      Chinese characters play around with the idea similar to prefix and suffix in English. For example, the character "你" means you. The left side of the character is a "prefix" version of the character “人” which tells you that the character is about humans. With this knowledge, you can kind of tell that the characters "他“ “健” “儡“ all have something to do with human without knowing the exact meaning of these characters.
      Btw, the character "他" is the third person pronoun for a human. This is why a Chinese language speaker will find the debate of gender pronouns to be ridiculous because Chinese pronouns don't usually specify genders. We technically have ”她” as a female pronoun but it is not wrong to call a female “他“, and they also have the same pronunciation.

    Destiny low-key really annoys me when he tries to talk about formalized logic, because it's really clear he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's really smart, but he never took the time to really understand any of it, and then talks with a vague sense of confidence about it.
    Yes, there is such a thing as classical logic. And no, as an easy example, the law of excluded middle (∀p, p∧¬p is true) is not assumed in all logical systems. Constructionist math, or intuitionistic math rejects the truth of LEM. So proof by contradiction is not a valid proof technique in this model.
    Both classical and constructive logic, tends to be written in set theoretic language. At least in mathematics, we ground it in set theory. There's also other systems, like category theory, that is grounded in different structures. Where set theory essentially focuses on objects, category theory essentially focuses on the relationship between objects.

      @RGS578 24 дні тому

      @@ZphyraRyuu Destiny said something along the lines of, "I'm pretty sure all formal logical systems use LEM (The law of excluded middle)."
      LEM means in words: All statements must be either true or false.
      The consequence of this: If you want to prove something is true. It is sufficient to prove that the negation is false.
      A non-math example would be: "I want to prove that someone is morally good. Maybe it is difficult to define what it means to be good, but easy to define what it means to be bad. So I develop a proof arguing that this person is not morally bad. Since they are not bad, they must be good QED (end of proof)."
      With that example in mind, we might question the truth of LEM. Not bad = Good, seems to sit on shaky foundations. Mathematicians have looked into assuming LEM as an axiom, and not assuming it. The former is classical logic, and the latter is constructive logic. It's not clear which one should be followed, as both end up with some hyper-unintuitive results.

    For anyone wondering, the argument is illogical because it is invalid. The conclusion doesn’t follow from the premise:
    •‘Vulcan’ is a subset of ‘rational’
    •’Captain Kirk’ is a point found somewhere within ‘rational’ but not necessarily within the subset ‘vulcan’
    •therefore, even if all Vulcans are rational, and Captain Kirk too is rational, the conclusion that Captain Kirk is a Vulcan is not necessarily true or false based on the premises.

    The way this is structured is an argument. Each statement above the line is a premise, the statement below the line is the conclusion. For the argument to be valid, when all the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. If the premises are false, it doesn’t matter what the conclusion is, it can still be valid if when the premises are true the conclusion is true, but if there is any specific example for which all the premises are true but the conclusion is false, the argument is said to be invalid.

    Prop logic can be entirely constructed out of set theory/computational logic which makes it way easier because you are thinking of things like objects that you can ascribe attributes to. That star trek thing is so easy this way, the set of all Vulcans are rational, so think of a circle with all Vulcans in it, then think of a circle of the set of all rational things, the set of vulcans is entirely within this set(subset) so the first circle is inside the second. Then captain Kirk is rational, and you can think is there a place to put Kirk in the second(rational) circle that places him outside the Vulcan circle? The answer is possibly but not necessarily(and therefore the absolute answer isn't logically supported) we don't have info that anything else can be rational, so they might be equivalent sets(in which case Kirk being rational does mean he's a Vulcan) but we just dont know that(and realistically if we know what rational or captain Kirk mean as content then we know that these must not be equivalent sets.

      All Vulcans (A) are rational (B)

      It doesn’t follow that Captain Kirk is a Vulcan just because he is rational - could be a rational Martian or something else
      If the first premise said only Vulcans are rational instead of just saying all are, then what you said would logically follow

    Formal logic is the expression Tiny is looking for. Classical logic is only really used when compared to nonstandard foundations of mathematics, think propositions with more than two possible truth values, no LEM and things like that. At least as far as math is concerned, philosophers might use it to refer to logic in classical period, so pretty much sillogisms

    • @joelsdogbehavior
      @joelsdogbehavior 28 днів тому

      Classical logic or the frege-russel model is what he's talking about. You're right that it's a way to break down arguments into algebraic order. Formal logic is the rules, classic logic is the algebriac way of representing arguments within those rules.
      The connection to classic philosophy is that classical logic was built to very easily recognize formal fallacies laid out by classic philosophers, especially Aristotle.
      They method is taught in most college logic courses to some extent. And some form of it is often used in critics of philosophical work as it can be a very effective way to summarize arguments while breaking them down to show flaws.

    • @andresfontalvo17
      @andresfontalvo17 27 днів тому

      @@joelsdogbehavior Okay but Destiny was talking about rules not the algebra. He mentioned non-contradiction and LEM, and was hinting at rules of inference.
      Also, I'm not sure of the use of distinguishing between the formal rules from the algebra. In math speak you'll often use the latter to refer to all the formalism in whichever theory. Is this distinction useful in philosophy?

    • @joelsdogbehavior
      @joelsdogbehavior 27 днів тому

      @andresfontalvo17
      We distinguish between formal and classical logic because formal logic excludes informal fallacies, while classical logic does not. An "ad hominem" attack, for instance, can be represented classically as valid modus ponens and modul tonnens, but still be a violation of formal logic.
      There aren't really great comparisons to math because numbers themeselves are an abstraction. But it would be like if you had an equation that was sound algebraically but failed as soon as we ran any numbers through (which doesn't happen).
      To complicate it more, informal logic is the application of formal logic. So we us classical logic to identify formal logic and then explain it all with informal logic.
      But honestly, contextually, you can just say logic most of the time, and everyone will know what you mean. Philosophy and Math are full of jargonized goop 😅

    It's possible he fires, but they didnt find any of the associated paraphernalia, cotton, cigarette butts, spoons, syringes, tourniquet and it's tough to flush syringes. And judging by his collection he would have had novelty syringe, tourniquet, spoons and shit. And if you fire, youre not going anywhere without your works. Shooting coke is uncommon nowadays,people obviously do it, but it was much more common before the bug came round from what the old timers would say. Sometimes out of desperation people do it, can't get your heroin, only coke, "gimme a shot". I always found coke to be a miserable high, at least heroin makes you feel good when you do it. But im told actual heroin is tough to find nowadays. Such a depressing scene

    With friends we call the "capital L" logic as "pedantically logic" or sometimes just pedantic. Today I had a talk with friend about monotonic clocks, and we went pendantic enough to come to conclusion that techically we cannot have "true" monotonic clock, since even best oscilator will have very very very small fluctuations. That was fun talk, I like the pedantic logic stuff.

    • @_uncredited
      @_uncredited 28 днів тому +3

      It's not a foundation of the method itself. Reproducable _results_ would confirm a hypothesis or act as a proof. The method itself (how you inquire) must be the repeatable/reproducable part. If you get varied results, that's fine. Good even. It means you have more science to do. Eg. The Three Body Problem will never give you consistent results, but testing it is perfectly valid.

    • @ogolthorp
      @ogolthorp 27 днів тому

      Attempting to reproduce results is a foundation.

    • @mr-h6x
      @mr-h6x 27 днів тому

      not exactly. it's a process. the process of posing a hypothesis and testing it are also part of the process. to say it's not science is weird to me. science relies on all of those steps. the hypothesis and testing steps are fundamental to science. to say they aren't science until someone else has reproduced the results is weird to me. eventually someone will come along and find your work and try to reproduce it. just because they haven't yet, doesn't mean you haven't made a contribution to the ongoing process.
      it's a weird thing to quibble over and gatekeep

    Spock logic:
    1. A --> B
    2. S=B
    C. S=A v S=-A
    Science demands you follow the scientific method, not that it's concluded. In fact, it doesn't conclude, it's an active methodology that demands you incorporate conclusions into the next cycle of questioning. We assign confidence intervals, and those would increase with reproduced results - a meta study is generally more trusted- but it's all active science.
    This active status does demand the scientific method includes integration. We generally think of the is academic publication and corporate application, but really it just demands you incorporate conclusions into future hypothesis.

    Boar hunting you can basically go buck wild and hunt them how ever you wont because of how fast they reproduce and dangerous they are. Not enough people hunt them or some states dont allow it at all or dont have the same kill as many as you can mind set. Unfortunately that leads to wild life management having to go up in helicopters or hiring hunters to go up in helis and light up as many as they can and leave them where they lie. Boars are a huge problem and there are alot of states that have really wasteful ways of dealing with them and others that dont hunt them enough.

    Chinese writing is easier than Japanese. Chinese characters were built around Chinese. Japanese adopted the Chinese characters (called Kanji) much later on, so theyre often inconsistent. On top of the over 2200 characters MINIMUM you need for reading a newpaper in Japanese, you have to learn 2 more alphabets (hiragana and katakana). Plus, Chinese characters typically only have 1 reading with 4 inflections changing the meaning. Japanese's Kanji can have several ways to read them, all dependent on the word's origin and meaning.
