Confirm as a constant traveler)) I went to Japan for the first time on student conference in 2013 and our group Japanese students showed us that’s it normal to go and get stuff from supermarket and eat in the park (it’s a bit hard to find em tho) so I do it every trip and only splurge in Disney Resort, USJ and most dinners)
4 years ago I went to Tokyo and did this very thing. I was amazed to see ready to eat meals in groceries selling for 50% the following day. The quality was equal to a mid-range Japanese restaurant in Manila. Thank goodness the AirBnB I lived in was 5 mins away from the grocery.
I live in a neighborhood where there are 3 supermarkets around. There are a lot of convenience stores too. But I never go to convenience store except for getting a cup of coffee.
Viewer engagement :) Just discovered your channel and it's a gem! I'm Japanese and I like how your videos don't play up Japan to be this super exotic place, but you also don't treat it as less-than. Your videos are so chill.
idk about that. I'd rather know who is around me so I can hold them accountable if need be. If your choices are Random strangers around you or the person who runs the place, id rather has the person who runs the place.
This has been very insightful. I plan on going to Tokyo this fall and basically the money for the trip is the plane ticket. By watching these vids, I've learned that capsules, 7-11's, other convenient stores, and taking advantage of the deals on food, you can get by very cheap in Tokyo. I just plan on walking about the city and seeing it's culture and the people. And I've also heard on a video that you can rent a bike for $2 a day and save your legs and ride about the city.
There is a total breakfast culture here with good deals on western-style breakfast, you just need to be able to identify a local coffee shop. They are all over the place.
Yes! For someone who claims to have lived in Japan for 5 years, she obviously doesn't know very much about Japan or its food culture. Traditional Japanese breakfasts can be found in any number of restaurants. If you're looking for a western-style breakfast, there are bakeries, cafes, and coffee shops all over Tokyo and other major cities. She needs to get out more.
Another great hack is that I want to share with everyone, especially if you need a lot of carbs is to Google 'Yayoiken' within Google Maps, and you will find that this particular restaurant has 19, yes, nineteen branches in Tokyo alone (They have branches all across Japan!). The amazing thing about this restaurant is that if you're REALLY on a budget, you can go between 5 am and 11 am (most branches are open 24 hours, if not till really late) and order a 'Natto Breakfast' for 390 yen. What you'll get is a portion of natto (fermented soybeans... it tastes better than it sounds), some seaweed, miso soup, a raw egg, a piece of tofu and here's where the best deal is: You can refill your bowl of rice, and eat as much rice as you like till... kingdom come. There's also complementary pickles on the table that goes well with the rice. If you're REALLY not into natto... then go for the next cheapest set, which is the fried egg set at 470 yen. I have survived for months in Tokyo on a 1000 yen a day budget with this hack. If you time it well, and get the cheapest set just right at 10:45 am or something, with enough rice (the rice is REALLY delicious) and pickles, it should last you the entire day. Intermittent fasting is great for you! You don't have to eat ALL the time! Here is the menu. www.yayoiken.com/en_files/regular_menu_pdf/31_2019.10Regular_EN.pdf?id=1481
Viewer Engagement! When my husband, toddler and I were in Japan we really craved western breakfast. We found business areas had a salaryman breakfast setto, which included buttered toast, a boiled egg, salad, and orange juice or coffee. When we stayed at a Ryokan, we had a traditional Japanese breakfast. I'm glad I had the experience, but since my stomach isn't used to fish that early in the morning, I preferred the salaryman breakfast.
viewer engagement :) Not for everybody but bringing a self standing tent and sleeping in parcs, green spaces, or, my personal favorit, playgrounds, is totally doable. Just make sure you wake up early in the morning.
I've have stayed at the Hotel MyStays in Kameido a number of times, its only a short 5min walk south of Kameido Station. Its cheap but you have to do your own room service which is no problem for me. When the wisteria is in flower at Kameido Tenjin Shrine it looks magic. Never had any issues walking around Kameido at night, always felt safe. Cheers.
I recall a passage from Ann Rice's *_Interview with the Vampire_* when a group of vampire ripped off a pale young woman's clothing: _"...they laid exposed her pale breast and pink nipple."_ It would explain why she's living in a coffin.
i’ve went to japan twice it was amazing i love watching your videos and reliving the experience i wanna go back so much and live there someday tip, idk i think it’s better to get a hotel a little out of the city and take the metro in which is what we did and the pass-mo pass pays off because u will always use it in japan
Viewer engagement! ;D When my husband and I went to japan I had a list of places I wanted to go and we did a TON of walking. It was either take the train and it would take 20 minutes or walk 20 minutes, so we walked. It was great!
I'm a photographer who has never travelled anywhere, and Japan is the place I've always wanted to go. I came upon your channel by accident, and it's not only excellent, it has the information I've been looking for! PS. Viewer Engagement!
I found there is some western style breakfast places you just need to look for them, sometimes really hard lol... if you are in Osaka I recommend West Wood Bakers. One thing as well these places sometimes don't open till 10 or 11 am which is kind of weird for breakfast places but sometimes you gotta take what you can get.
For around $20 a night you can snag a bed at Sakura Hostel Asakusa, which is *amazing*. Clean, friendly, and a great location about 2 blocks away from Sensoji and right behind Japan's oldest amusement park.
in end of february 2019 my son and I stayed one night in this capsule hotel (around 08:32 in the video) and is was absolutely an instagram theatre but horrible in real. It is looking soooo fancy but is a mess if you really want to sleep there. there is no sound barrier at all - all people in the room hear you and you them - the quietest noise from far away across the room is loud. The qualty of the "beds" or "futons" is so low they could leave away these and one would better sleep on blank thin wooden board. It is warm inside - no ventilator or air conditioning but ok I had a capsule in the middle row but the built in lamp doesnt helped here because also this thing creates more heat than light... And I already know a lot of capsule hotels; creapy old ones, cheap ones and comfort ones. None of these were that loud and that bad quality of bed. Never, never, ever again this one. Never! I didnt saw it as we enterd the reception first but a bad sign was that there is a bowl full of ear plugs... Hmm, guess why... But the staff was very nice - I got most of the money back and there was no discussion needed. Seems that they were experienced.
Many internet shops have cheap accommodation with everything you need,Lawson 100 yen shop for cheap food and after 5pm packaged food is reduced,so you can do Japan cheaply without affecting your safety or stomach
viewer engagement! Edit: FWIW, the Aichi prefecture has the モーニング, available virtually everywhere open in the morning, where you get a drink (coffee/tea), toasted bread and a salad or an egg, or both, for a really cheap price tag (essentially, the price of the drink).
Viewer engagement. Of course I read all your screen text. There’s great stuff there. This was a fun and quirky video, “how to get by in Tokyo if you really have to, but seriously don’t do this.” The library capsule hotel was interesting. This has been a welcome escape from the absurd reality that’s America right now.
I love the way you edit and structure your videos! Its, simple, straight to the point and subtly witty, and definitely way better than the youtuber spiel. also, Viewer Engagement is a thing. hehe.
I absolutely can not skip breakfast. The first thing I feel when I wake up is an intense pain with my stomach saying FEED ME BEFORE I DIE!!!! So skipping breakfast is not an option. - This is probably due to the fact that I have been brought up this way, so my body is trained for it.
I used to feel exactly the same way when I first started but I was surprised to discover it only took me about a week to adjust. The body is weird and interesting...
Viewer engagement. :) This is awesome! Really informative! I tend to be a bit of a snob when I go to Japan (so shared spaces are never even considered) but the capsule style hotels are a great compromise.
Yeah honestly I’m not a huge fan of hostels and dormitory style places, simply because I carry a lot of expensive items when I travel but capsule hotels are always so clean and safe, I really enjoy it!

The markdowns at the grocery stores as evening arrives are nice. 8K yen is plenty to budget for each day and yes, you will have a lot of fun. If you are a stinky dude you can pay less due to fewer safety concerns. 😅
I too went back a paused to read the breakfast disclaimer. Oh but I can’t live without breakfast, could live without Japanese coffee though *another Australian coffee snob maybe*
I think this is a stupid question but I hope you get to read and answer it. Is buying canned coffee from the grocery cheaper than buying it from the vending machine? If it is cheaper to buy it from the grocery, how big is the price difference. Thank you.
viewer engagement! it's a shame I didn't know about the grocery stores when I was there. I think I wasn't particularly looking for them but I can't remember seeing any. I did almost every breakfast on kombini food so having the extra variety would've helped :( that inarizushi looked good!
Not very convenient lol. Prepare to hold onto that trash until you’re back home (in your own country). Nah but seriously, there aren’t many trash bins around so convenient stores are your best bet

Love the food tips the supermarket or grocery the best for on the go prepared food. Do they call it the capsule hotel "The Coffin" because that is what it looks like in the video?
As a Japanese, I also highly recommend all viewers here to get food in grocery stores coz it’s way cheaper than convenience store :)
More like inconvenience store.

That style of western breakfast is called モーニング "Morning" and is quite common in Nagoya.

I love how honest you are about the reviews Hannah!! Please make a lot more videos! Would love to see your channel grow a lot bigger!!
