Funnily enough, if more people played the German 29, it'd probably dominate over all else, and that's without it's R73's like it's supposed to have, and with a fucked airframe lol. That less overall mass and less fuel makes a major difference.

I can see why it can be unappealing, but as long as you have a good counter chance its decently fun, more fast paced than lower tiers
i think it's not fun with so many people in a match. But when you got the opportunity to focus on one single target at a time it'll be fun, even with missiles that have extremely good irccm

Don’t sprint into the furball right away and it is the most fun I’ve ever had in thunder
The problem you have is that you are thinking about it like if this was just a continuation of prop gameplay, it's not every era the game changes massively.
Reserve has slow monoplanes and biplanes and while nobody really spends much time on the reserved tier the fact is that it's all about positioning, aircraft cannot take very high speeds and are all quite similar in capabilities, this means That energy fighting and boom and zoom tactics are out of the window instead It's all about agile dog fighting and turn fighting.
Standard prop tier is about finding your niche and mastering a way of fighting, be it boom and zoom tactics with tremendously well-armed and fast but unagile Gun birds like the P-47, Fw-190, Typhoon etc....
Energy fighting with powerfully accelerating, Energy maintaining resilient front line fighters with Decent armaments like the P-51, hurricane, Bf-109 etc...
Or turn fighting with Fragile and lightly armed but fast and extremely nimble aircraft at seemingly dance in the air as if the laws of physics didn't apply to them like the Spitfire, Zero, La etc...
And heavily armed interceptors That sacrifice a lot of capabilities in order to bring forward apocalyptic levels of firepower.
And even in this categories there are sub specializations depending on your preference of altitude and the type of fight you want.
Late props are all about accuracy and refinement of skill, by this point there are no turn fighters, there are no boom and zoomers there are only energy fighters, all super props are so similar incapabilities that by this point the only major differences are the types of armament however there is not a single one that is not absolutely lethal, this is I feel the ultimate arena for gun fighters and the tier you might find the most fun.
1st gen jets, it's all about learning The gunfighters alchemy, learning to exchange Speed for turning, learning how to maintain energy, It doesn't matter what you fly You will die as soon as anything hits you Jets are incredibly fragile so it's all about learning the exchanges of energy in an instinctual level to dominate your opponent.... unless you bought the SU-11 then it's Just a seal Clobers Paradise, seriously that thing has the propulsion and acceleration of a Mig-15 with the turning capabilities of a meteor this is the most stupidly overpowered premium in the game, And I'm including the bull crap heavy autocannon on the Russian ground tree.
2nd gen jets, this one is all about learning the art of the ruse, and the art of super high speed dog fighting, fake out your enemy, cut their options and trap them for the kill, everyone is The flash running around with a shotgun, the trick to winning at this tier is learning how to force your enemy to make mistakes.
3rd gen jets: Yeah I have absolutely no clue, It is by far the tier I have played the most but I'm still not sure what is going on, I almost feel like it's a freaking drunken bar fight, like seriously half the people are dumping radar guided missiles and infrareds and the other half are F-5s drakens and Kafirs turn fighting everything they see before law darting, It's pure chaos, there is no rhyme or recent to it and I absolutely love it.
Top tier, this one is all about observation, You are an Apex predator in a shallow pool full of apex predators, Your accuracy doesn't matter, your well tuned twitch second skills don't matter, what does is your awareness and your strategic thinking, everything literally everything can rip you apart in a micro second and so can you, In order to win you must familiarize yourself with your tools and those of your enemy more so than ever before, If you tunnel vision you will be ripped apart, if you overextend and allow yourself to get surrounded you will be ripped apart, if you stop being vigilant no matter where you are you will be ripped apart, But the same applies to your enemies, learn the map learn the terrain learn to hide, strike when unexpected, move fast flank and strike, never stop moving never get full of yourself, there is always a missile with your name on it, Don't think of the game like a brawl think of it like a chest match, The enemy might have better skills than you but That doesn't matter if they are looking in the wrong direction, top tier is a game of strategy, your aircraft is not just a flying gun any more it's an extremely advanced and incredibly lethal weapons platform And you are the weakest link, so you must learn how to use every tool in your belt to out play your opponent.
This is why top tier is so popular even though a lot of the more traditionalist players think it's boring, It's because top tier is not the kind of game for you, it's not a dog fighting extravaganza, no It's a strategy game With your commander being represented by a beautifully rendered 3D model of your favorite fighter jet.
I personally prefer 3d gen since I love and thrive in the absolute chaos, But I can certainly see why so many people love top tier.
