Not really in the Highlands wars were very much a last last resort, feuds were generally handled by one on one combat either by the individuals or by a member of the warrior group. These duels were also never to the death but to first blood.
I have some Irish friends and I’m Scottish and we learn about history like this from our school, I want to be able to understanding and learn from this

@@harrypmay you do know what Tánaiste means ? Im not referring to the title now used by the head of government. As an irish word the meaning can often depend on the context. Mac is son so harry Mac an Tánaiste is "Harry son of the heir" in my unprofessional opinion. Based on what I just heard and if I understood it correctly that changes should your father pass before your grandfather(the leader) and you would be the nephew of the heir. I hope you have pleasurably and successful journey on this exploration.

I’m a Scots born ,Irish and Norse lineage offspring of the Gallowglass MacPhaidin (McFadden) of Mull who settled in Donegal after the First Wars of Scottish Independence and latterly the Norman Invasion of Ireland at the behest of the O’Neill
@@Clans_Dynasties It was a typo sorry MacPhaidin which subsequently became McFadden in Ireland .There is a lot of confusion as regards the name McFadden which I think is mostly due in part to the fact Historians in Scotland don’t tend to go back far enough on Mull In regard the McLeans who were granted the land post Wars of Independence. The old History is written by the victors applied here I should imagine. The McFaddens were politically aligned to the McDougal clan and were subsequently on the wrong side of the argument of who had the claim to the throne. As a result of losing the claim our Clan were stripped of their Land and found themselves homeless for a period but being Gallowglass soon found a new home in Ireland. My family returned to Scotland after the famine and found a new home on an island less than 70 miles from Mull. We always assumed we were Irish but it turns out it was a wee bit more complicated than that.

Its striking to me that this clan system functions nearly identical to how early ancient humans organized. Like an upscaled version of a modern military company of 200 to 250 men.
If you wanna see clan systems in action today, check out Somali clans, these are more ancient than irish or Scottish clans, and are strictly based on paternal descent, we also have Xeer (anglicised as Heer law of Somalis), a customary legal system that is based on social insurance for all lineages of the clans
It's my humble opinion that Clan Cambell was responsible for the anarchy in that particular part of the Country .Hence the term .NEVER ! EVER TRUST A CAMBELL.
Done the research on my father's side of the family. My grandmother's family was dutch and my grandfather's was Scots-irish, from the clan sempill of renfrewshire Scotland, then castlefin, county Donegal Ireland and later to America 1730. Came here to watch this video to understand clans. It's all so humbling in the grand scheme of things
There is no such thing as 'Scots-Irish', this is a made up Americanism that doesn't exist anywhere in either the Kingdom of Scotland or the EU province of Rep.Ireland. The whole clan phenomenon isn't really an Irish thing either, in fact it isn't even a Scottish national thing either as it was historically a Norse thing. Most of the actual Scots lived in the East Coast in fact than the West. Most Americans who had ancestors from the UK were actually Border reavers who were neither Scottish nor English, they didn't consider themselves either nationality, they identified with clan names more than they did with nationalities/ethnicities, much like their modern day distant mixed descended Yankee fake plastic paddies and American styro fake Scots from America do today who don't like to think of themselves as American either, even though their immediate and most related ancestors were Yankee cowboy outlaws and cattle rustlers etc and their people - Yanks, are a distinct northern American tribe of people that have been around since as early as 1492, the medieval age. Meaning that most modern Americans, as well as being largely the most mixed people on earth today and being American by native nationality and American by ethnicity, are actually descended from stateless criminals who weren't considered Scottish or even English back then and infact were even actually old enemies of both the Scottish and the English and would actually even attack both Scots and English crossing the borderlands adjacent to the Debatable lands that neither the Kingdoms of Scotland or England had jurisdiction over. As such, the debatable lands was rife with crime such as arson, murder and robbery etc, they were eventually gotten rid of and conquered by the Kingdom of Scotland when James VI of Scots took over the English throne in 1603, giving him complete control over both sides of the Reiver populated Debatable adjacent lands which were in the middle in between both the Kingdoms of Scotland and England, and were first either executed for serious crimes or deported as stateless criminals to Ulster in Northern Ireland. But this managed to work out that way because under James VI of Scots, he now had jurisdiction in Ireland also because Ireland had been a part of the Kingdom of England since the Laudibiliter Papal Bull was arranged between Pope Adrian IV and Henry II of England which was after Dermod MacMurrough - the Hiberni (Irish) King of Leinster asked for English help in getting his lands back from other rival petty Hiberni/Irish Kingdoms, and Henry II lent him English troops which solidified English intervention there in the South of Ireland amongst the Hiberni (the real Irish of that time) to initially keep the peace. So when James VI of Scots took the English throne as well, this gave him power over Ireland as well as England, because Ireland was a Papal possession under the Kingdom of England.
@@RR-pe5or there is no kingdom of Scotland to be honest there ran completely from old English torys. Scotland haven't even been a state since 1707 its essentially ran by unelected englishmen while most of ireland is independent (it all should have been independent because of the 1918 election) which the brits met with violence Ireland was colonised and subjected to brutal british rule for centuries and relegated as second class citizens in there own country by unelected old men in Britain They held an election where 76% of the population voted for independence in 1918 and where still not granted independence and Britain backed the loyalist minority (who were maybe 20%) with guns weapons and so on So the irish people had a right to fight for there independence by any means necessary because they had a democratic mandate by the irish people and were not granted there democratic rights which over 76% voted for in a democratic election that's it!!!!
The clan system in Ireland clearly predates the Norse invasion as does Brehon Law. The Annals of Ulster record indisputable proof of both predating any Viking influence in Ireland. Therefore the clan system in Ireland is undoubtedly Gaelic in origin and, as a result, the Scottic clan system in Scotland will also be predominantly Gaelic in origin as the Gaelic colonisation of Scotland also predates any Norse influence. @@RR-pe5or

Thank you for a very erudite explanation of this rather complex subject. For me it particularly cleared up the Irish system, which has long been murky in my knowledge base.
Fascinating. I've been told I have Irish heritage, and then perhaps it's really Scottish. I don't know. I know at least one must be true though, because my mother named me Shaun, mistakenly believing that was the Irish speling; and I love whiskey and beer! Americans are often lost regarding heritage... :)
The biggest issue I find with Americans remembering their heritage is the fact that Britain founded America all the minorities just look at us is white they don't care what we are English Scottish Irish French Spanish German Norwegian or any of that how I have people get mad at me when I talk about my great-grandmother who is native with how white I am
This was really good. How was this affected during the time the Vikings were in control for a couple of hundred years? I was wondering if this system may have been disrupted as the various clan leaders were closely allied and intermarrying with the Vikings. Whose system prevailed during that time? Or was all of this just after the Vikings?
Thank you for the '3 Fish Salute' during the intro.. 😉... Rock, rock on!... Cheers for this, from a fairly distant kin... Well there is a limerick branch of the family i cant remember of the top of my head if they are a Dal gCais clan but its not improbable, although saying that the coat of arms for alot of the families in Ireland are a fairly modern addition and often assigned to multiple similar surnames of different origins, its still great to see them, i still like coming across mine whenever i do.
Thanks for posting, after an American tourist "bought the rights to be identified as chief of my clan" from the armourers hall in 1982, I had always felt a great sense of injustice, my father taught me many bits of family history, our war cry in archaic Irish, (totally different from anything written or published) the family seat of our line etc, We were Brian Boru's champion swordsmen. It's a relief to see the true brehon laws laid out, even if they are a bit confusing at first! Eile-Au'Cearbhill, of the black tower!
Thank you, its nice that your family has still kept those traditions alive and passing along your history, it would be nice if we could reinstate some of these traditions and law within our clan revival projects.
@@Dreyno kinda how I feel, it all began when the yank saw our family Crest in the genealogical museum (ironically it was donated from my late grandfathers estate when his house was broken up, certain antiques and important historical bits went to various museums throughout Ireland) well this American approached the armourer and purchased the "right" to be identified as chief of the name! I guess I can accept it if that is just a modern technical title, but it's galling to think he may have actually thought that a couple of £££ punts made him an actual "cheif" or indeed that the armourer (some random person) had any authority in my household to distribute "titles" without our permission! On the other hand, if the yanks keep it in perspective, and it brings people happiness and community (as long as they don't too deeply indulge any delusions of grandeur) then I'm happy for them! I think the original yank has now passed on to a son or grandson who styles himself "prince"! Whatever.
I'm still not sure I understand how the Irish clans work. When you say "descenfants of a common granfather", whose grandfather are we talking about? The clan leader's? Each individual clan member's?
You know this kind of makes me wonder if England would of had a clan system and how it would operate if we wasn't conquered by Anglo Saxons and romans before that.
Excellent explanation. I thought that land was distributed through kinship - I think a widow lost her claim on the land, but her male children could claim land?
Ah that explains "The standard bearer" title in Ireland I was always curious about that. Allegedly I'm descended from Cathair Mor, but how they know that is beyond me.
Il go more into hereditary titles very soon, As for your descent, Irish genealogy was very important in irish culture, oral tradition and descent was passed on from generation to generation by elders, poets amongst others and then eventually recorded by monks and clan scribes.
I have a mix of both. My father’s line seems to have migrated from Wales to Ireland and one of the great grandmothers from my mom’s side was of the clan Treacy. But there’s also Scottish ancestry on both sides according to the genealogy and DNA. I’ve often wished I hadn’t inherited the fair Irish skin…cannot spend much time in the sun at all.
Hi, the "Clans" system has and still is all over the world im every culture, although the term Clan(n) is Gaelic, There are arguments that the Picts were matrilineal and this changed as irish tribes migrated into scotland, again this part of the argument is hotly debated in historical circles, so to anwer your question the Scottish clan system seems to be a hybrid of Irish and Picts systems, i will do a video diving so much deeper soon.

Hi, It was really interesting, including as a historian by education, with absolutely respect to Celtic peoples, countries, cultures, from Southeastern European country, Caucasus Iberia- Georgia, by Black Sea. Ireland, Scotland are such beautiful countries. Also, just in case, there are 3 Iberia in Europe, Spanish Iberia, or Iberian Peninsula, Irish Iberia and Georgian Iberia in Caucasus. Also, just in case, connection with all this, I will note some details about the manifestation in different forms, historical ties, and specifically Georgians in Caucasus, Etruscans in Italy, Corsicans in Corsica, Picts in Britain, Spanish Iberians in Spain and other Iberian, Ibero/ Celtic peoples have same ethno, ethnic origin and represent Iberian race, Iberian, Ibero/ Celtic peoples of Europe and this is why all these listed peoples ( together with originality of each of these ethno, ethnic peoples) have similarities, identical in different forms of culture, in folk music, dance, in ancient architectural style and so on. Also Georgians cultures of different historical times are European ( together with their own culture/ cultures, influences with different European cultures, beginning from ancient times, influences with ancient Greek civilizations, cultures, with Roman cultures, later with Byzantine/East Roman culture, with Catholic Europe and other European cultures during all historical periods in history of Georgians, Georgia, subsequently, among other European cultures, having the closest relationship also with Russian culture ) and of course, all these things proven historically/scientifically by World's, European ( including Georgian) historians/scientists, and this is why Georgians ( Georgia's) European/Western way is absolutely naturally and historically right way to returning to their European roots, which means their true Georgians roots in this South- Eastern, Caucasus region of Europe, where Georgia itself is located and this is how vast majority of Georgians consider themselves and their country. Just in case, about the ethnic appearance of Georgians, here are some examples: pin.it/1DrndwF pin.it/7HDlbqr pin.it/Y7XZpbu pin.it/1DvQMoo pin.it/5Qvb8zN pin.it/3akg9wv pin.it/7oZQbO4 pin.it/60iJuUt pin.it/5Ne6tWN In addition, I note that Georgians, like Corsicans, Picts, Etruscans, Spanish Iberians and other peoples belong to the Iberian race, the Iberian peoples of Europe and have a kinship etno relationship to Celts through those peoples who have both Iberian and Celtic ethno origin, these last, such peoples live in a certain part of Spain, Britain, Scotland and so on., and there is also a historical opinion that a certain part of the Celts was also mixed with the West Georgian ethnic peoples in their time. From all that has been said, Georgians also have an ethno-cultural attitude towards the Celts in a certain way, which also manifests itself in certain Georgian folk songs, melodies, in dances, for example, the dance "Khorumi" and so on, also proven by archaeological / cultural data. There are also 3 Iberia, Spanish Iberia, Georgian Iberia and Irish Iberia, etc. It is through these mentioned factors that Georgians also have an ethnically related relationship with the Celts. Sincerely, Alex.
Thank you for that amazing read, 8 have to admit im a fan of Armenian and Georgian familys such as the famous Bagrationi and the Artsruni, i would have loved to cover there history on this channel, i feel that might be a long way off, if ever. Thank you again though.
@@Clans_Dynasties Thank you very much for your interest, also about the Georgian royal dynasty Bagration, just in case, I note that Georgian Bagrations, the Georgian royal dynasty of Bagration, originate from one of the most ancient regions of Georgia - Speri. Based on Georgian historical written sources in Georgian historiography, it is assumed that this family was headed by a feudal bivitrimen family. Everything else is absolutely groundless speculation and legends, artificially created some false ideas of the time, including the false idea that the Bagrations are descendants of the biblical character of David, the Jewish royal dynasty. These invented, historical absolute false ideas, legends, were accepted by representatives of the royal Bagrationi dynasty, because of ideological considerations in those times, that because of their connection with the biblical king David, to prove their divine origin amongst the people and so on and so forth. This was often in vogue, starting before B.C times Pro-Christian times, then the royal rulers of one kingdom or of an empire were descendants of a solar deity, and later descendants of a solar deity turned into descendants of a divine dynasty of the biblical king David and so on and so forth similar invented false notions. It’s just still not makes sense, why all these fictitious ideas were necessary for some representatives of Bagration, when Georgia itself and the Georgian people had such an ancient and self-sufficient Colkhian / Iberian / European culture and the history of the ancient Georgian royal dynasties. At some point here sucsome members of Bagrationi lost their connection with the history of their own country and people. But at the same time, of course, we remember the great representatives of the Georgian Bagrations, like King Bagrati the third, David the fourth "Builder", Queen Tamara and others.
@@Clans_Dynasties For example, during the time of Queen Tamara, in addition to everything, well-known Georgian figures/ feudal lords already demanded a constitutional, monarchical-parliamentary structure Kingdom of Georgia. From King David the "Builder" to King Lasha-Giorgi (the son of Queen Tamara) there was a "golden age" for Georgians, Georgia, besides this, in Georgia also during these times the Renaissance developed and so on, as it happened in other European countries, but after this historical period, unfortunately Georgia was not lucky, at the beginning of the invasion of the Mongol Empire, and then, after the fall of the Eastern Roman / Byzantine Empire (which also represented a geopolitical catastrophe for Georgians, Georgia) invasions from the west of the Ottoman Empire, and from the east of the Persian Empire, also there was no single royal rule in Georgia and so on in those dark, tragic historical periods. To call them family coats of arms is a misnomer, Coats or arms were made for individuals and not inherited by the entire clan, Although i use them to help distinguish clans and familes as most people now associate certain coats of arms with a family, There is very little accurate information on what symbols clans would have flown on their banners although that doesnt mean we have no information, im yet to find a centralised source, i will endeavour to find them for each clan video i do.

I did think about it as technically the era of the clans started during the beginning of the 1st century, unfortunately with modern DNA we can now prove that the Annals Genealogies from the late 6th early 7th century are pretty accurate anything before that is merely myth and legend since everyone has thier own interpretation of these i thought it may upset people especially when dealing with peoples Identity. Who knows it is definitely an era i have a lot of interest in just unsure how to present it.

My Grandfather was born in Clonmany Donegal in 1882. A Michael Doherty.
@@RR-pe5or there is no kingdom of Scotland to be honest there ran completely from old English torys. Scotland haven't even been a state since 1707 its essentially ran by unelected englishmen while most of ireland is independent (it all should have been independent because of the 1918 election) which the brits met with violence
Ireland was colonised and subjected to brutal british rule for centuries and relegated as second class citizens in there own country by unelected old men in Britain
They held an election where 76% of the population voted for independence in 1918 and where still not granted independence and Britain backed the loyalist minority (who were maybe 20%) with guns weapons and so on
So the irish people had a right to fight for there independence by any means necessary because they had a democratic mandate by the irish people and were not granted there democratic rights which over 76% voted for in a democratic election that's it!!!!
@@eileenmacdougall8945 Doherty is a very common name in Donegal and Derry.
@@RR-pe5or

The day some yank tourist informs me he my chief, that’s the day I’ll kick the living shit out of a yank tourist.

The Welsh were hybrid Romano-British and followed a system of tannistry
Excellent explanation. I thought that land was distributed through kinship - I think a widow lost her claim on the land, but her male children could claim land?
Ah that explains "The standard bearer" title in Ireland I was always curious about that. Allegedly I'm descended from Cathair Mor, but how they know that is beyond me.
Il go more into hereditary titles very soon, As for your descent, Irish genealogy was very important in irish culture, oral tradition and descent was passed on from generation to generation by elders, poets amongst others and then eventually recorded by monks and clan scribes.
Big city? You’re a descendent of big city?

Just in case, about the ethnic appearance of Georgians, here are some examples:

pin.it/5Qvb8zN
pin.it/3akg9wv
pin.it/7oZQbO4
pin.it/60iJuUt
pin.it/5Ne6tWN
In addition, I note that Georgians, like Corsicans, Picts, Etruscans, Spanish Iberians and other peoples belong to the Iberian race, the Iberian peoples of Europe and have a kinship etno relationship to Celts through those peoples who have both Iberian and Celtic ethno origin, these last, such peoples live in a certain part of Spain, Britain, Scotland and so on., and there is also a historical opinion that a certain part of the Celts was also mixed with the West Georgian ethnic peoples in their time.

Sincerely, Alex

I think I seen my family coat of arms (Crest?) there. Where can you get information like that on old Irish clans?
To call them family coats of arms is a misnomer, Coats or arms were made for individuals and not inherited by the entire clan, Although i use them to help distinguish clans and familes as most people now associate certain coats of arms with a family, There is very little accurate information on what symbols clans would have flown on their banners although that doesnt mean we have no information, im yet to find a centralised source, i will endeavour to find them for each clan video i do.
Cheers ....thanks for doing the research....really interesting.....
Very interesting, love these explanations. I'm new here & must say you have a lovely accent!! Anything on the Welsh one day? I wouldn't know, but believe they came about later on? Kinda confused by that country and how it fits between Scottish & Irish culture. I've heard it's more liked to Irish but that doesn't make sense in my wee brain...did they even have clans?!
The Irish and Scottish, we're family. My family are Ulster-Scots Catholics and Scottish Catholics🇮🇪☦❤✝🏴
A Christian profile picture? Are you a Christian? Where are you from?
Have you ever through of doing a video on the celtic clan's of the classical world?
I did think about it as technically the era of the clans started during the beginning of the 1st century, unfortunately with modern DNA we can now prove that the Annals Genealogies from the late 6th early 7th century are pretty accurate anything before that is merely myth and legend since everyone has thier own interpretation of these i thought it may upset people especially when dealing with peoples Identity. Who knows it is definitely an era i have a lot of interest in just unsure how to present it.
@@Clans_Dynasties fair enough..but there are accounts of how 'celtic' tribes/clans functioned and even split creating septs
Oh yeah the information is there and i have thought about it, hopefully i will im already looking at a Roman project so who knows

They didn't know what a lion looked like when they designed those crests. Hilarious!
Everyone knows that lions walk on their hind legs, silly.
They all knew about lions man. The reason according to MMA in nyc , art depicts strength in many forms aka a lion and standing up tall and proud like a bear in some schools on their mascots etc a sign of strength when an animal stands tall or person. What makes it art the message of how it was drawn.

What if your clan was once an Irish clan that later became a Scottish clan, as I come from the clan of Fergus that now has the common last name of Ferguson.
Please tell me the music at the start is by a band with more of the same stuff? Folk metal, fantastic!
Edit: great vid btw, now I see why there was so much in fighting with Scottish clan history.

People of non-whiteness need to make more of an effort to learn about other cultures like the Irish and Scottish instead of stereotyping them and remaining mired in ignorance.
Is this in gaelic
Níl. Are You English? Lol
The only way I’d support a united ireland is if Scotland would join it and form a Gaelic nation. Fixing the wrongs of the past and re uniting age old bonds
that would be very beneficial for both countries, but it wont happen for many reasons
As a Somali Cushite with even more clans based on strict paternal lineage than Scots and Irish people, I'm disappointed that the gaelic and Welsh people were so weak as to be conquered repetitively and constantly by the English immigrants
@@hassanabdikarimmohamed2505 you clearly dont know any of the history then
@@tractorbois5743 I do, and sadly, its appealing, how the angles and saxons as immigrants uprooted the native gaelic people, pushing you out of modern England and even invading and conquering you, Ireland was directly under the English for nearly 1000 years or even longer, Scotland briefly gained their independence but only after centuries of English rule
To this day why is Irish territory part of thr UK? Didn't Ireland itself only get independence recently, pathetic
Also, wasnt the Irish potato famine deliberately caused due to the English hoarding all the produce ? How many died due to this ? What about the Highland persecution of Scottish clans to force them to forget their language and culture ? Its sad how most Scottish, and all Irish, today, speak English as their only language
Wow, imagine after more than 1000 years of oppression, adopting the language of your oppressors, you guys are like the congoid people of Europe
You seem to be missing alot of information between the Anglo-Norman inavsion and the 850 years after it, Many of the topics you are mentioning here will be discussed at great length, i welcome debates but please respect peoples cultures and history as im sure you would like the same respect shown.

When did Irish clans as a political entity cease? The Scots clans ceased after Culloden, but did the Irish last longer?
No it was much earlier,
in short Kinsale is our Culloden, The Flight of the earls is our Bonnie Prince Charlies heading off in the hope of coming back with more men and money and our Highland Clearance was the plantations.
I will do a video soon about the called 'The Death of the Clan system'
The irish clans are the same as the Scottish clans The words and meaning and systems they are the same. DNA shows thry are the same people. Clan means family in irish gealic. The irish clans where called the Scotti they invaded Western Scotland they came from eastern Ulster in ireland (Hybirina) the kingdom of Dalriada its moved its court somtime in the 4th 5th century from Antrim in ireland to Dunard Argyle in Scotland . Fergus Mor was the first Gealic Irish king of western Scotland Dalriada. Alba dident exist yet . Century's before Kenneath McApline . The irish Ogham language and costoms of kingship are proven to be irish costoms in Scotland. The irish where raiders and took lands and intermarried local chiftens family's clans from Brecon Beacons Wales and England to Dalriada in Scotland
