Brilliant strat, force your opponent to crash to desktop. Bank on your computer being better than theirs so you can hold out longer! Is this a pay to win strat?
GrÃma: Even if it is breached, it would take a number beyond reckoning, thousands, to storm the keep.
Saruman: Tens of thousands.
GrÃma: But my lord, there is no such force!
41:47 "The armies March!!! TO WAAAAAR!!!!" - Winter
WINTER, thank you a lot of making vids of this game! I've been playing SC2 for years and i started BAR the past week and its such a good game. Can't believe I'd never heard of it before... keep up the vids. Hopefully this game gets an even bigger player base than it already has. Thank you again, enjoy the gaming!
excited to see more BAR!
I really like the BAR content. SC2 is also nice. Thanks for having fun and sharing it with us.
11:12: This dude been shelling Winter's units because he's still targeting the enemy Arty that went down almost a minute ago ;p
28:15: That poor Titan, rendered completely impotent!
I love the cinematic shots at the end
Loving these games!
Commentary is so entertaining. I love Winter and I love Beyond All Reason.
Yellow halfway through the match "we are legion, we are endless"
Technology is good, but infantry wins wars.
technology is good but 5 fps isnt.
Tell that to the Japanese in 1945.
It's actually just poor game design. The BAR spreadsheet winter linked frequently clearly shows grunts pawns ticks being extremely cost effective in all metrics even without taking into account flanking bonus.
@@rhmdrhmd-i5i Perhaps, although Razorbacks and similar units should prove to be natural counteres to them.
bringing ww1 tactics into a futuristic setting, results may surprise you
Loving these videos! Really nice unit control with the fiends and sheldons
oh i was in this, and that grunt horde was horrible to deal with lmao
i can imagine how fun it must be to play with 6 fps.... even watching it was painful....
most unique game of BAR i've seen so far. absolutely loved it xD
Awesome scale. Hope frost giant loves this as much as I do.
Be cool if on that map nukes could blow away the ice and turn it into a naval game. Could probably lead to some interesting strategies in the late game like getting a flagship up or something.
On water maps with tide, if you create a big crater with a nuke or a commander explosion near the beach, the tide will eventually fill the crater and create a sort of pond. The terrain physics actually allows for it, it's just that not all maps have that feature.
Terrain deformation is a thing in BAR and depending on water level water will appear in big enough holes.
Thanks for the game
Spring devs 15 years ago: yeah this game totally support 5k units on pentium iv that can barely do 1080p
Spring in 2023: 10 fps with 3k units on a modern computer.
People did 20v20 with pentiums and multi core amds from the 2000s.
The graphics 15 years ago were much much simplier, probably along with physics. Much easier to render something in lower resolution that is just 30-40 verticles compared to nowadays models that you render for much higher resolution, and with all the particles to boot:)
The simulation being done now is far more complex. And framerates back then we're famously low
Overall, the game is definitely better with pathfinding, unit movement and targeting, but it's also true that performance took a major dip. That said, it performs better than FAF, which is good. Also, you would have very bad framerates on those old computers.
I remember by poor laptop fighting for its life when playing modded TA with 3k units against 4 hard AI's who send in a constant never ending stream of thousands of units to die to my defense lines. PC's fared a lot better, but you didn't have more than 30 fps back then.
My laptop was basically a powerpoint presentation and it burned so hot I could run an advanced Geothermal plant on the exhaust fan haha.
wowwww that was absolutely BONKERS i felt like my pc was going to crash just watching the replay lol!
Total annihilation was a good game, but had balance issues. There was a tier 1 unit a couldn't find any defense against. It also lacked the micro aspect of other rts games.
The ability to create new units and release packs from third parties was nice, and the controls were extensive.
In the end, balance is king.
Decades of community development has really streamlined most balance issues. While certain strats or units could be called "overpowered" on certain maps, in a way *everything* is overpowered, but nothing lacks counters. Even the weakest units can be deadly if they are in the right place at the right time. Even the grunt spam in this map could have been pre-empted with properly scouted and prepared bombing runs on econ and production, or tactical commander assassination. When the right side team lost their Air/Tech player, no one really focused on air scouting, bombers, or gunships on that team.
Honestly the biggest "problem" with this game is that it was never professionally optimized from the ground-up to handle this sort of scale. The army of 5000 grunts is an issue because this game is based on an open source engine that is based on a 20 year old framework. Even modern takes on the genre like Supreme Commander focus on eye candy and mechanics and have unit caps, albeit high ones (1000 per player). A true modern re-imagining of TA that neglects the bells-and-whistles of graphics and detail and is optimized from the ground-up to handle huge unit counts and big team battles on gigantic maps would be a sight to behold. A shame it's unlikely to happen
@@TheLingWhisperer nah nuke rush is busted. Actually op, needs some type of nerf, like building a fusion reactor first then you can build the launcher. It’s balanced in Sup Comm FA because you need t3 engi to build it, here you can build it like 10 min into a game lol
@@jamyorday just build anti nuke it’s cheap
@@LitPrincess789 lol yea go and build anti nuke by the 10 min mark in a game like this. If you did it every game you will have lost the front already, because it’s not always someone in back line rushes nuke
@@TheLingWhisperer I know what the original game offered. I bought it when it was released. I played Chisholm trail and zork on the commodore 64. I played kings quest on an IBM pc Jr. I played asteroids, space invaders, and centipede in the arcades.
I watched pinball machines go from mechanical to digital displays.
I played warcraft, wolfenstein 3d, warcraft 2, MUDS, command and conquer, etc.
I had a 6 pc LAN from 87 to 03...
This game is still lacking in micro and has balance issues.
I'm pretty sure t1 factories are at grunt production speed cap way before this many turrets, scary to think he couldve had more factories lol
If i can't win with my force and strategy, i will win by crashing your computer !
I was wondering about this strat.. Well its out there now.. :D
When every one of your teammates goes scout spam and your FPS goes down to 10...
Bar bar bar bar bar bar bar bar
brave infantry has made the ultimate sacrefice
Today I've played similar game session. I probably had 5fps on the peak. And additional, one guy sent 7 nukes, my laptop felt the radiation itself.
Without any jokes, it's really hard to confront a swarm of T1 units. And in some cases there's no idea how to get closer to the enemy base
There are multiple missile wave mechs/tanks that can wipe out entire groups of t1 on their own, every volley. Thor's and the T2 Jaguar tanks are also decent using their chain lightning main canons. A line of those can indefinitely keep back a t1 spam if played right, and then you use longer range or missile sprays to clear the way forward. You'll probably want some stuff to snipe off the stronger units that are mixed in, but... That's the general idea.
@@TheDeathlyG I'll try it tactic, thanks!
@@TheDeathlyG did the other team in this game just utterly fail to produce and use the arty/missile solutions you mention?
@@unclenchasbestos it looked like the topside did at least. From the glimpses of their positions it looked like they were trying to fight the spam with Flamers and static defenses, which don't really hold up to overwhelming spam since they have to enter firing range and take chip damage.
epic.. :"That sounded Important" lol some building blowing up in background lol
Where can I find the song "turningpoint - whatever" 4:20
Does anyone know how Winter has his build options set up on the left side? I struggle with the unsorted default display.
Gotta change it to grid mode!
@@jamyorday Thanks!
Turn your micro-heavy RTS into a simple lane-defense in one easy step!
I made hover first time on this map, then realised it was ice...
No one can understand how much I want to play this game
It hurts to be poor and worse... not having a PC :(
It's like having what you want most in front of you for free and completely yours if you move a little.
but being tied from head to toe and not being able to move sucks :/
I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy
Well at least I get a chance to watch others play :D
Do you have a job? Do you pay rent? Let's talk IRL strategy! You can do it!
@@kgeo2686 I have no clue about their situation, however I do know that rent in some areas, combined with a low paying job, can already be extremely thin ice in terms of money you have left to spend on other things that are (not) important - a sad reality of todays era, still
how do you drag+build mex? if i dont click exactly on top it dosent build it D:
There's an area Mex option, select a builder and look for the area Mex button
I can't get that to work well either. I end up using the area mex button, but that doesn't let me choose pathing.
@@chrisflanagan7564 where? D:
I think it's not bound with default keybinds but if you select a constructor unit you should see an option at the bottom of the screen titled "Area mex" click that, then click and drag anywhere on the map to expand a radius
Control Z (with grid at least)
i was here to learn early to mid game transitioning, ending up learning something more interesting...
Im fairly new at this game, but want to try multiplayer! is there any noob friendly servers or are the community pretty chill? I just dont want to join peoples games and absolutely troll them into a loss :P
People themselves host the servers and setup the rules. Given that majority of players are average/casual, there's always more "noob servers" than "pro servers". However, it is advised to at least have some experience with fighting BARbarian AI and knowing the basic starting builds and essentials to play multiplayer, since it takes only one player that doesn't know what he's doing for the frontline to fall apart. As long as you actually participate, everyone is pretty chill.
there's nothing wrong with being new at the game, just be aware of the basic building stuff and try to help your team, I recommend holding the line as a good place to start, feel free to ask and ping for support
Due to a recent influx of players there are always many noob lobbies running. Most people are chill, all we ask is that you play some Barbarian AI or the scenarios to get to know some basics before joining in the multiplayers.
thankyou everyone for the awesome replies! really appreciate it and ill see you on the frontlines perhaps!
i would love to see the building only challenge again, but you pushing forward with towers :) :)
What's your PC config?
Hey, when you've got two different unit types, and you tell your units to spread out along a line like that, do all the different unit types get evenly spread out, or will I risk having unit types clump up?
Distribution will be more or less random, so it will depend on the proportion of units. There seem not to be a system of distribution one way or the other. Usually you'd want to have different unit types either upfront or behind anyway. You can use auto-group system to always have different unit types all under specific group number, and you also can use Alt+Move order for units to assume phalanx formation, and/or Ctrl+Move/Ctrl+Fight orders to move units in a current formation.
press f2 to find flat ground to place damn thing
I'm scared to play online, I just play against barbarian AIs....
Have a go, there are many newbie friendly lobbies running. Of course there will always be someone complaining about something but pay them no attention. But do try to listen to criticism if given in a constructive way.
When I watch this game on my cellphone I cant see the units
Lets go winter
MORE BAR MORE BAR MORE BAR!!!
Why didnt they just spam razorbacks in response?
nice!
Love the BAR videos! Question, why do you not macro up your income more? It seems like you play a really clean early game, but after like 7 minutes your energy investments start to fall behind other players. Is this an intentional part of your strat, or something you're working on?
Sometimes it's hard to concentrate on everything. Moreover, metal spent on energy that is not needed is less metal for units in the ground which might be needed at that time to win. Obviously energy production and as a result metal can snowball if you really invest into it, but sometimes being too greedy when the enemy is sending units can have bad results. BAR is quite easy to learn but hard to master.
@@jgillservices I get that, but it becomes clear by mid game that he has fallen behind the curve of the even other front liners. He plays ultra passive against opponents who are investing in poor defenses. Even just a couple of missile bots to harass the light laser turrets early on would be huge.
I'm not saying it's an easy game by any means, but watching some of the long time players is an easy way to find gaps in your own play. I'm not saying I'm better than Winter, it's just something I've noticed in his play vs other streams I watch.
i WILL be on the frontline, and i WILL complain, lol
Seems like most games boil down to who can hold the front line and hoping the backline can eco better than the other team. At some point everyone just becomes a spectator of the eco players which is kinda anticlimactic.
You an use the ` key instead of q to draw,
Your videos are great but they're too long to show friends to get them interested. This game needs a good 10-15 minute trailer and gameplay demo.
Cortex is definitely op on multiple levels lol
no.
If nothing else, tick spam at least gear checks your opponent. If they can't play the game, you can't lose
Weaponized lag
Epic spam 🙂
so the ultimate strategy in BAR endgame is to kill the FPS so everyone wants to stop playing.... great.
God i wasnt even playing and i wanted to stop watching.....
Yes, and the devs say it's viable that the best PC wins is a strategy.
