weirs guitar on jack straw is excellant...... and it is easily heard in the mix....i see jerry gettin into bobs groove at the end of his solo....good stuff :)
My first show. Totally blew me away and changed the course of my life. I didn't know all the songs at the time, and just remembered that two songs had "Rider" in them, and there was this ridiculous jam toward the end of the first set that was unlike anything I had heard before (LL>Supplication). Before this, I had heard tapes in the dorms at my high school and college, but didn't get it. Seeing them play live changed everything. After this, I couldn't and still can't get enough of this music and the amazing musicians who play it. Thank you to all of them and to voodoonola and the other ones who brought this video to life.
We drove all night from Lake Placid. Very little sleep, we snuck inside Cumberland County Civic Center and watched the crew set up. That tour was the best of my life. I saw every show.
Holy shit....that jam in Jack Straw, and then the jam into Supplication.....Bobby and Phil jamming 4 feet from one another, Jerry coming out of his chin to chest trance, stepping out of his "box" to face the band, looking at them all, egging them on, "little more boys...little more..." Hot damn that's some good stuff right there.
😃 thank you! I was tripping that day with Lisa Hamilton riding around Portland on a V-65 Magna waving at Dead Heads when it started snowing 😁I had just found an old photo from that day then found this 🤗
fuck em....its a complete waste of time to criticize the guy that was the lightning rod for the greatest band there ever was..even when he was off, he was better than just about everyone. And it wasn't just about Talent. It was about heart and soul. He let us in every night, he tried like hell, and he was loyal to all of us, giving us everything he had until he could give no more.
A general admission show packed to the roof ! It was really crowded on the floor but the party was on! That LL/Sup shows what Garcia was about and the orchestration of the band backing him. Killer moment to catch on video - a treasure. Thanks for sharing it!
Yeah, this really caught the Dead at their live best. You could tell everyone was playin their asses off. They never get tired, especially Garcia, incredible.
Every time I see Supplication in a set list, all I can think of is Suppliglurp. The first tape collector I ever met had that as a listing on one of his tapes. When I was a fledgling head, I was like, "what is this song here."
... and the music spoke for itself. Having said that, we ALL have our periods of "down". But, in the end, Jerry brought infinitely more light than darkness.
This is when I first really started loving the grateful Dead. I saw them for the first time in Detroit at pine knob in 1984. Then I saw them one other time with Jerry in Albany New York on March 26th 1990. I scalped a ticket and got a fifth row center. It was the most amazing concert I've ever been to. They were so good!
Remember how big a video camera was in the early 80's? I give huge credit and thanks to the individual who managed to sneak the monster in and shoulder it for the show. No small feat. Hot set here. Thanks V. This show was obviously a barn burner.
Wow the Jack Straw rocks. I was on the entire Fall 83 Tour, (Richmond thru Syracuse) and Portland was not even in the top half of the best 11 shows of that run. I know we were getting road weary and it was a long night after the amazing Lake Acid show, so at the time we were not impressed, but this Jack Straw shows that we, I were just spoiled by the many great shows of the Fall 83 tour. Thanks for posting. Hopefully the 2nd set surfaces.
There is always a memory when you re-visit a show. I think that was the show where Parker stripped down naked and walked into the crowd. Last we saw of Parker was when he was being carted off by the popo. Oh well... the show must go on! and we watched and enjoyed it!!
I agree with you. Even Steve parish said that jerry got something *back* after the coma. from 87- 90 he was on fire. 91-93 he had some shows that were on fire too.
im both grateful for this footage and annoyed. you see this is one of my favorite versions of althea and the fact that dude zooms all the way out during one of his most firey solos just kills me.
@mijknahs You make a great point. No one talks about the coma and how it affected Jerry's playing. Listen to the stuff he plays on the JGB Rosemont show from 1983. During "Harder they Come" he just peals chorus after chorus of ridiculously incredible solos. He had a touch that really was reaching fruition and then it took quite a few steps back. The playing was so unpredictable, yet just right. My jaw still drops listening to his playing then.
agree his playing at this point was dynamic that was lost from the coma. he still improved his muscial knowledge but his fingers couldnt do everything he wanted them to. .
@mijknahs Yeah - Roseland!!! I wasn't there, but wow! I'm no Dead expert, but Garcia was on! At his best he was so damn articulate, great tone/sound; he toyed with the tempos, had an amazing vibrato and didn't just put one note in the pocket, he put them all there while setting up more pockets! Sorry folks, but Charlie Parker played some of the best solos known to man while he was pretty damn out of it. Garcia may have been a mess, but he was playing guitar for the ages.
@@josephm.noviello1996 yea his addictions temporarily helped his laying but in the end it all comes crashing down. i dont blame him he was under constant pressure to tour.
Me too. Went to my first two shows in oct 84 in Augusta then Portland in February or March can't remember except it was snowing. Glad i got to attend at least 4 shows.
Remember hearing a cassette with might as well and thought who was credited with writing this one. Sounds like a bob tune but jerry sings it. Never knew the real answer
@LoloYodel Jerry also didn't rip in '89 like he did in '82-'83. Even if his stage presence was affected , I don't think his hands were affected. Some of the most smokin Supplications are in '82. Just spot on inspired. Things just got more tame after the Coma in general I thought.
Not saying better, or more energy, but for 80's Supplication and if on video this and...End Set 1:...(Bird Song->El Paso->) Lazy Lightning->Supplication->Might As Well. (8/6/1982)->ua-cam.com/video/GCz1vvMNFCY/v-deo.html
...and this, End Set 1:...Supplication Jam->Might As Well. Set 2: Revolution->Hell in a Bucket->Touch of Grey->Estimated Prophet->Eyes of the World->Drums...(4/8/1985)->ua-cam.com/video/WfOGk1PtfG4/v-deo.htmlm45s

Yummy. That Althea super. If you only had 2 minutes to turn space aliens into the dead Might As Well start about 57 minutes in. That lazy supp jam is always good. Rea reason it under lock and key now.
Most likely it was filmed with a Beta-Cam (as in Betamax) which was nearly impossible to stabilize without being mounted. Tough to zoom with clarity without bright light, too.
was this the show i recall folks swinging in on the 2nd floor on a window, the police saying blankly "stop you'll fall you''ll hurt yourself" (was their job), and an entrance to the side that you could put your hand under a blacklight and if you got a puddle from the clown you were in ? :)
I didn't care for the late 80s shows much at all. Big venues. Too many Dylan covers and I wasn't a big fan of a lot of the newer Dead material. Jerry's playing IMHO wasn't as good as it was in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Yes, Jerry was generally more coherent, but he wasn't exactly sober in the late 1960s and early 1970s and no one complains about that era!
I was at that show. Brings back memories.
weirs guitar on jack straw is excellant...... and it is easily heard in the mix....i see jerry gettin into bobs groove at the end of his solo....good stuff :)

Nothing like yer first show- mine was on Chuck Berry's birthday in 79. I can totally relate -from your fingertips to God's eyes . Peace.
That about sums up the “first show” experience!
We drove all night from Lake Placid. Very little sleep, we snuck inside Cumberland County Civic Center and watched the crew set up. That tour was the best of my life. I saw every show.

Nothing better than when Jerry wakes up in these 83-84 shows!
Yes, it's the magic of 82-84, Love it!!! Jerry was imo playing beautifully in fall 83' and you describe it perfectly.
Andrew, Fireonshakedown and eric- you guys got it exactly right!
September/October 83, the boys were on fire! Some of slinkiest, funkiest Dead music ever laid down.
😃 thank you! I was tripping that day with Lisa Hamilton riding around Portland on a V-65 Magna waving at Dead Heads when it started snowing 😁I had just found an old photo from that day then found this 🤗
What a great time we had on this tour good acid good friends good times
Totally! I can't believe some people avoid the early 80's because they think Jerry is messed up. He may have had issues but his playing was going off!
Spot On, My favorite era for the 80s!! Garcia was Killing it in 1983, Period.

Yeah. He was at his guitar pickin best in the 80's.
This is why I love 83-84! Garcia/Phil/Weir all rocking like crazy. Better then 89 or 90' even as good as those years were as well.
I was there in a young man's body
I was there backstage !
Just found this. Unreal, miss them daze as a kid going to the shows. Big Steve hanging behind the amps watching Jer’

Gift from Heaven. Thank You.
The boys truly loved Maine. Lewiston , Augusta , Portland , Oxford Plains - there all on the same street
So did the boys from Albert ct. .
The boys always brought their A game to that little hockey barn. That's where I got on the bus in 1986.
Nice leg work during the Jack Straw jam. :-)
what a great moment between Bob and Jerry coming out of that Jack Straw jam. Thanks for posting this.
Bob broke this guitar out in Richmond on the 8th
Jer's awake he was just comfortable with us
Great show, great tour, great year. Thanks' Boys.
+Hunter J Nice looking shep!

To think they played Lake Acid the night before!? Wow! Garcia was so on FIRE this Fall tour!!
two back to back shows different cities this tour my first trip to maine
But gdamn that jam in Lazy/Supplication......! Raining fire from the heavens! Miss this band, those days.
was here i think you can hear me yelling during jackstraw. my what a amazing weekend it was emblazoned in my mind for ever still chills when i listen
So much acid at these shows in the 80's, even the camera is experiencing trailers!
Super sweet Lazy Lightning Jam!
That Jack Straw goes out to John Perry Barlow, wherever his spirit manifests tonight.....RIP.

So true. Camcorders were huge. That’s why we were caught. Lucky to have anything. Lucky to get out with set one. Story to the rest of this one.

LL>Supplication is one of the best ever! I love it when Jerry walks over to Weir and Phil!!
My first Grateful Dead show.
Does anybody remember the burger stand outside the center, best munchies food ever, lots of love to them

Woah! My first show and I can rewatch / listen to it! THANK YOU more than I can express!
Ooops 2nd show, but still I'm super grateful!
Awesome thanks man!!!!! Jer is guitar god
@flazjsg
I think you mean the Roseland Ballroom shows from 1983. Some of my favorite JGB tapes! 5/31/83 and 6/1/83. Smokin!
If Steve, sweatbelly, Ziemba, sees this, lake acid and Portland road trip was the funnest time I had on the road. Hope you get this message brother
This is when Jerry was transitioning from Uncle Jerry to Papa Bear.
im both grateful for this footage and annoyed. you see this is one of my favorite versions of althea and the fact that dude zooms all the way out during one of his most firey solos just kills me.
I went to this show and still have the ticket stub.
Great show, I was there. Of course they shit on our heads with Might as Well hahaha!
Would you have preferred Don't Cheese or Day Job

You can make that generalization at your peril. For example some of the mid-90s Terrapins had soloing unlike any other era. Epic.

This is a jammin version of Jack Straw!!
I once was at a music swap event and This set is the only set from this source. Rumor has it during set break they were caught with VHS Rec.

Whammy Bar Bobby!!! He’s awfully fond of it, at least for the jack straw and tleo Jerry seems to have fun with it

damn, but that be some outrageous shit.
lastly, thanks to Thalin for that video stabilisation cause before it was tortuous.
Has the second set for this show ever popped up? Do we know if it was even taped? This was the first full-tour I ever did. Loved this night!
