I think its useful information. If you failed at 37 relationships by the time you are 22, , chances are its not gonna last with me either lol. And that doesnt even take into the account the baggage that comes with having that many people you once loved and loved you all floating around. I dont need some dude banging on my door and slashing my tires because hes still jealous.

This movie truly was a labor of love for Kevin Smith & his friends. Total budget wound up being $27,575. Smith raised the money by, among other things, selling his comic book collection and using the insurance settlement he got when his car was caught in a flood. The decision to shoot in black & white was also related to the budget: black & white film was cheaper to buy and (more importantly) to develop (EDIT: also easier to light during shooting). Money was also the reason for the "bunch of savages in this town" jamming gum in the locks: Smith secured permission to film at the convenience store he was working at but only at night when the store was closed, so they wrote a reason for the shutters being closed to explain the lack of natural light inside.
I *really* hope you do dive deeper down the View Askewniverse rabbit hole, and soon. It isn't *required* that you watch them all in release order, but I'd recommend it. All of the films are intertwined in that they reference characters and events from previous movies, so you miss out a bit if you skip around. 💰💰💰

The rest of the View Askewniverse movies are varying in levels of quality (some excellent, some just ok), but they’re part of a setup for a payoff in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back which is absolutely worth the journey of the movies that lead up to it.
J&SBSB is full of love and also brutal honesty about the movie industry and the fans and actors that surround it, so it’s perfect for a reaction channel as you’ll get many of the references and even feel both attacked and vindicated along the way.
I heartily recommend the series since you enjoyed Clerks so much.

@@kaiielle i'm late maybe you've done them all by now, but definitely do them in order, i wouldn't recommend skipping any of them they are all very different movies, they all tell a continuing story with subtle callback refences you wont get if you missed the movie/character being reference, not to mention the nearly 30 year arc of character development, and you get to find out the secret of the view askew universe (which character was originally based on kevin smith's real life, especially before the movie).
this is good advice for everyone, my first view askew movie was jay and silent bob strike back, when i saw it i didn't even know it was part of a larger universe of movies of which it was just the most recent one at the time, and was probably my most watched movie throughout high school, but going back and seeing the whole story made jay and silent bo strike back that much better then next time i watched it knowing all the references that come from the previous movies.

So I looked through a couple of the comments and didn’t see this said but it prob was by someone…. So Clerks had an alternate ending where after Randall leaves Dante is closing up but doesn’t lock the front door is reading a magazine someone comes in the store Dante then says “We’re closed” Dante looks up and is promptly shot by a robber he steals money from the register takes a pack of cigs and the closing shot of the movie is Dante dead on the floor behind the counter.

Was shotnon B&W tomsave money and the flurencent lights. A happy accident because it works so much better as a B&W. Filmed this at the convenience store he used to work at. Love heavy dialogue movies that don't require a ton of sets to tell a good story. There is a movie called Friday that is sort of the same feel as this. People observing and a story being told. Definitely worth a look later on down the road. You said you like dialogue stories, then you have to watch 12 Angry Men 1957. 98% of the entire movie takes place in one room and there are only 5 or so different sets. Best-written script in cinema in my opinion.

You pretty much nailed it with the film school comment. It was really. Half the cast were just friends not actors, Kevin sold a lot of his comic collection to fund it and the reason a premise for the shutters being down had to be created was because Smith worked at the store and the owner gave him permission to film but only overnight = no daylight.

Kevin Smith is a wonderful human being, and I feel closer to him than any other celebrity. Working as mailman, I spent thousands of hours listening to him and his producing partner; the inestimable Scott Mosier (Snowball and angry roof hockey guy). The two men pioneered the podcasting movement on their foundational Smodcast, and I do recommend checking those out if you are so inclined (Emo-Kev is a highlight of the series, and is available on YT; it is both hilarious and touching). While Kevin has always been a force of positivity , he has been going through an extremely tough time, recently revealing deeply personal traumatic events from his past. He discusses his time in a mental health facility with PEOPLE magazine on YT, and I gained a lot of insight into my own struggles with depression. Kevin's honesty has encouraged me to make dramatic steps to face my suffering with courage and optimism. I think Kevin Smith could use all of our support in this moment, and I thank you for taking this journey into the Viewaskewniverse!!!! Snootchins'!!!!!

Funny, you actually briefly perpetuated your own belief to me when you knew the words to that song. I thought, "huh, I never knew he was singing a real song rather than making one up."
Years after the movie was made, after the supposed end of the movie View Askewniverse (the fifth movie was initially meant as a finale), ABC commissioned an animated series based on "Clerks." For reasons I forget, Disney ended up not wanting it, dumping two episodes on the air in a terrible timeslot, and then unceremoniously canceling the show. Frankly, while I like the original run of VA movies to varying degrees (I haven't seen a new Kevin Smith movie since 2009), I still think the "Clerks" animated series, which was eventually released on DVD, was one of the best things Smith ever did. Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, and many others came back to voice their original characters.
This long bit of trivia is setup to explain that you can look up and watch the scene inside the funeral parlor, animated in the style of the "Clerks" cartoon, done for the 10th anniversary DVD release. It was written in the script and meant to be shot, but they had to cut it for budgetary reasons.
You can also probably find a disastrous pilot for a live-action TV show made in 1995 or so, in which Jim Breuer plays Jay. Smith was not involved, and it's mostly talked about as a train-wreck curiosity. In any case, I'm sure this all makes perfect sense: obviously, the first thing anyone would think watching this non-stop string of profanity and sex/drug/weed talk is, "we should try and make this into network TV, twice!"
One thing I didn't mention in the previous comment I left on Patreon is that the movie originally had an ending where a robber comes into the store right after Randal leaves and shoots Dante, killing him. By Smith's own admission, he was reaching for something profound and came up quite short, and everyone who worked on the movie and saw it agreed that it should be removed.
As far as the VAiverse goes, I would say, for sure watch the original five movies (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back), plus Clerks II. The more recent stuff seems to be very hit-or-miss with people, and you can make up your own mind about those. 🚬

$30k budget financed by credit cards and a comic book collection, and a cult classic was born. Not a college film, but not far off - it was Kevin Smith's first feature after dropping out of Vancouver Film School.
He's American, but he's a bit of a Canadaphile and has a soft spot for all things Canadian... Some of his latest movies are part of the 'True North Trilogy' - three horror comedy films set in Canada...
If you like dialogue heavy movies, you'll like most of his work. He's not exactly known for dynamic directing (not being mean about that, he often jokes about how it took him, like, 4 films to shoot coverage), his strengths tend to be on the writing side.
Oh, and Silent Bob is played by none other than Kevin Smith himself.
Also, they're best watched in order, not for plot reasons per se (though characters and situations will appear and/or be referenced throughout), but because there's a noticeable change/improvement in technique as they go forward.

Oh come on. I was expecting more facts than that. I didn't want to bombard her with facts because I knew other people would.
-Kevin Smith was working at Quick Stop during the day and shooting the movie at night.
-The shutters had to be closed because they were shooting at night. So he wrote in the gum in the locks
-The mellow guy that gets in the ambulance is Scott Mosier, Kevin Smith's producing partner
-The egg guy also appears as the offended guy and one of the cigarette rioters, he's one of Kevin Smith's best friends.
-Kevin wrote the part of Randall for him, that's why he has the best lines, but Kevin decided not to try to memorize all of that dialogue.

Going in order is probably the best way to watch through the View Askewniverse, due mostly to references and cameos in the other movies. I'd also highly recommend to make sure to watch the Theatrical version of Mallrats (the next movie from Kevin Smith). There's an extended cut out there, but the pacing in the theatrical is far superior and makes for a better first viewing experience overall.

Fun Fact: Kevin Smith decided to first study about filmmaking at the Vancouver Film School. He was set to do the full course sequence, but then after meeting Scott Mosier (his longtime producer and the one who notably played "Snowball" in this movie) and Dave Klein (the Director of Cinematography for his first few movies; he's currently a major DoP for a few Disney+ shows, most notably "The Mandalorian"; in this film, he's the customer the Chewlies Gum rep bothered about buying cigarettes), Kevin decided to take the financial aid he got for the VFS and use it instead to help make this movie (btw, he dropped out of the VFS after only one semester).

Smith originally wrote the role of Randal for himself (which is why he got all the best lines) but then had no confidence in his own acting ability, so took the Silent Bob role instead.

Kevin Smith believes that the writer crafts their ideal world and, as he put it, “In my ideal world everyone has long conversations about interesting shit or just picks apart pop culture to death… and everyone talks in monologues.” I love Kev, he seems like an all right guy, and I find much of his work entertaining. If you liked this, I recommend seeing at least up to Dogma in the Askewniverse and seeing if you feel like going further.

This kind of movie reminds me so much of the 'underground comics' of my youth. The stories were mostly shorter but the creativity level was up there. The crude language, the slacker mentality, the sex talk and the working mans philosophizing were all there. I think they're still around, In reprints and new material.

Silent Bob is Kevin Smith the creator, writer and director of the View-Askewniverse.
I know it's a stretch to assume you would want to read all this but if you continue watching kevin smith films, i recommend Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back, Clerks 2 and then Clerks 3 in that order and just skip everything else. These are his stronger movies that have connections to each other.
As a fan of Kevin Smith I would say with great honesty that Kevin Smith actually makes a lot of hits and misses. I feel they try making Clerks 2 more sexual and shocking, them thinking that's what fans want. However despite being overtly goofy, some of the films (like Clerks 2) really has strong messages and/or metaphors behind the cartoon-ish comedy.
Like this movie for example, every customer and every problem is just a metaphor for the main story problem, like the point of the pringles can stuck on some guys hand because hes too stupid to let go or find an easier way is just the same point of Dante not letting go of Katelyn " those hard to reach chips". or him going into work being upset about the stupidity of the customers even though he could quit and go to school is the same as him staying with veronica and foolishly expecting thing be better or getting into a relationship in general and expecting there to be no past sexual baggage but like a moron, shame your partner.

Follow me on this: they put the corps in the ambulance with a hard-on. Then Snowball gets-in. When they close the doors we see the dead guy has gone flacid. Question: did Snowball sucked the cadaver out of rigor mortis? I've been pondering that question for thirty years now...
React suggestions: Four rooms (1994), The acid house (1998), Human traffic (1999.)
PS - In real life Randall married Caitlin...for a while.

Great movie. I lived about 25 minutes away from Leonardo, NJ where most of this movie was filmed and once made a pilgrimage to the Quick Stop Grocery Store. Unfortunately, the disposable camera I bought there to memorialize the trip stayed in the car glove compartment until it melted, so I never got the film developed. The layout of the store was not as I envisioned it, but after watching the movie again I could see how accurate it was.

Kevin Smith was a HUGE fan of Richard Linklater's first film Slacker, said seeing it gave him the confidence to make Clerks. The 90s indie scene really focused on long takes with unbroken dialogue and gave us some of the most quotable films ever.

    I’m 💯 here for this.
Just listening to your thoughts, your laugh and you generally enjoying yourself watching a classic comedy like this is appealing in itself.
I look forward to seeing you discover this universe.
    A couple of little facts:
The blonde guy with the beard “Snowball” was Scott Mosier.
(A Canadian/American, btw) Kevin Smith’s long time right hand man, producer and director. The guy looking through the eggs, and also the “highly offended” conservative guy was Walt Flanagan, known as the manager and owner of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, home of the New Jersey reality show, Comic Book Men. In the early days, a lot of the people you’ll see in Kevin’s films are good friends who have stuck with him for years. Not unlike Adam Sandler, and Judd Apatow, and the way they cast for their films. You’ll see more of them as you continue through these films. You’ll also see some very familiar faces that pretty much started their careers because of Kevin Smith.

When video stores were a thing, I recall working for a Major Video that was bought out by Blockbuster. Major Video was one of the few major chains to have an adult section, with really loud swinging doors, to call attention to everyone entering to and fro. Not sure if that was intentional or not, but it was hilarious:)
