  • In this video I attempt to give a more reasoned and objective stand
point on a Fragrance house that is surrounded by controversy.
Is Black Tie good and more importantly, what is the issue that seems to be keeping Jeremy Fragrance's brand from reaching it's full potential?

Im so tired of these youtubers sucking off eachother. "this would be scent 4.5/5 for 60-70 dollar fragrance easily" when Jeremy by himself has said that its overpriced. So you basicly give it a best rating "presentation is cheap" yes we've heard it all before. The only issue with that is, Jeremy IS making millions and won't be bothered to listen to criticism. If you have good constructive criticism, it'll fall on deaf ears because it is still successful. In my opinion, I think Jeremy told Alberto Morillas ideas he wanted in a fragrance and when Alberto completed his work, Jeremy was probably afraid to say no to him and be assertive.

    • @balazs7235
      @balazs7235 3 роки тому +35

@@jsvalina3503 But frankly you are missing the point. Or Jeremy does...
With what he established his brand on is, a specific scent for a specific occasion.
Office- A work scent that should work on a daily basis in every work situation. We all work, and we can all appreciate a nice work scent.
Date- A scent that is specific to dates, meet ups or clubbing. It is something we at least for a little while do.
Black Tie- It is a bit more specific, but if one goes to an interview or to something very official, perhaps a business meeting. It is appreciated that one has a fragrance “custom” made for this occasion. In everyone’s life there is a certain time when this would be needed.
What these fragrances have in common (not mentioning all the other ones but should be included as well) is a very wide audience. Including EVERYONE. His aim is to have everyone wear his fragrances due to how specific they are for their specific occasion. And that everyone includes the general public who find fragrances that cost upwards of $100 stupid and wasteful. That means even if Jeremy’s fragrances were $100 each. They are so specific that ideally you should buy the rest to fit the occasion perfectly, thus leaning into the $500 territory. While your everyday man wouldn’t mind wearing that same fragrance no matter the occasion. In terms of marketimg you have to take into account these aspects. Jeremy has to think that one would buy all of his fragrances because they are very good in different situations. Here comes the problem that prevents the brand to reach the general public no matter how genius the idea is. Price. As mentioned in the video, non-Jeremy fans, when they see the price, will instantly close that window on their screen, and proceed to buy Dior Sauvage. Because that will in fact satisfy every occasion and is waaay cheaper.
With what the brand tries to be, it is very hypocritical to charge such high prices when the brands focus it aiming to reach a wide audience and be widely available.
The other problem with Fragrance One is the fact that they try to act niche, but will cheapen the brand with heavy discounts and a very cheaply made and looking bottle. It is unacceptable to sell a fragrance that costs $120 and $400 in the same bottle design with the same cheap materials. It’s the juice what counts and what you pay for. But we buy with our eyes. If the bottle looks nice and sophisticated, you best believe I am buying it for $400 if I like it that much. However, if the bottle looks very cheap and still charges the same $400 price tag, I will not even give it a smells and just skip over. He should have different bottles design for different fragrances. Because you are not just buying another one of the same fragrances. You are buying another fragrance from the same house that is triple the price. If the prices were in the same range, I would be more okay with it. Though, this is not good enough.
I am not ranting on Jeremy, because I like him and what he’s doing! But he should realize the potential he would reach had he made the fragrances more affordable and more aimed on what it is actually trying to be. Accessible by the public to accomodate everyone, anywhere.

I have Green Irish Tweed, Viking, Journey Man, Scandal, Beau de Jour, and Vanille Fatal. The most I've paid for any of them is $185 for Viking. I love Jeremy, he's the one who got me into fragrances but I don't have any of his stuff because they're too damn high. The most I'll pay for a fragrance is $200 if it's quality. Lalique is up there in quality with all the niche heavy hitters and they don't charge the prices Jeremy is asking for. Mr Smelly's fragrance is a niche brand and higher quality than anything Jeremy has put out and it's $110 and it should be more.

I bought the bottle for $70, used 10% and sold the bottle for $90. So I think that shows that $120 for a full bottle is exactly what it should be priced at. I like Jeremey Fragrance. What a superb video. I don't care for people's seemingly personal hatred for Jeremy, it all gets tiresome. I've seen too many people unable to give a fair and balanced view of his fragrances because they're unable to separate their opinion/feelings of him.
There's not a single thing you said in this video that I could disagree with. Unfortunately I did see the video in which Jeremy's justification for such a high price point was, and I quote, "because I can". It is indeed frustrating because it's a solid line if you're only taking into account the scent itself. It is strange that he is fixated on charging these sort of prices especially given that he has openly said in numerous videos that he could charge less but the likes of Creed get away with it so why can't he. Anyway, superb video George, you nailed it.

The thing about Jeremy's pricing is that it's really just terrible marketing. In reality, he'll be selling a lot of his products at half the marked prices through deals. The reduced price, while still relatively expensive isn't so absurdly unrealistic. I don't think we're really that outraged by the actual cost the consumer pays at checkout, but more about the blatant budget brand strategy of significantly hiking up prices, only to reduce them.

Great video as always. The big problem for me is that the damage has already been done. If he slashes the price now, everyone who has bought it at the higher price will feel cheated and likely not repurchase at the lower price, plus it makes him look greedy if he's making a profit selling at £100 when it was sold for £400. Pricing is so important to get right, he either needs to rebrand entirely or come out with a much more affordable budget line.
Haig whisky did a similar thing with Club and Clubman. They released a cheap grain whisky, Haig Club, in a flashy blue bottle with David Beckham endorsement and charged £45 for it. They couldn't sell it as it was a cheap grain whisky for £45, so released Haig Clubman, pretty much the same whisky, in a less flashy blue bottle, without the Beckham endorsement and charged £25, much closer to its true worth.

An excellent video, not just on Fragrance one, but on market positioning as a whole. Jeremy's whole brand (which includes him) really isn't ready to transition into full-blown niche house. Like FA says, there's nothing wrong with being mid-market. Whenever a department store creates an awesome scent at a low price point, the fragheads still rave about it, and the casual wearers help boost the sales. The price and "cache" doesn't affect the praise if the scent works. But it doesn't work as easily going the other way.
It's been years since I stepped out of the fragrance "game" (TBH, synths are much more fun and worse on the bank balance), but FA's videos are consistently interesting to watch.

I don't have anything against Daniel (Jeremy) personally because i don't know him and i wouldn't wish him any bad fortune but either he believes his own hype, which means he may not be playing with a full deck or he knows his fans are stupid and will shell out a relative fortune for strong mall fragrances. Whilst not at all siding or agreeing with the hefty $400 price tag for a newborn brand that Fragrance One is, I do want to ask if material costs of manufacturing/producing stuff the only thing that goes into setting a retail price point. $400 sure is outrageous but, where do you factor in all the creative efforts that went into producing what you finally see in an Office or Date bottle? Does anyone really think that the money we proudly shell out on Creeds, Kilians, or PDMs is what their actual cost of production is? It’s all about brand projection and what image you create for your brand. Fragrance market is highly competitive as is, it all boils down to how you squeeze yourself into the market and make your ground.

I have a couple Creed and Tom Ford fragrances and also one bottle of office. I like it, it’s clean and fresh, smells like something else but still smells like it’s own thing. He’s taking a brand he started not long ago and competing with established brands, Creed has been in this since the 18th century. You’re correct that they don’t discount and those of us that buy it know they don’t, so when we buy it we know what we’re getting into. Wanted to try office when it first came out, but I held out waiting for one of his sales if I was going to go in blind. It did feel like it cheapened it a bit. Still a solid everyday fragrance, but I understand what you’re saying completely. I think of it like a fragcomm bernie sanders (sorry if you aren't from the US) in a total respectful way, meaning, he is driven by a highly ethical core that will shun mainstream crap if it's really crap in his opinion, and videos like this demonstrate it, even more gutsy considering they have a personal relationship. I really think Jeremy has been reading books from CEOs for too long, talking about self-worth and that you should be proud of your high prices (I've worked for companies with this mindset but they truly were at the pinnacle of the industry) but like George says, that directly contradicts what I and many others see as the goal of the line - the best fragrance for X. I've gotten so many compliments for office and date and they are dumb reaches. But think about the brand Clive Christian - no one in the community talks about them because you take one look at the price and we immediately write them off. I've smelled a few, and they ARE high quality, but not enough to justify 500 dollars for 1 oz.

When Jeremy increased the price of Office One before he made it available, I stopped watching his channel. I considered everything else he has done as an insult to us consumers. You have done an amazing job in pointing out the huge problem with his marketing of his products and their identity. However, I think that the deeper problem here is his ego. He thinks that because he deserves it, that is enough to justify the price.

I bought office and date. I was extremely disappointed in the bottles. For that price I expected classier bottles and packaging.

Wow, I love your honesty, it’s something that you don’t really see in most fragrance reviews.

When Jeremy mentioned he was going to come out with his own fragrance...I was so happy for him, and I trusted his opinion and taste in fragrance and couldn't wait for the release. When I seen the price, I was a bit turned off and disappointed. This alone made me question his judgement. I watched a few reviews to see what others thought of the fragrance. That did help...until Jeremy released a video about how he could have priced it much cheaper...but he chose not to. He purposely priced it out of most of his UA-cam viewers price range. That was a hard pill to swallow. At that point, I tried to avoid his videos all together. Long story short...I seen an advertisement of BOGO on Office and bought it and am waiting for it to ship. When I ordered that...I seen that he priced 1 candle for $158 USD. That is a F*****g joke. I also checked out the prices on Black Tie. I have decided that this will be my last and only purchase I will ever make from him.

I hope he comes down to earth, because with that kind of review coming from someone that clearly likes him should make him think .

I really enjoyed your stance and completely agree with you. You've hit the nail on the head!
It's absolutely true that prestigious brands do not throw discounts and bogos around...I've never seen Chanel go on sale; it isn't even part of the 15% off sale that lux departments stores sometimes run.
    The clash is real.

Straight away for me the problem was the price strategy. It didn’t match his consumer base nor does it have the heritage or credentials. He would have been a fragrance hero if he charged designer prices
