TRIP REPORT | First Time on Lufthansa A340 | Frankfurt to Los Angeles | Lufthansa Airbus A340-300

- Lufthansa Trip Report flying from Frankfurt to Los Angeles onboard one of the last Lufthansa A340-300, on a beautiful day, particularly in the US.
We took off from Frankfurt towards the east and quickly made a 90° turn to the north to start our route to Los Angeles. We crossed all Germany towards the north and entered the Northern Sea, leaving Denmark on our right.
For the next 4 hours, we just saw the ocean: water and clouds everywhere. Until eventually reaching Greenland, after flying to the north of Iceland. From Greenland, we flew towards Canada across the Baffin Bay. We crossed all Canada flying towards Montana, in the US. We flew towards the Yellowstone Park and then towards Salt Lake City. After leaving Las Vegas on our right we made a right turn towards Los Angeles, where we landed on time, after a beautiful approach over the city.
About the onboard service, I must say that Lufthansa is slowly improving the service. The salad on the main service is not lettuce with lettuce anymore, but a proper salad; and the cake is something more elaborated. The bread is still cold as ice, but the warm meal seems to have a little more work on it. I decided to take the Chicken BBQ option. It was generally good, but I still think the amount is not enough for an almost 12-hour flight.
5 hours after the crew offered 15 grams of crackers. The most ridiculous snack I've seen on a long flight like this one.
1 hour before the arrival, the second meal was served. Well, if that can be called a meal... It was a cheese and vegetables sandwich together with a yogurt. Call me crazy, but I think the service offered on these 12h flights was tiny.

Magnificent aircraft and such a shame so many airlines were so quick to ditch them during covid yet could use them now.
Yeah... but they are pretty bad in terms of fuel efficiency. Lufthansa still uses them because they don't have other options. Also, they own the planes... so they don't need to pay any leasing fees.
Especially the 340-600 just a stunning aircraft inside and out.
Hopefully a few more years left with Lufthansa.
"Quick to ditch them"? These aircraft cost huge amounts for airlines to buy or to lend lease , and their running and maintenance costs per day are huge.
If a worldwide unforeseen event (such as Corona virus) suddenly leaves some planes flying or on the ground EMPTY indefinitely, then the airline is suddenly BLEEDING MONEY on each airplane per day..
The way to save the airline is to "quickly ditch them", to stop this bleeding of the airline's overall budget.
U are right my friend. if you prefer being shoe-horned into a 787/777/a350 with narrow 30" pitch please let me know :) When airlines crow about technological marvels they are not talking about your puny bread roll of a seat in the back.
As I know the 787 will replace the A340-300@@OnBoardHD

@@OnBoardHDyeah, I had a 340-600 on my way to JFK in June, and it definitely feels less under-powered during take off like the 340-300. I remember the first time I flew on the 340-300 many years back, I grew really concerned because I seriously thought there is something wrong as it didn’t seem to gain altitude in the beginning (up until this point I was used to 747-400 only on long haul)
Lol the A340 sucks though. It’s not efficient and it’s uncomfortable.
@@danielduhon5547 you are kind of correct considering the fact that it is inefficient, but for comfort, that is totally subjective.
@@Titan-wz5rx I’m sure there is an airline somewhere that has more comfortable seating, but Lufthansa specifically was bad.

Glad to be a member and thanks for the welcome! We flew from Frankfurt to Miami two weeks ago on the 747 and loved it. I admit we were in Business Class as it was very much a one off treat. You and I are the same, I stare out the window the entire time except over the sea, part of the joy of flying! Look forward to the next journey you take!

Yeah, I can imagine that must be much more comfortable... I finally got to the enough ammount of miles to be able to get a very good fare for a business long-haul, I will definitely take if on the Boeing 747. I will announce it very soon, but it will be on one of the longest routes of the B747-8i.
Next Saturday we'll fly from the Caribbean, travelling for the first time with Air Caraibes (A350-900).

Lufthansa hs been my favorite airline for several decades. I travel to and from Europe several times a year from Boston and the A340 is one of my favorite aircraft.

Lufthansa A340s have a special place in my heart. Back in 2014, itt was the first time flying ever, and it's such remarcable experience. I remember that by that time Lufthansa would gave hot towels before lunch/dinner in Economy Class. Can you immagine that? Nowadays they barely give you food, as we can see in the video. Anyways, I hope this plane can still work for a long time, bringing joy to the aviation enthusiasts

Hi Onboard! I've been watching your videos since 2017 and it's amazing to see how much you've improved, both in terms of video quality and airline variety/routes.
My favorite part of your channel is probably the fact that you always show the views out the window. Speaking of which, this looked like a very scenic flight! The views reminded me of your Norse 787 video, which makes sense given that both were flights between Northern Europe and LAX.
As for the A340, I'd love to fly on one. Actually, I'd love to fly on any quadjet haha.

Yeah, the route was quite similar... but the whole point of this video was to fly on the LH A340-300 before they retire them.
Now the priority is to fly o the A340-600 and A380. Really looking forward to it. Not for the service onboard, but for the planes :)

Such a quiet cabin!
For being a 4 engines plane it's quite quiet yep
The use of "outdated" split-flap departure board in the main concourse of Terminal 1 is very much intentional and has been the iconic hallmark of the Frankfurt airport. People love watching the flaps flipping down row by row and hearing the soothing, mesmerising sound they make while the information is updated.
I'm saying that the land-side looks very nice. The airside (after security control) is compeltely outdated without any purpose, just save money...
@@OnBoardHD You are mistaken: it was not to save money. You need to learn the first forty years history of the Terminal 1 to understand why the renovations were necessary. The extensive renovation in the airside was due to a several factors: rebuilding the entire corridors to install the second screening room for the US-bound flights after 9/11 and separate passport control for the Schengen and non-Schengen flights from 1992 on; removing the secured enclaves and small handbag x-ray machines from the waiting area at the gates (they were necessary in the 1970s due to the bouts of political terrorist attacks in Germany); replacing the rubber flooring tiles with smoother marble tiles (the rubber tiles had the raised dots that made pushing trolleys, prams, wheelchairs, and like strenuous); adding the underground tunnels as to connect and so forth. I know because I have used FRA many times for the US-bound and intra-European flights since 1973 and had seen so many changes over the years.
We used to fly A340 back and forth to Sydney Australia via Honolulu to Vancouver in the early 00's. They just have a feeling in the sky that put a smile on my face. It was also nice because seat pitch in economy was still 34" :) Nice video report and happy travels to you!

It was very nice to watch as always! I also dreamed to fly on A343 as it still exist nowadays;) BTW yes the service is downgraded sadly:( In July I've flown with LOT from Warsaw to LAX in eco, and first meal was more developed and during the second service there was a second hot meal again so the sandwich in LH is really surprising;) Cheers!

LOT still offers 2 hot meals? I will consider them for future flights in that case. The thing is that they oeprate the Boeing 787... which I always try to avoid because of the crews always blocking the windows in the dimm position... Did they dimm the windows remotely and block them on your flight?

@@Schrottkralle Airplane food is almost always unhealthy so what’s your point? Having only one meal and a snack before landing on a 12 hour flight can be just as unhealthy as two hot meals and a snack. Whether or not it’s healthy isn’t even a problem, it’s not like I’m consistently eating those unhealthy meals. Also, the desired meals during the day are breakfast, lunch, and dinner (essentially a meal every 5-6 hours), so either way, it’s not that healthy to starve either.
Nice trip report. The views of Greenland and Yellowstone are as always extremely good. I love all your flights. But would it be possible to fly also one time from Munich (MUC)? This is the most popular airport in Germany.

You're the best at what you do on UA-cam, you produce top content week after week and the information with regards to each aircraft showing destination/distance is superb and I can't imagine the work that goes into it. I also love the fact you record the announcements by the flight deck, cabin crew and the safety brief because it's such a big part of the journey. You manage to be informative without being over the top and you make the viewer feel like they go on a journey every Saturday morning. Dear traveler, beautiful camera/a real eye for the right perspective, duration etc. No talking - even better. Free Spanish class reading parallel. It doesn't get better. And now the negatives:
The same flight on Iberia. How would you have felt differently? LH offers you something that is priceless to global travelers = 100% confidence in equipment status and pilot training.
And let's stop complaining about eco flood. Remember the last boutique sandwich kiosk before boarding. There is no limitation on whatever food you bring on board to make it better than business in your eco seat.
I mean I don't complain to my mom when the fridge is empty pretending I was starving. Keep up the good work :-)

Mi primer vuelo fue en un A340-300 de AirFrance de CCS-CDG. Asi que le tengo un cariño especial a este modelo de avión, lastima que varias aerolineas lo han retirado de la flota. Espero tener el chance de volver a volar en ellos.

The A340 is possibly the only Airbus I actually like! I got into aviation as a youngster in the late 1990s, and there was so much variety back then! Since then, (just like we see happening with cars) newer models are trending towards all looking the same-- unspecialized. Man, I miss sitting by an airport and constantly seeing DC-9s, 727s, DC-10s, L1011s, older-model 737s, 757s, 747s, etc.... all filling unique niches. Now it's just an endless parade of A320s and zombie 737s that are so far removed from the original design that they couldn't even glide without a bunch of computer band-aids. Soon enough, we won't ever see anything but generic twin-jets. I miss the tri-jets so much... my first flight ever was on a Northwest DC-10. Just a few MD-11 freighters left flying now. So sad that the 747s and A340s are fading away too... Oh well-- I'm ranting now, haha. Aviation is still fascinating no matter what, I'm just nostalgic for the much wider variety of design concepts 20+ years ago, and all the analog engineering. Gotta keep moving forward...

Very nice video! We flew the Lufthansa A 340 in September MUC to LAX. It was the first time flying the A340 and I must say it was a very positive experience. I prefer this 2-4-2 configuration instead of the 3-3-3 config in the A350. For how long time do you think Lufthansa will continue to fly with the A340? If I have understood correctly, the fuel consumption is not so good compared to newer aircrafts.
I also prefer the 2-4-2 than the 3-3-3, but those seated in the middle seats on the A340 probably wouldn't say the same heheh
They are going to fly the A340 until there are enough 787 and 777. I think Lufthansa will fly the A340 probably 3-5 more years. The A340-600 a bit longer because of the First Class and they need First Class airplanes in Munich.

Yellowstone National Park is actually the oldest National park, globally. I used to go through the YNP annually cause my family went to the Grand Teton National Park.

I’m still impressed that Lufthansa is even operating the a340 in an era dominated by stupendously high fuel prices. It has almost the same capacity as an a330-300 just greater range and the -300 model is called the hair dryer for a reason because of how absolutely underpowered its engines are, which is why it needed four of them in the first place because they were built to originally power the a320 family.
They are using the A340-300, A340-600 and the 747-400 because the 777 and 787 are delayed and these are the only airplanes for long haul they have. Another reason is that they have first class. The original plan was that these airplanes going to be retired after the Covid but due the reason I've already said they are using these older planes.

Pues la verdad es que intento evitar todos los Boeing 787 a toda costa. Independientemente de la aerolínea. Las tripulaciones tienden a bloquear las ventanillas en mínima claridad poco después de despegar, algo con lo que no estoy de acuerdo ni acepto después de haber pagado por asiento de ventanilla.
Lufthansa catering really went from bad to ok. Crazy to think they were world class a decade ago.

You have high expectations about the food. The snack is looking fine to me. Don’t expect a full lunch meal instead of a snack especially after having two full lunches. I am always amazed by the quantity of food you can est

The fact is that 1 warm meal is not enough ona 11h+ flight (I had 2 because I polite asked if they had any remaining once the service was finished). Then a 15g crackers in 9h is amazing. To put the cherry on the top, 1 sandwich. If you think this is a good service for this lenght, congrats. Enjoy it.
@@OnBoardHD I don’t know many airlines that serve two full hot meals on a flight to L.A if we don’t consider a hot sandwich being a hot meal. The food I had in may with United was way worse that this LH catering

Hace como dos semanas, en el vídeo del 777 de Etihad te pregunté respecto a cual era el mejor sitio de ventana en los 737 8-200 de Ryanair.
Te agradezco la respuesta que me diste (miré el vídeo que me aconsejaste), pero me servirá para otra ocasión.
Porque para el domingo 17 (decir que miré previamente en Ryanair desde Colonia, por eso sabía que era un 737 8-200) salió un mejor precio con Condor a Alicante, volando desde Düsseldorf en un Airbus A320 operado por Heston Airlines (especificado en la web de Condor).
Por lo menos, es una buena oportunidad de probar otra aerolínea, que dicho sea de paso, estaba deseando incarle el diente.
