scientific realism, With the kinds of tech we either know 100% is possible or have good reason to think it is, a 1 system civilization just reaching K2 on the Kardeshev scale would easily dog walk galaxy spanning sci fi civilizations.
      Like a system with a full dyson swarm, a mercury> size matrioska brain and the proper infrastructure to have orbital rings, signal/power/laser relays built on automated resource extraction and manufacturing would have little issue going to war with a surprising amount of galactic scale civilizations and at worst being forced to defend only, and at best crippling the civilizationn without needing a fleet at all.
      Doesnt matter how many death stars or other ridiculous super weapons are used when an RKM gonna do the same thing anyway practically speaking

    • @erika002
      @erika002 2 місяці тому

      @IanHarrison-n9m I actually expected for the aliens in the story to outmaneuver them (because FTL) or at least has a slight edge in weapons as they can use gravity and has an understanding of plasma more. You know, like Halo. UNSC getting beaten by the covies because they simply had shields and a faster Slipspace Drive. Or...well, Fanfics where the UNSC always beating the Citadel Council Races over the over-reliance and limits of Mass Relays and Mass Effect Drives where it can't even go beyond a few systems until it needs refueling like an old guzzler diesel truck.
      Unfortunately for the aliens though, it would seem that the level of tech humanity had already surpassed everyone else in scale (among other tech field) that their disadvantages in speed and lack of knowledge in 3 specific fields just simply doesn't matter anyway as they can simply overpower the aliens lmao. Humanity are already at least nearly the levels of the Forerunners from Halo in the story, at least in terms of megastructure scaling.
      Skill Issue for the aliens lmao.

      We didn't have FTL at first contact, but we obviously got it in the decades between first contact and the 6 months in point of the war. Whether through trade, figuring it out entirely by ourselves now we know it's possible, reverse engineered it off of some pirate with a FTL capable ship who tried messing around in one of our systems, a spy stealing the plans off of some other species, or getting our hands on some intact drives on day one of the invasion and figuring it out fast enough to launch Relativistic Kill Missiles that'll land within 6 months of the war starting.

      They do have FTL tech, but that's was currently the only widespread reverse-engineered tech. you have some cultural factors of what they consider superior tech, and some actual superior tech like shielding, faster FTL, and better fusion tech because of shielding tech(a big factor for fusion is neutron radiation wich can't be contained by magnets, nor can photons. if a magic shield could stop both, you can have way higher energy density without melting your reactor.) honestly didn't think further than that. not that good of a writer and this is one shot so I didn't put too much thought into it.
