- Subnautica is a game that deserves to be played. It's charming, beautiful, spooky and atmospheric, and I played through it from start to finish in awe at how well it pieced everything together.

I can strongly recommend trying this in vr. The controls are a bit cluncky at first, but the experience of seeing a reaper with the size of a jetplane swimming towards you is unreal.

@@sevenhundred77_ I don't think it runs in 2 different perspectives which means that all it has to do is copy the view instead of rendering 2 different perspectives like most games in VR, basically ends up using very little extra power than running it flat

This game has so many "wow moments" its really quite special.
It also has a lot of AHHH moments like the reaper leviathan chasing you when trying to get to the Aurora

I never had an encounter with a reaper in the game. I think I only saw one once at the Aurora. I think I only ever had to hide from Ghosts in the Reef, and I killed the babies, as well as the sea dragon.
The Leviathans are all overblown.
@@niofalpha Reaper leviathans are the only one that 100% kill you immidiatly upon catching if you're not using any vehicle, they will destroy seamoth very quickly and damage badly the cyclops, even though they are not the #1 leviathan. The only reason they dont attack immediatly is the way they hunt: they will know your location only by roaring, so if you hear them roar it's best to move quickly as you can, before you get in their line of sight.
I probably sunk more hours into subnautica than any other game in 2019. Every other game gets a little exhausting after a while... another match, another thing to build, another mission... but subnautica you can just swim around and eat everything

The first playthrough on this game is one of the best gaming experiences. It does unfortunately lose so much mystique on subsequent playthroughs. That being said the first time delving deeper into the ocean, hearing the echoing cry of a reaper after having read its bio "it hunts through echolocation, if you can hear it, it can see you" truly sent shivers down my spine.
I was searching for wreckage parts at night at one point, and then the system said "Detecting multiple leviathon class life forms in your area. Are you sure what you're doing is worth it?" Never has a game gave me the feeling that message did haha.
interestingly enough I found that the dlc/sequel below zero actually recaptured that feeling of terror at the noises you're hearing and places you're exploring, with new animals and some that actually have some varied ai to some degree. and far more leviathans. would definitely recommend giving it a look when it is finished.

A totally different but interesting take on first person survival can be found in ‘The Long Dark’. I like the slow deaths that game can bring as you try to walk to the cabin ahead while freezing to death. It’s intense and scary in a very different way

That game was indeed an unique and amazing experience. Also went in blind and was immediately in love with the world and the story. It was even a little spooky and scary sometimes, especially diving into the black, unknown depths made the game even more thrilling!

This is definitely one of the scariest games I have ever played. The music, the story, the lighting, the environment and the foes creates this truly spooky game. I jumped out of my seat the first time a saw a Ghost Leviathan. Then I got even more scared when my PDA told me it was a juvenile!
First time in a deep cave is so memorable

God, I love this game! Such an atmospheric, mysterious masterpiece. It's also great in VR! I want to play the sequel, but I figure I'll wait until it hits version 1.0.
Philip, I urge you to check out The Outer Wilds. It just released on Steam, and gives a similar sense of mystery and awe, especially if you go in blind. I would recommend it 100% to anyone who craves the open sense of adventure and discovery That Subnautica provided.
Subnautica is absolutely stunning in VR, it makes you feel as if you were actually in the middle of the ocean as you swim around and see the cool looking fish. Once I played the VR version, I could never go back to the regular version.
My first playthrough was in vr and its one of my favorite vr games.

@@sci_pain3409 I've heard that too, but from my experience, It's really good and is very immersive. There is no motion controller support so you may use your touch controllers/vive wands, or you can use an xbox/playstation controller which is what I use.

I closed the video after you mentioned that one should play this game before watching your video. I then bought the game and 12 gameplay hours later Ive now returned to confirm that trusting your judgement was the right move. I absolutely loved it. I virtually never play single player games or "horror" games for that matter and wouldve never tried this if it wasnt for your recommendation. The feeling of exploration and atmosphere are what makes it for me. Im also a sucker for base building and I find the module system very pleasant. Now after typing this I will finally watch the rest of your video so thanks for having good taste, philip.

@@2kliksphilip Ah ok, the Reapers can bug out and come there sometimes. I was wondering because you said they restricted the play area, which is the Adult Ghost Leviathans job. They are the biggest hostile entity in the game and spawn within some time when you go off the map into the abyss.
Had one of those attacked me, I would have quit for good.

@@Tim_593 I decided to save and and (without many items) go down this huge, bare cliff out of curiosity knowing I'd probably get my ass handed to me eventually. I managed to get about 1600 metres down, having swam quickly past all three ghost Leviathan and just dying from lack of oxygen 😅 Turns out I was just at the end of the map and was too dumb to realise there was LITERALLY nothing there and that the Ghost Leviathans were just designed to scare me back up onto the map 😅
I had a glitch where the sea dragon was swimming in the air inside the biggest alien facility
@@2kliksphilip Pretty sure that was less of a glitch and more of an oversight (if not intended). I know because I had a similar experience and later found out that a reaper patrols near that particular area kelp, and that its aggro range extends into the kelp. If you're a bit unlucky, you can aggro the sucker it without knowing.
This is assuming that it didn't happen in the direct vicinity of your escape pod ofc.

It has been years since videos/trailers of a game has ever interested me in its potential gameplay and world, but Subnautica was the one that made me buy and play a new game in a long, long time. I absolutely love the world, atmosphere and creatures. Yeah, the hostile creature scripting is not that impressive after you've gotten to know their patterns (and they can be easily put out of action with an OP weapon), but the first encounters are still quite scary (mainly through sound cues). I forget who did a review on Subnautica and pointed out the sound design being one of the most impressive and influential aspects of the game, both in quality and playing experience, but that is basically my take on the game as well. Without the sound design it would have been pretty and provide ample exploration opportunities, but it would not have been the lively and rich (and sometimes spooky with crabsquids or leviathans) world it is now. I also liked the voice clips and hints that developed the story as you go and explore. There are only a few things I think could have been better (some performance related things for example), but I can agree on your statement on subsequent playthroughs. I have not even finished the main story line as I noticed it was going to more and more combat gameplay, but I am happy with the memories I have up until this point (30+hours of exploring and basebuilding). It has been a while since I've enjoyed a game like I did with this one.

@@2kliksphilip In my experience, the game relies on a good overall package (CPU+GPU, similar to GTA 5). E.g., I had a noticeable performance drop when playing the game and watching 1080p60 or 2160p videos on UA-cam in the background, but lowering that to 480p or stopping it entirely would result in 60+ fps again (R9 290 + R7 1700X). So perhaps something was running in the background or taking up a higher priority as a task in your case, before the restart.
There are multiple 'fixes' for fps-drops in certain areas or looking in certain directions, or overall subpar (hehe) performance. Things such as: setting core affinity to 0,2,4,6 with >4 core CPU's; clearing game cache; resetting spawned items; checking buggy base modules (e.g. in my case, foundations) and more. Just mentioning it here in case someone comes across this comment.
My favorite part of the sound design, other than the one song in the blood kelp zone, is probably the dead zone. You enter and it's a sheer drop, yet pitch-black even at surface level, but all music, normally consistently there everywhere else, cuts out. You have just the sounds of your movement and the ghost leviathans charging at you through the darkness, pushing you back. There's nothing more than the data entry out there for anyone, and it's not even possible to reach what little is at the bottom legitimately - even a fully upgraded prawn suit is destroyed not even halfway down, and there isn't enough titanium on the map to build a seabase that deep - maybe two thirds of what you'd need. The sound (and visual) design tells you that straight from the beginning, quite clearly - there nothing to see, nothing to hear, and nothing to find.
Oh yes! This game is criminally underrated! It's insanely good, and a fantastic example of an actual successful early access game that's gotten finished.

I loved outer Wilds, it was my favorite game of 2019, but, as you've undoubtedly seen while reading the Steam Reviews, if you have, it is not a game for everyone. If a person doesn't enjoy it after spending 2 hours, that's that - the game won't get more enjoyable for that person no matter how much more time he were to spend with it. So, Philip, if you see this, check the game out, get your hopes up seeing it's absolute critical acclaim, and get bored immediately, that's alright.

Outside of a first person perspective there is literally no similarity between the games.
I got into subnautica in 2015, with the promise that it was just a game along the lines of underwater minecraft, and over the next 4 years just had my mind blown by the atmosphere and details that unknown worlds had created, the flora and fauna range from cute and petite to monsterous and terrifying. And the sounds! The startling roar of the reaper leviathan, and the crabsquid's creaking and clicking were bone chilling the first timea i heard them. The first time i saw a reefback or sea treader i was in awe at the scale of them, and how small they could make you feel. Added to all of this a genuinely interesting progression system, where you seek out to find out the mysteries of planet 4546b, just so you can escape. The first time i finished the rocket, i didnt really want to take off, because i had built my own network of bases across the map, and was enjoying myself too much. Its one of my top 5 games I've ever played, for sure
The thing about you knowing what kind of situation you are about to witness based on the music is something really special, I encounter it all the time in ARK: Survival evolved

@@2kliksphilip It's definitely not optimal for a full (first) playthrough, but it's great for separate expeditions or sunday rides to soak in the atmosphere. A rough port in many ways, but I greatly enjoyed the moments of absolutely paralyzing terror being in the deep voids gave.
@@2kliksphilip I've heard the Beta branch fixes most of the issues the original build has if you're not feeling like modding. I did do my playthrough in VR and I didn't regret it. It feels rough in places, but seeing the scale of the ocean is just incomparable to anything.

this is the one game that i can play hours without stopping. exploring the unknown. running from reapers. the beautiful cave system. and the music. my god. the music is so good and perfect with the atmosphere this game gives.
Subnautica is one of the best gaming experiences I ever had and if you never played it I feel a little envy . . . The pure terror an tension when exploring certain places is among the most intense I'v ever felt, just the clip you showed when descending down the Blood kelp forest gets my heart pumping again. As you said, I probably never will pay the game again, the memories are so good and the beautiful ting was to not know what would happen and how deep you can go. Really enjoyed the video!

Actually, you can feed the stalker with a peeper and he will become friendly and bring you salvage for a short time, so not every creature is the same.

I played through subnautica over a weekend and it was honestly legendary. The way your world expands as your gear improves, and forces you out of your comfort zone is really sweet, and by the end of the game everything feels like less of a mystery and it all comes together really wonderfully. Good stuff overall
I was completely amazed the first time I played this. It was a slow start as I learned how to get pure water, what items to look for, how to make gathering easier. I didn't traverse too far from my pod because I was afraid that I would not get back before running out of supplies. After I got the seaglide I felt more confident in going further. My first expedition was towards the crashed ship, and of course I was immediately killed by a leviathan. At the same time the computer was telling me that I needed to prevent the ship from a devastating explosion. I knew that I couldn't reach it safely in time. It was a shame because I really wanted to explore the SOS signal from one of the other crashed pods.Then she told me that it would explode in 2 hours. I deduced that the massive explosition would reach the pod and permakill me so I climbed to the top of the pod to view the event. She counted down and I expected the worst but I didn't die. Suddenly I realized that I could keep playing.
I started planning for another expedition to one of the crashed pods. After exploring that area which was quite deep at the time I went back and got another message on the radio. They had found me and we were to meet at a certain location. I took my trusty seaglide, food and water and went off. I was surprised and intrigued that there was land that I could embark on. And this is where the truly awe inspiring moment happened. As they were landing I suddenly realized that the structure was a building and it was shooting down the ship. I felt excitedment but also fear in the realization that there might be hostile aliens on the planet. But the curiousity got the better of me. I decided to explore the building. As I entered the building I was struck by awe again. Still scared, moving slowly and prepared to dash for the water at the earliest sight of an alien I continued. I soon realized that it was deserted and the mystery increased.
After this I progressed faster, creating the seamoth and cyclops. For everything that I could create I was again amazed because my world was always increasing. I never realized I could make a submarine. The same thing happened when I realized that I could make my own base. That was mind blowing. My world had been the pod. My base had always been the pod. Now I could make a custom base wherever I wanted with all the equipment and storage space I needed (I used to have so many floating storages before).
There are so many great moments in this game. Finally exploring the crashed ship. The fear when being attacked in the cyclops and having to quickly put out the fire, then going out in the dark to repair the hull. The unsettling feeling when you dive deep for the first time.
I wasn't that reliant on food or water in the late game since I had made 3 water purification machines and always had 4 with me, and with the thermal knife food was always there. In the end I felt that I ruled the ocean and I was a bit sad when I left. I know that it didn't matter but I made sure to store plenty of water, food, batteries and energy cells when I left. Also plenty of gold, diamonds, ion cubes etc. It felt nice that I was leaving with some valuables
You NEED to play Outer Wilds (not Outer Worlds). It's like a breed between Subnautica and The talos principle (I've played and love both btw). Just look att the reviews! 4.9/5. Thank me later
Yes! Philip is almost definitely a person with enough patience and sense of wonder to like that game. That's the only thing you really need: a "want" to explore. Go in blind, don't even watch the trailer ideally. It's wondrous, not too demanding (in a similar way to Subnautica - not really difficult or requiring too much thinking, but there is still some), extremely pretty and if you are like me, mindblowing all the time.
Outer wilds, too, can only really be experienced onced. And when you learn anything about it, when you play through it, it will never be the same.
@@amunak_ Outer Wilds ? I loved both Subnautica and The talos principle, so I looked it up. It seems to a rogue-like ? I have not read a lot about it because I don't want to ruin the experience if I end up playing it, but unfortunately I absolutely despise rogue likes. I've made the mistake before of buying a sequel to a game I loved, even if this sequel was a rogue like unlike its predecessor, and it was unbearable like it always is. Sucks to be me I guess. I don't understand why I hate them so much.
It's a bit pretentious and missing any real point, but it's a very interesting experience. Totally worth grabbing on sale.

To put this in the least spoilery way, its a space exploration game set in a single solar system with filled with very creative planets, like, seriously, some of them are really rad. Some planets are big, and some are small enough to walk fully around within 2 minutes, but no matter the size they still have things to find. The goal is to discover and explore the solar system to figure out a story and a mystery, slowly piecing things together from places all over the system. There are some really cool game mechanics and concepts that really boggle your mind. And the thing that might be getting you confused with a rogue like you'll find out pretty early on in. Short answer, no, not a rogue like, no like loot stuff or special abilities, just self paced exploration with no boundaries on what order you figure things out in, with a neat twist to keep you on your toes. idk man i just like space

Figuring out what lies deep into the water is the most satisfying thing about the game. That wonder, that mystery, that curiosity. Once you know everything though it becomes less exciting.
This video really doesn't go into enough just how much mystery and story there is in this game. There's ALOT of crazy shit that happens which I don't think is given justice by the video.

No problem! I ended up not using it at all because I kept my radiation suit but it was there and it could have saved me the trouble of building the water purificator in my cave base

I just watched this video, and the way you described Subnautica is exactly the way I feel about Outer Wilds (in the sense of an adventure on alien worlds). This game is easily my favorite game of 2019 and one of my favorite games ever. So as other comments already said, I would highly suggest playing it.

This is one of those games I wish I could play for the first time again. Your first encounter with a reaper, entering the blood kelp zone... so many awesome moments.
The music in this game is what grabbed me initially. The music absolutely entranced me helping understand how truly horrifying the depths of an alien ocean can be when it's left to the imagination. My god this game is so In depth I struggle to put the beauty of the atmosphere into words.
It was quite fun to come to the realization that no matter how big or terrifying the creatures are, they're just seeking out food, or defending their territory. They're not monsters designed to hunt you down (minus the ones literally for that purpose) and you can honestly find ways to almost get along with even the biggest and scariest ones.
I am really happy that you enjoyed the game. I installed it a month after its full release and I was stunned. This game is that kind of a game when you remember it you just get wonderful memories. I recommend that you don't play again for a while because, as you said it will get a little bit boring. I just finished it again few months ago after I forgotten about it. It is just an amazing and well structured game.
In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with NOT replaying a game because you wish to preserve the memories you have and not spoil them with new one. You can't edit memories, they just are. They're priceless.

Sadly I didn’t get the fresh experience when playing it for the first time because the thing that convinced me to play it was watching one of my favorite youtubers do a play through. Nevertheless I still love this game and it’s one of the times I’ve felt genuine fear from a game. You said you never got into the cyclops and base building but those are probably my favorite parts. One of my favorite things I did when I got my first cyclops was customizing it to my liking filling it with planters, boxes, posters, chairs, and all the good stuff. Also I got a lot of satisfaction having an entire wall in the storage bay being sorted for each item type. The base building is also pretty forgiving and fun and it’s a lot of fun planning out a giant base and deciding what goes where.
Ahh, it's great to see that you've played and enjoyed this game. Subnautica is one of my favorite games of all time. When I first found out about it, I just watched some parts of a playthrough and after I actually bought it, I realized my computer wasn't powerful enough to run it. So I just made do with videos for years, until finally I had a good enough PC to run the game at playable speeds. (although not optimal) Playing the game I craved so much for years for the first time was a magical experience. Yes, I knew ins and outs of the game, so I didn't get the "blind experience" but I'd say this was a whole another experience that was amazing.
I now have a decent computer that can run the game at max settings, and I'm planning on playing it again soon, this time on Hardcore mode. Time to dive back into this spectacular world.

I have Thalassophobia. I bought Subnautica to try to help me with it. I will never forget the horror of the glitched Stalker. That thing... first off, the top half of the model acted like it was dead, and just kind of acted like an extra appendage that the AI could not move. It just dragged in the water. The second thing that made this demon a freaking pain was that it didn't react to the metal scrap and it just tanked damage. It never retreated from me (I hit it with a knife about 3 times before I freaked out). After hiding in my habitat for a few minutes and debating on whether I should go outside or not, I went outside. The damn thing was still out there. This thing followed me from the kelp forest and into the safe shallows. It's something else to turn around in a small cave in the shallows and to find a glitched stalker mid - bite.

Subnautica is such a gem, so much fun to play and so satisfying to make progress, every hurdle you overcome feels like a really big deal and I love it.
Subnautica's music is something I will forever sing my praises for (pun intended). It does such a perfect job of capturing, and setting, the mood for every bit of the game. Also, has anyone else ever taken their cyclops to the rendezvous island only to discover that a ghost leviathan lives down there? I that a real memory I have or am I making stuff up?

When I was watching your video about Valves new anti-cheat and saw Subnautica in your Steam I thought 'hey, I wonder if a Subnautica video is coming along' and well here it is. Subnautica is a fantastic game and one of my all time favourites. Sadly I haven't been able to replay it much (it obviously doesn't have the same 'wow' on repeat playthroughs) but I've been holding off on below zero and am really looking forward to it!

This is the only game that has every made me cry as an teen. Having all 3 of the cuddelfish then saying goodbye along with following the game since the earliest public versions made me cry tears of joy knowing that this game was finnaly completed and absoluty incredible.

i agree with your philosophy. Those Atmosphere based games are so much better on the first playtrough, when you are still curious. And lost in the forgein world.
I've replayed Subnautica multiple times on all difficulties and I still find myself going back every so often to play every day for a couple of weeks. I am still discovering new areas, like behind the Aurora wreck for example, and it is marvelous. Obviously, some of the scare factor is lost due to my familiarity with the creatures and how to evade them, but the replay ability to make new bases, see and be inspired by what others have made via Time Capsules, and just the feeling of peace the game gives me is so wonderful; its like therapy, honestly.

I have finished it, and I started playing it back before when it is being fully finished. Seen it's changes, and amazing additions, sad removals, and any other else things that happened in the development. Amazing game 🙌
"No Man's Sky may feature a trillion planets, but Subnautica's one underwater volcano is the one I'd rather explore". So true, procedural programming can't hold a candle to well thought out hand-crafted exploration. Maybe someday we'll get the best of both worlds.

I played a portion of this game mere days before this video was uploaded, this is what i have to add:
The maps is much, much smaller than it first comes off as, you might have gone all the way across the map and look back at the survival pod and see you're only 1000m away and you can clearly see it on the surface, although, that dosnt take away from the game, once you've made your way about 500m away from the pod, the scenario is completely diffrent and its all wonderful in its own ways. The game can and will become very repetitive unless you chose to not do those repetitive things, you can either stay on the surface and gather resources, just enough to survive or you can go down into those underwater caves, kilometers under the surface and progress and get new and better resources, the game will become repetitive unless you make an effort for it to not be repetitive.
@@2kliksphilip I can agree with you there, but i think that when you go into this game nearly 100% blind, the map feels vast enough yet too small, big enough that you have to plan whenever you're going for an expedition, yet small enough that going there dont feel like enough, although the long and vast cave systems underground feels like it could have something more, some side missions maybe, some grand mystery with it, in the end, what i really liked about the game is the mystery of whats underneath, infront and/or behind you at all times, i wish there would be more of that.
@@macke2879 I would personally argue that the map is perfect size. Its just big enough for it to feel expansive and mysterious, but not too big that learning how to navigate it would be impossible, one of my favorite parts of the game was mapping out the world in my head, building a detailed mental image of what is where, and how to get there.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the game. I fully recommend watching the any% speedrun of this game. It's pretty mind blowing :)
I've 127 hours on Subnautica. ~40 hours of playing story, exploring and building bases. 1 Hardcore playthrough (with a bunch of retries) and modding after that. Lots of mods available with QoL features, a map, decoration, balancing and graphic improvements. Incredible soundtrack and seeing the game now again I immediately want to play it blind again. A new Subnautica is already in development, so there is hope for a similar experience

i failed it 3 times but was really happy until beating it that way
1st Fail : i got blown up by 4 Crashfishes 5 min into the game
2nd Fail : i got stuck in a Cave and didnt manage to reach the surface in time
3rd Fail : got eaten by the adult Ghost of the Grand Reef who sneaked up on me while i was Collecting stuff

Even though I have thalassophobia I still love this game. I guess that's why I and many other people love it. It wasn't originally supposed to be horror, but it builds so much atmosphere it feels so real that it doesn't need basic jumpscares or scripted sequences to keep you on edge. I didn't feel like the main character. I felt like I was just trying to survive.
I'm currently taking a break from my Talos Principle binge-sitting, I thought about it the very second I clicked play on this video. The intro confirms that I live in a simulation.
Having played none of these games, Subnautica, Outer Wilds and No Man's Sky, in principle they sound a lot like Starcontrol 2 / The Ur-Quan Masters (opensource port), Subnautica coming the closest. Gathering resources, venturing further every trip, upgrading various aspects while not exactly knowing what is to come. Learning bits and pieces of information, leading to more and more story as you follow the hints.
I played Subnautica during the early Access and i absolutely love it!
I am both sad and proud to have played it already during development.
Proud because I felt like i was part of a Community on a journey to craft an awesome game about adventure and discovery.
And Sad because I would never be able to really feel the feeling of exploration and the magic of a blind Subnautica playtrough as I had to replay the game after every major update and i lost the feeling of discovery. But i never lost my passion for this amazing game.
I went into this game expecting something akin to minecraft, a creativity tool for younger folks that alot of people seemed to like, and just like minecraft it blew me away. I've been coherently playing games for almost two decades, played the original doom and quake, fought my way through black mesa and through the mid 2000s explosion of games, but subnautica will always have a special place in my heart. I'm happy you liked it and i hope others discover what a gem it truly is.
P.S. Kudos for allowing people to discover the really cool stuff on their own, its too easy for youtubers to put the flashiest stuff on screen or on their thumbnails.
