Stock engine in the 1976 cross-country was a 340 cc dual carb single pipe, free air Suzuki. It had special porting developed by the race team to get the engine to about 56 hp. It wasn’t very reliable so the next year they went to an LC 340 based on the 1977 Z oval racer. This FA 340 has more in common with the 500cc FA trail engine than the tiny lightweight Jag 340. Being a race sled, most were mauled racing. Quite often you’ll find one where the chassis was good enough to be saved, but the high strung 340 mod motor was tossed in favor of the same hp put out by the 500 from the stock Pantera. It was a bolt in swap and much more durable for its day. The owners would retire the sled from racing and turn it into a cruiser.
Ran across a Cross Country Cat in my Dad's Sled shed when he passed. Dad being a Cat, Dealer from 1969 to 1981. And took on Kawasaki, Yamaha and John Deere along the way as well. In his 300'x80' shop I had the pleasure of liquidation of the nearly 200 sleds he had taken in trade and several 70's Model Cats, Kawasaki and JD still in Factory Crates. Once I announced a Sale. Everything was gone within 2 weeks.
Wow!!!! Excellent find , they actually only made 625 of the 76 ccc, and only 125 of the race addition , they way to tell them apart is the twin pipes and that extra upper boggie wheel ( the bolt goin through the tunnel decal) looks like yours has both !!! Excellent find congrats !!!!
would love to see the progress on this sled
