The most held theory is that in February the 35th anniversary of Legend of Zelda will happen, and they may do something similar so they dont want the Mario thing to overshadow it.

March 31 is the end of Nintendo's fiscal year and therefore the end of the anniversary year

Hmm my feeling is that it might be related to zelda since it came out on Februari 21, 1986. Meaning they might do 35 anniversary direct of that.
