- Welcome to the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, found just outside of the port of Naples. Herculaneum was buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Today we are uncovering the mysteries of this ancient city with an up close walking tour. What makes Herculaneum special is the chance to piece together an ancient society - how they lived and aspects of daily life.
Herculaneum is named for the mythical Greek god, Hercules. Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii, so many of the buildings were opulent and richly decorated.
The Romans didn’t know the Mountain was a volcano and were not aware of its danger. Their peace and prosperity were shortly lived. When the eruption hit, there was panic and confusion. Today it lies dormant, looming above the ruins with modern homes precariously built right in front.
If you close your eyes, you can almost hear and sense the Roman life going on around you - it’s truly like a living museum. The area included public buildings, elegant villas, markets, and bathhouses.
In the Antiquarium, we find treasures of the site from glass beaded jewelry, mosaics, earrings, and gold bracelets that would still be in style today. Other items include symbols of wealth such as gold coins, glass vases, surgery tools, and stamps of the family names.
The Boat Pavilion houses a wooden boat found near the bank of the port of Herculaneum, overturned by the violent flow of lava mud.

Just so you know the wind played a Hugh factor in this. That day the wind was blowing towards Herculaneum and Pompeii had wind blown Opposite direction venice would be in ruin today.
Venice is a long way from Naples. Are you sure about this?
No way. Venice is about 350 miles away from Pompeii
