What you don't understand is Target and Walmart didn't even exist when I was young. They are actually both relatively new store chains. So many store chains existed before them like Kmart and Two Guys and Zayres and Grants. Before these was Woolworths and 5&10 stores.
Agreed! This is exactly how the stores evolved in my area in the past 20 to 30 or so years. The groceries were the newest iteration of their business. Walmart had tire centers long before grocery items.
Also the section you were in that you called "the American section" is actually a seasonal section. Might have 4th of July stuff for a while, then turns into back to school aisle, then Halloween, etc. I don't know any store in America that has an "American section."
Target is a "posh" store for middle the shopper. Walmart is one step below and a little cheaper. There are many stores to shop at depending on where you live and what you want.
Regional chains can be better. Meijer is a chain in the Midwest - it's as big as a Walmart superstore, the quality is on the level of Target and the grocery section is as big as a full sized grocery store with competative prices. So much cleaner and more organized than your average Walmart. But where you are definitely makes a difference in Walmarts.
I would rather spend a few more dollars at Target than enter ANY Walmart....especially near us in Maryland. The Walmarts around here are cluttered and a bit seedy. Targets are always easy to navigate, aisles are never clogged with stacks of stuff blocking your way, and the prices are still very reasonable.
The joke, „I don’t know why men go to bars to look for women, go to target. The female to male ratio is 10/1 and they’re already looking for things they don’t need“

Can't wait for you to do a Wegmans supermarket. Hopefully Dewitt (Syracuse), Johnson City (Binghamton) or Pittsford (ochester) in NYS so you can see their largest and best stores.
here's a tip for tourists. when I lived and worked overseas as a military contractor, we would get a month off to come back to the States. while in the States, we would do a massive shopping trip for things we needed or wanted back on the island we were living on at the time. all that stuff wouldn't have fit in our suitcases so instead we boxed them up and shipped them via a shipping company like FedEx or UPS. it cost somewhat, but it was much cheaper than trying to fly with the stuff as the airline cost for weight is crazy. It was usually around 150 lbs of stuff in 3 or 4 boxes to divide the weight up and make the smaller boxes easier to ship that one large box. you can do the same and ship it back to the UK.
VAT might also negate doing that. I don't know if you were shipping it onto a base, but military discounts won't apply to tourists. I do know that some ppl have shipped things when they were traveling to the US but it is stupid expensive especially when you factor in insurance etc. But I do agree that it's worth looking into just in case. Edit: I just checked on loose estimates from the US to the UK for a 20lb (9kg) costs about $50 - $200 depending on which shipping co you use and actual locations and shipping timeline requirements. (a week or less costs more than 3 or more weeks). These are thru' standard UPS, FedEx, DHL, IPL and others. It may be worth looking into if you have actual factual locations and weights etc.

The "massive" box of chips is actually a box full of small bags intended for school lunches. That would be a big seller to parents, such as myself, who always prepared their kids' lunches every morning, rather than have them eat the horrible school lunches.
I wish you could see what happens when Halloween and Christmas merchandise comes out. Food, drinks, decor, music, movies, crafts, clothes, and on and on. It's huge.
FUN FACT: one of the only Hollywood films that has featured a Target store was an entire movie that took place inside of a Target store called "Career Opportunities " in 1991 featuring Jennifer Connelly. I was 10 years old at that time. So I remember it. Enjoy
When my wife & I went to the UK (back then we were still dating), she found out that her favorite face moisturizer brand had some new products that was only available at "Boots". So... She took me there & she found what she wanted. About 1 1/2 years later those "Boots" products became available at Target.
I can’t live anywhere without a Target, Costco or Trader Joe’s. Those are my faves. You guys looked super happy in Target. 😺 Halloween & Christmas stuff at Target is pretty cool - maybe you can check it out during one of those holidays.
James I wish the two of you would have gone to a Sam's Club while you were here. They are sort of like a Cosco, but they are owned by Walmart. They are a warehouse type of store where you can buy in bulk packages. You must purchase a membership to shop there.

This was very relaxing to watch :)
“It’s the America section” 😂😂 more than likely it was a patriotic holiday, Memorial Day is end of May, or July 4th, both holidays feature patriotic swag.
I loved watching you in the USA. Listening to your comments put things in proper perspective for me. I've lived in the USA all my life and we don't realize that not everyone has the variety/choices that the USA has. Maybe this is why some people think Americans are snooty. We are just used to choices.
Word to the wise , never take the wife to target 😂
Enjoy
Correction "Starring" Jennifer Connelly.
The peanut butter and pretzel you're thinking of is called TAKE 5
My Man Archie bringing the views LETS GO
I hope you two will come down here to Orlando Florida, for a visit.
When my wife & I went to the UK (back then we were still dating), she found out that her favorite face moisturizer brand had some new products that was only available at "Boots". So... She took me there & she found what she wanted.
About 1 1/2 years later those "Boots" products became available at Target.
I love Target when I have a little extra cash than normal 😂. And want to shop stress-free.
20:00 I feel like ever home with a toddler has one of these red and yellow cars.
CHEEZ BALLS!!!
